Mosque on the Kali Jangkok, Lombok, Indonesia

This is the Jangkok River, which runs right through the capital Mataram of the island of Lombok, next to Bali on the East, Indonesia. The photo was taken from the north bank of the river facing south, just over a hundred metres from the Jalan Energi bridge to the west and a couple of hundred metres from the river's mouth; hence the fishing boats resting in the shadow of the relatively new mosque. Until 1894 Lombok was more or less free from European colonialism. That's not to say there was no regional empire building. The indigenous Sasak population of Lombok had lost its sovereignty to the kingdom of Karangasem on Bali. They complained to the Dutch colonial government in Batavia (today Jakarta), which now had a great pretext to extend its own sphere of influence. An expeditionary force (the so-called KNIL) was sent to Lombok to subjugate the Balinese ensconced there in places like Cakranegara (a beautiful place, even now). The Balinese radja seemed to yield but in an about-face attacked the Dutch army (August 1894), routing it completely and even killing the commander, one General-Major P.P.H. van Ham (1839-1894; he was buried in a small, still very nicely kept plot next to a pretty Hindu temple). This so-called 'Treason of Lombok' fired up the Dutch (with enormous public pressure from as far away as the newspaper reading intelligentsia of the European Netherlands) to send an army bent on destroying the Balinese on Lombok. Horrible bloodshed ensued during which the Balinese committed mass ritual suicide clad entirely in white ('Puputan'). The Dutch colonial army made off with the loot, termed in Dutch De Schat van Lombok (The Treasure of Lombok). It is a most valuable collection of jewels, gold and precious objects, and was recently displayed in a wonderful joint exposition in the Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterrdam, and the National Museum, Jakarta. The Mataram-Karangasem kingdom destroyed, both the Balinese on Lombok and the Sasaks fell under the rigorous Dutch new deal. On their way North to subdue the rest of the island, the Dutch soldiers had to wade across this river and there are photos of this crossing in Dutch archives. Today the banks of the Jangkok have small fishing harbors, and farmers also tend vegetable gardens with so-called Chinese lettuce. The people are congenial and friendly, and they have time for a chat punctuated by the pleasant intonations of the muezzim.
