Manoa is a valley and a residential neighborhood of Honolulu, Hawai;Si, USA approximately three miles east and inland from downtown Honolulu and less than a mile from Ala Moana and Waikiki at 2119'N 15749'W. Like many of Hawai;Si's neighborhoods, Manoa consists of an entire valley, running from Manoa Falls at the mauka end to King Street at its makai-most extreme. The valley receives almost daily rain, even during the dry season, and is thus richly vegetated &mdash though the valley walls are often dry.

Phet Mak-Mak

Phet Mak-Mak
Made by Bill Adams
This is a Thai food dish referred to as green curry. It's typically served with shrimp or chicken. This is the chicken version. I like really, really spicy Thai food. I've come to learn that requesting really, really spicy food in a North American-based Thai restaurant won't get you what you want when you possess overt caucasion facial features. Bona fide Thai restaurants won't give you Thai hot unless they know you, or you know how to properly ask. Phet mak-mak is the Thai language phrase you should use to ensure your dish is served as spicy as can possibly be. When your server asks how spicy you would like your dish prepared, simply respond with phet mak-mak, which should be pronounced pet moc-moc and delivered in very rapid fashion so they don't notice you didn't use the letter H in the word phet. If they look at you with one of those cocked-headed German Shepherd looks, you've wandered into a Thai restaurant which is not operated by Thai people, in which case you should slowly place your menu on the table and leave the premises immediately.

Katie Tree

Katie Tree
Made by kcmckell
3700KatieTree Tried to have a little fun and asked the roommates to do something typical of them for this shot. Katie's doing exhibitionist yoga, Jeff's gorging on pretzel sticks and Cadbury eggs, Philip is engrossed with his new laptop, and I'm stinky from working out and coveting my motorcycle helmet. This the one I printed, matted, and framed for Katie. See the alternates and here. Strobist: Key: Metz CT-45 into white umbrella aimed at white ceiling near the camera. Fill: SB-28 into silver umbrella on couch camera left, mostly aimed at Jeff. Rim: SB-28 zoomed out and bare behind Katie. Kicker: SB-28 bounced off computer screen in Philip's lap. All the SB's were triggered by CTR-301 radio slaves and the Metz was triggered with a Sonia optical slave. I really would have liked to have killed the light that spilled back into the dining room. Probably ought to have moved the fill light behind the sofa and made it point across the scene instead of into it.

‘Ahu Vahine nō te ‘Ōte‘a

‘Ahu Vahine nō te ‘Ōte‘a
Made by University of Hawaii Museum
‘Ōte‘a Kia Mana, 2006 For this costume here, we had the girls with the brown skirt, and we had one girl take apart all the skirts. Un-knot all of it, and put it all in different groups. So we had one in brown, one in the natural. We had people with feathers doing everything. And then we just pass it all down. So one girl is hand-sewing the lauhala, so that the next girl can come and cut it out, give it to another girl who can sew the edges down so it doesn’t unravel. Then they’ll cover it with the tapa. If there’s twenty girls they’ll do 20 of it. And then by the end we’ll at least have all the hips done and by the next weekend we’ll do all the headgears, and we’ll have all the headgears then. That, I’ve found to be better than everybody doing it on their own. ‘Cause we would have people make so much mistakes. And come back and I’ll have to explain to one person, then another person will come back and have the same mistake. And I’ll have to explain it again… —Robyn Williams, ra‘atira

Attemped Theft

Attemped Theft
Made by Matthew McVickar
Someone tried to steal my bike while I was at a meeting by putting a carjack in the U-lock. The U-lock was stronger than that, so they must have given up and left, and I discovered it like this. UHM Campus Security saw me jiggering with it and thought maybe I was stealing the thing. I was pretty angry at this point, and had no patience for SOP. While the guard left to get something to help turn the eye of and loosen the jack, I called Cody, who came up to campus with some tools. Two guards returned, collecting my MA drivers' license, asking stupid questions, and misspelling all of the names I gave them. The 1/8-inch-diamater screwdriver the guard brought wasn't leverage enough to turn the eye, so they left. Cody got resourceful and retrieved a metal dowel from the fabrication shop and with the help of a stranger we held the bike in place while I turned the eye. Eventually we loosened it back up, managed to clock the lock back into a detachable state, and emerged victorious. Plus one free car jack. Assholes.

Tell me what you think of the outtake in the link below! Am thinking of posting it on Flickr... www.lovelysomewhere.blogspot.com Anyways like I was saying in , shooting in the water/nature in general is very awkward and uncomfortable for me. I am a city girl through and through! I'll deal with a crackhead homeless person and polluted air over a cute little creek any day. Nothing about being in nature feels natural or pleasant for me. But well, I went back to the creek today to take this picture... and plunked my ass into that water! So baby steps, baby steps! I definitely want to take this opportunity to explore Hawaii and embrace it fully. Had a really good time taking pictures, though the water rinsed off my bug spray so the mosquitoes came a-nomming. Ack, my legs look like they've been through a plague haha. Hope you all are well! And I'll answer my Flickr mail soon, SO SO SORRY! I've been so caught up with school etc...

Honolulu Twisters!

