Still Trying to Isolate the Subject

Still Trying to Isolate the Subject
Made by Men In Black
Assignment: PCA03 - Isolated Subject Deadline: October 1st, 2007 Mission: Show us an isolated subject. Razor sharp focus on the subject, and completely blurred to annihilation backgrounds. This can be accomplished by using a wide aperture and having a distant background. If using a less sophisticated camera, try using the portrait mode or macro mode. If you cannot get the background out of focus, then choose a featureless background. This is my attempt at an isolated subject. I say attempt because I had major focus issues. I definitely discovering that my eyes are deteriorating and I had a lot of trouble focusing. I ended up going with the autofocus instead of manual because too many of the manual shots were out of focus. Still, the edges of Libby are out of focus, but this is about as good as I could do while laying on the ground. I like this photo slightly more than the previous one because at least here I can claim that the focus is her eye!

Danaan strongly believes that the doctor is the evil. She always cries and pitches a fit at the pediatrician's office. Dr. Cohen is a wonderful pediatrician. She tried to get Danaan to play with blocks. Here, she's checking out Danaan's deformed toe and recommending a course of action. Danaan lucked out today and didn't get any shots because she was running a fever of 101.9 F. We're not sure if she's sick, but she's definitely not teething, so no shots to be on the safe side. Danaan's on Tylenol to control the fever. We go back next week for a re-check and shots. I figured that if Danaan was going to scream, I might as well go ahead and take the picture. The doctor isn't the evil, I am. Today was her nine month checkup.

Libby Longpaw

Libby Longpaw
Made by Men In Black
Libby's tendency to hang her paws off the edges of things (like the cat post, the bed, or off my chest and into my mouth) has earned her the nickname Longpaw. Sometimes she doesn't just hang one paw, she hangs both. She has really, really long legs, too. For reference, she stands around 24 inches at the shoulder. No collection of pictures would be complete without one of Libby in longpaw mode. Libby is lounging on the six foot tall remains of the Amazonia cat tree. We had to remove some elements in order to fit the tree into the corner of our bedroom. The hammock overhangs our bed so that Libby can peer down at us like a vulture.

Newly Dyed Purple Hair

Newly Dyed Purple Hair
Made by Men In Black
We managed to lighten/bleach Jay's hair today (as a Father's Day event) and hopefully nobody will come down with a rash because we didn't pre-test. Then, we dyed it and I can attest that Purple Python gets on everything. Being that we have a white bathroom, it is a very brilliant shade of purple. I take solace in the fact that we have lots and lots of Clorox, so we can bleach out all the purple. Alas, no pictures of Jay were taken while he had the glitter butterflies in his hair. I didn't have plastic hairclips to hold up the strands during the various waiting periods, so I used glitter butterflies. If it is good enough for orchids, it is good enough for Jay's hair.

Today is July 4th and it would have been the perfect opportunity to get a lovely holiday picture of the kids. There was a parade today, we took Danaan out for her first restaurant meal, and we almost set off fireworks. I had been planning to take pictures during the fireworks, but it rained and we tried to light fireworks in the rain. Oh, and we had a tornado warning. I ended up wetter than a drowned cat, we broke 2 lighters, emptied 3 boxes of matches and only got about 5 fireworks to light. We are going to have to have a rain date tomorrow. Anyways, we were exhausted and wet and I forgot to take pictures. Sigh.

018 - First Sippy Drinking

018 - First Sippy Drinking
Made by Men In Black
One of the best things about taking a picture of Danaan every day is that I have my camera more readily available. Tonight, Danaan drank out of her sippy for the very first time and I had my camera on hand to capture it. We've been giving her the sippy cup to play with for several weeks, but she's never tried to drink out of it before. She likes to shake it and hear the water slosh. Tonight, she stuck the spout in her mouth and I could hear the sounds of slurping. I went clickity crazy and took way too many pictures. I feel so lucky that I was able to capture this moment.

When Jay got up this morning, he didn't immediately head off to take his shower. Instead, I heard the sound of photography and saw flashes of light. When I finally rolled out of bed, I saw him trying to . Eventually, he gave up and declared that his camera couldn't handle her fast paced action. So, I stole his idea and took some pictures of the kids and their unearthed goodies while he was in the shower. Apparently while we were trying to catch a few extra winks before the alarm went off, Hill and Danaan dug into his window seat and found these plastic ice cubes.

