Approaching Norton's Falls
Made by fallsguyd
Here you can see The Cave (Don't Call Me A Culvert or Drainage Ditch!!) at the top and a bit of tash from the over side of the Cul...,er Cave. I tell people it's a Tundra Swan swimming upstream. What follows is mainly for those real waterfall aficionados who might ever consider seeking out this falls, based on my 7 or 8 visits over a number of years -- You can't go by how much water there is in nearby streams and rivers when considering whether to visit this falls with thoughts of taking pictures. Two or three of the times I was here there was essentially no water at all. Only once (see below) was it bordering on the spectacular. That was 20 minutes after a long heavy rain had fallen. Even then, in the 20 minutes I was there, there was a noticeably diminished flow! You could see it stop being spectacular! But, if you ever get the opportunity after a heavy rainfull, get your butt up there, as this becomes an outstanding waterfall then. It does have it's moments though with at least this much water. Feeding the fowl"
Made by canaltowntraveler
I followed behind this lady as we drove around on a park road. I knew nothing about her, it was just that she was the lead car and I had several more cars behind me. The only way to pass was if a car pulled over to the edge of the road or off into a parking lot. The one place she choose to pull over was also the place everyone else wanted to stop too. It was a park pond with just one area of open water and it was right next to the road and loaded with ducks, geese and swans. A strange thing happened when she pulled over. Many of the ducks and geese etc. left the water and walked right up to her car. I have a feeling she has been here before. When she got out of here car I understood what the draw was for all of her feathered friends. She began to pour out these buckets of corn for the birds. As she did, more and more birds gathered around her. Some walked over , others flew in. You should have heard the racket. Seneca Park, Rochester, NY

I Made It!
Made by fallsguyd
I had often thought that the only place I hadn't shot Rochester's Lower Falls from was the west side of the gorge, down by the river. I didn't think I could ever make it down there! I'd shot it from the other side by the river a couple of years. Today, a beautiful day, with the river running strong, I took the plunge! This is not something I will be doing again I tell you! But I made it back all right (took me 45 minutes to get up to the Maplewood Rose Garden parking lot) but I'm glad I did it. It's another fallsworld from down there. Strange! I took some shoots that don't show andy civilization, that is the power station on the left. But I am finding that for some reason I don't like them as well! There was so much spray you couldn't see where the falls ended on one side.

Do you fall in love often? Yes often. With a view, with a book, with a dog, a cat, with numbers, with friends, with complete strangers, with nothing at all. I love widely, indiscreetly. I forget it is myself I am trying to love back to a better place. Some people dream in color, I feel in colour, strong tones that I hue down for the comfort of the pastelly inclined. Beige and magnolia and a hint of pink are what the well-decorated heart is wearing; who wants my blood red and vein-blue? Don’t lie. Don’t lie. You know you like to view but not to buy. I have found that I am not a space where people want to live. At least not without decorating first. And that is the stubbornness in me: I do not want be someone’s neat little home. {Jeanette Winterson}

The Rise And Fall Of Norton's Falls
Made by fallsguyd
This is the in-city waterfall that only makes sense after a heavy rain. We had a very heavy deluge this morning. I was up and at 'em at Norton's Falls within 35 minutes of the rain's stopping. It looked pretty hot when I got there. I knew the water level could go down right before your eyes, but I never thought to take pictures just before I left to document the fact. You can compare the level of the water when I got there and when I left 40 minutes later. In the 2 pictures below look for the second square rock from the left. When I got there it was covered by water as was the thin strip of rock below it. Note the difference in that area in the 2nd picture below. By now, 3 hours later, I'm sure the falls are just a dribble again.

Lower Falls Of The Genesee In Winter
Made by fallsguyd
I'm mainly posting this now with a picture that many of you liked...and thank you, I do appreciate the remarks. But I was thinking that some might have thought that all the impressive ice on the right hand side was a frozen waterfall. Not so, just frozen snow melt. here you can see pretty much the real waterfall with the other just barely seen on the right. (Note on 12-8-08 -- Neither of my 2 lenses for the Sony A-200, which I now use most of the time, will fit through the squares on the fence overlooking this falls, so my days of featuring this view are over unless I want to take the Sony H2 out there.)

Bridge floating in green
Made by rengel134
The Veteran's Memorial Bridge in Rochester, New York, carries NY Route 104 (less well known as the Keeler Street Expressway) across the Genesee River. The bridge is an architecturally significant concrete arch faced with white granite. Conceived in 1928 and finished in 1931, the span is the longest bridge in Rochester at 981 feet. It is 190 feet in height and 106 feet wide. The bridge was originally connected to a traffic circle but was changed to an interchange in the 1960's As seen in: rocwiki.org/Veterans_Memorial_Bridge

Bite the Dust
Made by M J M
(bigger) Building 9, Kodak Park, Rochester NY... Imploded 8:03am Saturday, June 30, 2007. Building 9 was the former home of photo paper cutting and packaging. It is one of many Kodak buildings being demolished this year, but one of only two getting the dynamite treatment! This was worth getting up at 6am on a Saturday for! I shot many more frames than this at 5fps, but these three tell the story pretty well. The dust cloud reached me in about 10 seconds and was really thick and nasty. Glad I brought a dust mask!

