Marr Residence
Made by daryl_mitchell
This home was built for Alexander Marr in 1884. It was one of several houses requisitioned as part of a field hospital in May 1885 to treat the wounded from the Battles of Fish Creek and Batoche during the North-West Rebellion. Marr was a stonemason who built Saskatoon's first permanent school, the Little Stone School, at Broadway Avenue and 11th Street, now relocated to the University of Saskatchewan grounds. An addition greatly increased the original size of the house, which has a wood frame, a mansard roof and dormer windows. The property is owned by the city and is a municipal heritage property. It is the oldest building in Saskatoon on its original site.

Sloping Roof

The house has a mansard roof, which allows usable living space to be placed in the attic. In this house, two rooms were open; a bedroom and a replica of a military field hospital. The Marr Residence was in fact one of three houses in Saskatoon requisitioned to be used as such during the 1885 Northwest Rebellion.

Front Entrance

As is typical of older two story houses, the staircase to the second floor is right off the front entrance. The Marr Residence was built in 1884 with lumber rafted down the South Saskatchewan River.

Kitchen

The tiny kitchen of the Marr Residence is located in the middle of the house. An even tinier bathroom is through the door on the left. The house didn't have electricity until the 1920s.

Bedroom

This bedroom was decorated with period furniture. I think this was a single bed, because it would be a tight squeeze for two!