Honolulu Twisters!
Made by Rex Maximilian
Eh Kimo, we not in 'Nalo anymoah... (my local take on the classic line, LOL) Taken from my living room through the window. The twin tornado/waterspouts just a few hundred yards off of the shore near downtown Honolulu/Waikiki. Although they are rare, we do get the occasional funnel cloud. But, in my 22 years here, I have never seen one (or two for that matter) as spectacular as this. Eventually, they merged into a single, thicker one... but not before dancing and spinning around each other in what appeared to be beautiful, natural choreography! Also of note, NO damage or injuries occured at all from this, so feel free to marvel at the power of mother nature. Let's see... - Earthquakes (check) - Tsunamis (check) - Volcanic Eruptions (check) - Hurricanes (check) - Floods (check) - Tornados.... (jeeeeeez, OK, CHECK!!!)

Nice Sounds

Nice Sounds
Made by Bill Adams
Melinda Gaborno listens to playback of the song she just completed a demo recording of, which is entitled; Home Melinda does not like to be photographed. Of the 880 images captured this past Sunday, I would guess ~750 of them had her as the main subject. Most of the time she wasn't aware she was being photographed as I stealthily worked around her. I have about a dozen photos of her hands covering her face, during those moments when she realized exactly what I was up to. She's given me permission to publicly post these photos, though it took quite a bit of conversational influencing beforehand. The version of Home found here is a demo version. The final version will be released on her upcoming CD.

Pahu Tupa‘i Rima

Pahu Tupa‘i Rima
Made by University of Hawaii Museum
by Mafatu Krainer We try to make our instruments a little bit more traditional, or what we might think is traditional. In Tahiti everything is changing, they change real quick. They change with the times. I see a lot of the pahu ‘i rimas* and what they do is they just use like a djembe, and they just put legs on the djembe. I think they really like that sound, the high pitched sound… it could be a lot of things. —Mafatu Krainer *Informant Terminology. The Tahitian term pahu tūpa‘i rima is often contracted to pahu tūpa‘i, pahu ‘i rima, or simply tūpa‘i.

Fa‘atete and Pahu

by KBS Instruments Craftspeople often experiment with various materials. Cheaper and easier to acquire than cow or goatskin, herculite, a reinforced nylon, can be seen on many pahu, usually as the back, non-playing membrane. This pahu has two goatskin membranes, while the fa‘atete features a herculite drumhead. The best is skin of course. That’s herculite on the back side… but we used to put it on the fa‘atetes. It works, it’s a different sound, but it works. —Kevin Kama

Java Sparrow Night Club

Java Sparrow Night Club
Made by Eric Ignacio
This bird is native to Indonesia and was introduced first in 1867 and later reintroduced in the late 1960's. It builds nests in tree cavities and under the eves of buildings. These birds travel in big groups and quarrel amongst themselves. They roost in large dense trees. Interesting Facts: These small sparrows while abundant in Hawaii are actually becoming endangered in their native range. They are also illegal to keep as pets in some parts of the mainland due to the threat of destroying specific agricultural crops.

Varsity

Varsity
Made by hawaii
The Varsity Twin Cinemas closed on Father's Day after 67 years. Its closing marks the loss of one of Honolulu's last great movie houses, a neighborhood and city landmark, that once served double duty as a theater and an overflow lecture hall for the crowded UH Manoa campus. Over the years, as my wife personally bid farewell to several old theaters, we knew the Varsity's days were numbered. Yet it was still hard to say goodbye. In these days of cookie-cutter sterile mall multiplexes, she was a gem. And will be missed.

‘Ahuroa

‘Ahuroa
Made by University of Hawaii Museum
Manutahi Tahiti, 2006 The ‘ahuroa or ‘ahupurotu takes its name from the ankle-length dress worn by the female dancers. Not originally a distinct dance category in Tahiti, Hawaiian festival organizers added this slow ‘aparima for its contrast to the faster dances. If you’re dancing an ‘ahuroa about a bird, then it would be appropriate to use a lot of feathers in your costume. —Pola Teriipaia, ra‘atira

Just a quick shot cause I miss taking photos! I wish I had more time to do so, but I've got school :( Plus Manoa is always rainy which can be inconvenient... But good news, I'm saving up for a new lens: the 70-200 f 2.8 IS II! It's quite expensive (2000ish, but I've seen it at like 1700 online) but I am majorly coveting it! Can't wait til it's mine hehe. www.lovelysomewhere.blogspot.com

Canon S95 HDR Time Lapse Test

Canon S95 HDR Time Lapse Test
Made by Joel Cosseboom (Bolo-head Man)
Just downloaded and installed the CHDK beta for Canon S95. Running the Ultra Intervalometer script and using bracketing in camera, I was able to take about 90 bracketed shots while waiting for my kids to finish up class. Batch processed through Photomatix, batch adjusted in Lightroom, imported into Quicktime and saved. 15fps is a little jumpy but with only 90 frames, anything faster would have made this test video too short.

The drive through the rain forest along the 10 mile Tantalus and Round Top loop is a MUST SEE when you visit Oahu. Even better would be to take one of the many hiking trails and see it up close and personal. Breath taking views, exotic plants and trees, fresh air, and great exercise all within a 5 to 10 minute drive from your Waikiki hotel (traffic permitting).

condensed milk over shave ice

condensed milk over shave ice
Made by jjspw0
You can't go to Hawaii and not have shave ice. The locals eat their shave ice with azuki (red beans), condensed milk, and mochi balls. Waiola Shave Ice grinds their ice very fine and has a multitude of flavors. This is a half Melona and half blueberry shave ice topped with condensed milk.
