You'd never know Chicago doesn't have mountain railroading from this photo. Several people have asked when the photo book I'm putting together will be out. The answer is, soon, but I don't know exactly when yet. Every time I've gotten close to finishing this project, I seem to get further away from the end. The book, which is still untitled, will be a monograph on Chicago's railroads and the built environment they run through. While there are many published collections of photos of railroading in Chicago, as well as many monographs focusing on individual railroads, there has not, to my knowledge been a single fine arts monograph to address the entirety of Chicago's rail system, and its interactions with and effect upon the rest of the cityscape. My hope is to correct that oversight. After making my photo selections, I realized I had left large geographical gaps in the selection. The mainlines of the south east side, though of vital historical and aesthetic significance were overlooked. Also overlooked was the northwest section of the IHB, another important area for my purposes. My recent photography activity has had an eye towards filling these gaps, and I think I'm coming very close to finalizing the selections and moving on to the epic task of processing each photograph for print. This could take some time, as the book has expanded past my original goal of 80 pages to over 100. However, I think the end results will be well worth the wait. I'll keep you all posted as to the book's progress.

UPY GP15-1 742 sits at EMD LaGrange, but that is not the point of the picture. The blue engine behind the 742 is EMD 9501, which was one of four SD60MACs ever built! McCook, IL The SD60MAC was the predecessor to the SD70MAC, and were the first AC Traction widenose units ever built by EMD. These SD60MACs were never actually bought by any railroads, but they led to the SD70MACs and SD70ACes we shoot regularly today. The 9501 has been repainted solid blue, had part of the hood removed and had a SD70ACe radiator put on it.

fragment 2009. Almost Empty, 2 Taken in the Lyons/McCook area. A test of a Diana camera I picked up on ebay. Probably would have been more if I would have realized that the 'p' setting meant 'pinhole'. I mean it was emphasized in the manual. Anywho, four shots from the car window again. They're not composed all too well, but at least the huge white void of the sky is present in all of them. Almost looks purposeful. Unfortunately I'm not that good. 6/07/97: Once known as Pielet Brothers (scrappers of the stars) now Midwest Metals in it's final days before being turned into a container terminal. A view of the west end of the property and piles of oxidized steel. Final locomotives to be scrapped include Chessie GP30 4258. The huge fenced in weedland to the right used to be full of tracks and cranes with electromagnets and many, many old classic diesels traded in to EMD which is located west across the IHB tracks.

Rustbucket Union Pacific 1412, built as Southern Pacific GP40-2 7659 in March of 1980, sits at her birthplace at EMD's La Grange facility, wearing most of the paint she had when she left here as a new locomotive 30 years ago. For whatever reason, she has come home. Maybe the boys in the shop can find a few cans of SP red and grey left over and run this thing through the paint booth-if it still exists.

The plant switcher and EMD's SD60ACe testbed are outside the LaGrange plant enjoying the beautiful weather this afternoon. EMDX 9501 is the former BN 9501, one of four SD60MAC prototype locomotives that led to the SD70MAC. It was converted at CEECo a year and a half ago into an engine testbed. IHB GP40-2 4012 leads a weird manifest east through the poorly configured intersection of 47th Street and Eberly/East Avenue. This train consisted of several flatcars filled with materials for power lines, followed by two high/wide transformer loads, then a whole bunch of tractors on flat cars. LaGrange, IL

Shot along the road home. This is right after we get off the main freeway and actually start toward home. The feeling of finally home and the great sunset made for a must-take shot. Blogged at: http://angwe.livejournal.com/87254.html

Chessie System's cat logo was a resurrection of an advertising icon the C&O Railway had used years earlier to advertise their passenger service. They had used the slogan Sleep Like a Kitten and adorned calendars and advertising with Chessie the cat.

Little did I know at the time that the C&NW and Southern Railway units would represent my first two full time employers after I graduated from college. #6100 was the EMD FT demonstrator that Southern Railway ultimately bought.
