Figures in the foreground represent the pathfinder and the trapper, the advance guard in the exploration of the Northwest and the Great Lakes country. Behind them is a bit of the Detroit River, Belle Isle, and Canada. The figure of St. Claire is in the background because it was on her feast day that LaSalle, in the first vessel that ever passed through the lakes, entered the body of water now bearing her name [Lake St. Claire] and named it in her honor.