White Wolf
Made by penguinchris
True story - when I was five years old I was licked in the face by a wolf (not this one) in the Adirondacks because earlier in the day my nose had been bleeding. Update 10/08: If you do a google or yahoo image search for white wolf face, this photo is in the first page of results. For plain old white wolf I stopped looking after 30 pages of google results. I find that interesting because while indeed this is a photo of a white wolf face, the face that I had mentioned was mine, not the wolf's :) Also in 10/08, this is my first photo to have surpassed 2,000 views.

Looking More Closely
Made by fallsguyd
There are two rather interesting ice formations at Norton's falls. One are the 2 ice blocks on the left that have been formed perpendicularly to each other (see note). The other is the circular formation that can been see toward the middle on Large. The shot is as tight as it is because of fallen trees and ugly branches over to the right. Also seen, if you have the inclination -- a baby Polar Bear climbing the falls on the left and just above that an elderly lady with a large bonnet playing Winter Wonderland on a toy piano. Images From The Edge
Made by fallsguyd
In spite of my never-ending mission to try for some different shots of the much-photogaphed Lower Falls here in Rochester, I first passed up this location which gives one unauthorized access to a full front view of falls I noticed that since the one time I've gone down there others have make a path over the fence and down close. Pictures are difficult from there, mostly because of the constant mist and trying to keep things dry, but coming back I decided to take the plunge and did come up with some fairly decent shots, as seen below.

2010 Waterfall Highlight
Made by fallsguyd
Here's a previously unseen picture of one of my waterfall highlights of 2010. One of those expeditions that I probably shouldn't have attempted, but later was glad I make the trip.....ONCE! I would never do this again! It took me about 20 minutes to get down from the top of the gorge on the west side which can be seen in the picture below and at least 45 minutes to get back up. If you go to the 3rd panel of the bridge from the left, that's where I started, slowly coming down at about a 45 degree angle to the river's edge.

What's A Fallsguy To Do?
Made by fallsguyd
It's rainly, it's windy, it's 39 degrees. What's a Fallsguy to do? I don't know what I expected here at our convenient northern city falls! Not much is the answer. The once good shooting area down a ways was even more grown up than before. Spray and rain was everywhere. Thus this very common view was all I could come up with. The Genesee River was in high gear, that's for sure. See below for the only semi-exciting thing -- pretty wild action up in the right hand corner of the falls with a large stuck piece of wood.

Call Me When It's April!
Made by fallsguyd
I think this may be it as far as winter waterfall photography goes! Did you ever try to walk downhill into pretty deep snow, but with a half dozen sets of deep footprints that have frozen over making up the path!? It took me forever to get to to the much photographed Lower Falls of the Genesee, our 2nd major city waterfall, today. Was it worth it? I am not sure. I had actually hoped to see some ice here, but there was just a lot of water and surrounding snow. I did like the muted color of the gray-green water.

Lakeview House Main HDR
Made by WebsterRealtor
This is the first time I took a chance and used HDR methods. I used GiMP as the mode of processing. My goal was a more dramatic picture for a property that deserves more than a plain Jane front shot, but I did not want it to look unnatural. While I am generally pleased with the results I realize I have a lot to learn and welcome suggestions or constructive criticism. I know that people have viewed it and liked the use of a night shot, not realizing that the brights would wash out had I just used a point and click.

"Bingo" At Norton's Falls!
Made by fallsguyd
As many of you know who follow me, this city waterfall generally has little or none water in it. But since we've had a lot of rain since Sunday afternoon, I took my chances and went on over to Norton's Falls in the rain. It was just short of spectacular, at tie for 2nd heaviest flow I've experienced there. I went all the way down to the river's edge this time. Boy, was it ever muddy! But it was awfully nice shooting in 50 degree weather even if it was raining the whole time. That has all changed now though.

Through The Fence Lower Falls
Made by fallsguyd
My thanks to by friend Christy, who told me about shooting the Upper Falls through the fence about 3 times. I finally got it today, Christy! I had to position my zoom lens carefully between the fence squares and still got some wire in on many takes. And of course I couldn't use a tripod. But it worked! This first picture did have some ghostly out-of-focus wire in the frame but I removed it with Elements. For the second picture I was able to use enough zoom so as not to have to deal with the fence at all.

An Unexpected Delight!
Made by fallsguyd
We have had a lot of rain recently, and when I heard it was scheduled to stop early this morning I jumped in the car and got on up to the seldom-flowing Norton's Falls right here in the city. I was rewarded with a good-looking waterfall. It started raining again while I was there and this is the only one of my shots taken when I am sure it wasn't actively raining. I invented a hard-to-describe method of using my rain jacket sleeve to momentarily protect my lens. NO INVITES OR ICONS PLEASE

My Most Exciting Waterfall Experience Of All Time!
Made by fallsguyd
No exaggeration. And to think I almost didn't stop by the oft-seen and photogrphed Lower Falls of the Genesee today! Obviously lots of water from snow melt and a lot of recent rain. I stood there in absolute awe. It was extremely windy. The falling water would get pushed this way and that way in the wind, hitting the rock and producing ever changing ethereal sculptures of spray, some of them at least 40 ft. in the air. With accompanying thundering sound. NO INVITES OR ICONS PLEASE

Beginner's Climbing Tree
Made by fallsguyd
Before anybody comes up with cries of Great composition, David! (which I don't think anyone in their right mind would) I will mention that I shot this from the only position possible to avoid showing a bight yellow fire hydrant that is in back of the tree. I actually did a tiny bit of iPhoto retouching to get rid of a smidge of yellow tht showed through in the triangle on the left part of the tree. I just thought this tree had a lot of personality.