004 - I will not eat

004 - I will not eat
Made by Men In Black
...applesauce, rice cereal or oat cereal, Mommy I am. I do not like them. I do not like them here or there. I do not like them anywhere. Danaan prefers nursing to eating solid food and she's going to fight it tooth[less] and nail. So far, I've timed her at one hour and forty minutes of continuous screaming over the current food battleground. As cruel as it may seem, I wanted one picture in this project that showed Danaan in her natural state, angry and screaming. She's very strong-willed and she's willing to scream for hours in order to get her way.

009 - Death by Kumquat

009 - Death by Kumquat
Made by Men In Black
For weeks and weeks, Hill has been saying that he wants to eat kumquats as his fruit. We make him eat fruit in order to have junk food and to play video games. Yesterday, I finally found kumquats at the grocery store. So, this morning, I served him up one kumquat. He acted like eating the kumquat was going to be the death of him. I couldn't decide if I liked the or the colored kumquat version better. Jay said the colored kumquat version looked queer.

010 - The Bubble Gun

010 - The Bubble Gun
Made by Men In Black
Hill very seriously shows his sister how to use the bubble gun. First, he checks to see if he has enough ammunition. Danaan looks rather worried. What if he shoots himself in the face with bubbles? Second, Hill demonstrates the proper stance for holding a bubble gun - two hands at all times. Third, Hill checks to see if Danaan is paying attention. She is watching quite intently. Finally, the air is filled with bubbles. Danaan approves.

Made by Men In Black
Hill calls this move his Skyhooper Ninja 3000. I don't know where he comes up with these names. This is my attempt at silhouette. I have an to this shot where I think the attempt at silhouette is better. I don't know if I've made the right choice. However, I chose this shot, versus the other, for today because I thought Hill's kickass Ninja action was more interesting.

Landlocked Felines Fighting Over Tuna

Landlocked Felines Fighting Over Tuna
Made by Men In Black
Why do my cats go crazy at the scent of tuna? Neither one of them has set a paw anywhere near the ocean, or a lake, or river, or any substantial body of water where fish might be supposed to reside. Chicken I could understand, they’ve seen birds, but these are distinctly landlocked felines. We’ve never even had a goldfish. And yet, unerringly, they will tumble over one another like mewling, furry dervishes at the mere whiff of fish.

I took this shot for the Photography Critique Assignment: Isolated Subject because I couldn't figure out why my backgrounds weren't blurring out and why my pictures kept coming in out of focus. Either it is my eyes or I have a lot of hand shake. It looked ok, but I wasn't sure I was supposed to be filling up the frame with her face. Plus, her edges are bit blurry. But, I love my Libby and decided to keep it for personal reasons.

Made by Men In Black
Hill has concocted a grand plan to make his own Star Wars chess set. Here he is with some of the pieces that have been constructed so far. He and his father went to the bookstore and bought a Star Wars sticker book, then Hill found cardboard. There was much coloring and cutting this afternoon, but the chess set is far from complete. I'm going to try for another picture tomorrow of the set's construction progress

D checks out the Pottery Barn catalog. It is never too early to start decorating. First, she must pick out her signature color. Will it be pink or, Mommy's favorite, blue? Actually, D is trying to eat the catalog because glossy paper is very tasty, but the weight of the Pottery Barn catalog defeats her ability to lift the pages to her mouth. She just and I'm amazed at how fast she's getting good at it.

041 - Sweet Potato Face

041 - Sweet Potato Face
Made by Men In Black
Danaan let me feed her in her bouncy seat tonight. Hurray! This is an advance that I hope that we can repeat. She kept spitting out half her mouthful of sweet potato and rice, so she had a perpetual food mustache. She also insisted on digging her fingers into the cup and smearing food over her hands, knees, and feet. She also got it all over my hands in the process. Hill obligingly took this picture.

Hill and his sister don't always play well together, especially when Danaan wants something that she's not allowed to have. At this point, she has chased her brother onto his bed (which he climbed to get away from her) and grabbing at his Leapster. Danaan is banned from touching portable electronics like my camera, Dad's iPod and Hill's Leapster because she likes to throw things.

144 - First Steps
Made by Men In Black
I chose this picture for two reasons. First, Danaan started walking independently, so this is a photo of her first steps. Second, it is the last image of Cannonball alive. We found him dead the next morning under the coffee table. The vet believes it was heart failure. He was only 12 years old and had appeared to be in excellent health. I miss my beloved kitty.
