Makhdoom Ali Mahimi Shah Baba .R.A. Dargah, Mahim, Mumbai - India

Makhdoom Ali Mahimi Shah Baba .R.A. Dargah, Mahim, Mumbai - India

Video link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fUm4zVZ2Ag 10 day Urs/Festival of revered Saint Makhdoom Ali Mahimi Shah Baba (Rehmatullah Allaih) ended on 10th December 09. I have been visiting the Dargah to pay respect to the saint from so many years now but never shot a night shot of it. Planned it and shot this atop a building's terrace. Then climbed it's water tank and clicked this revered Dargah. Did all the climbing so that the visual becomes special .. I hope it is. ================================================================== Saint Makhdoom Ali Mahimi (1372-1431) was a Sufi saint from the Konkan in India, widely acknowledged for his scholarly treatise, liberal views and humanist ideals. Mahimi was born into a family of Arab travellers who had settled down on the island of Mahim, one of the seven islands that later formed the city of Bombay (now Mumbai). Not much is known of his early childhood. He later became the disciple of Mohiuddin Ibne Arabi, a Spanish based saint revered by Muslims. Mahimi's reputation grew after the sultan of Gujarat, Ahmed Shah of the Muzaffarid dynasty, chose him to be the town's Qazi (the head Muslim cleric of a town). Mahimi was the first Indian scholar to have written an exegesis on the Qur'an, which gained critical acclimation from numerous Islamic scholars including Shah Waliullah. Authoring a total of nineteen books, he was given the moniker Qutb-e -Kokan (Kokan's Pole Star). Mahimi is revered by both the Muslims and Hindus, all Muslim sects hold him in high esteem. After his death in 1431, he was buried in Mahim itself. The site later became a dargah (shrine) for devotees. During the annual ten day Urs festival celebrated on the 13th day of Shawwal as per the Muslim calendar, millions of devotees visit his dargah. The highlight of this is a procession of around eight thousand people which begins at the Mahim Police Station, believed to be the site of his residence. On 2005-05-21, the government of Maharashtra named the JJ Flyover after the saint as a tribute to the saint. The 2.1 kilometre flyover is the longest viaduct in the country.

Tea-shop keeper

Tea-shop keeper

This is Aslam, the shopkeeper who looks after the tea shop next to our office. Its more like a canteen where you can get eggs sunny-side up along with buttered buns (biscuits for Americans), hot tea or cold milk and the multitude of snacks that fuel hungry consultants who like to skip lunch. The gentleman to the left is the one who prepares the tea. Tea makers are a problem for Aslam as there is a lot of churn. Apparently the market is good for this job description as I have not seen anyone sticking around for more than 6 months. JPEG straight out of camera. Lightly processed in GIMP.

This old man comes over to the tea shop near the office quite often. He is very lonely and only has the shop keeper for company. His children are in Israel and he keeps telling us that he will go there someday. That day does not seem to come at all. Makes one wonder about getting old. And whether one will have the courage to face life alone with nothing else to look forward to other than the long sleep. Maybe, hope is a wonderful thing. JPEG from the camera. Cropped and mildly processed in GIMP.

Actually this is a shot of workers putting together the swimming pool just beside our office. I never knew how this would turn out till I saw the picture on the computer and then went, Hey wait a minute. It almost feels as if the Pharaoh is here!. That's the throne there on the third or fourth step. Like most things in this world, including money, love and looks, that chair is plastic too. Yes, I work in a very interesting location. JPEG out of camera. Lightly processed in GIMP.

A local train

A local train
Made by wallygrom
These trains are packed, especially at rush hour, where they head in or out from the suburbs. People hang out the sides ... I wonder how many fall. There are separate carriages for men and women. No toilets. They only stop for a few seconds at each station, most people have to jump on while the train is moving. Beyond the tracks is the Dharavi Slum.

Backlit flowers

The trees have started flowering. Summer is in the air and Spring seems to have been skipped over. These flowers were backlit by street lamps. I only wish I had a tripod so that I could take the picture at a lower ISO setting. JPEG from the camera. Cropped and mildly processed in GIMP.

Beyond the railway lines are the Dharavi Slums ... only one of many huge slum areas in Mumbai ... the local trains are packed with commuters, especially during the morning and evening rush hours. There are many different lines, serving all the various suburbs of Mumbai.

He sits under a tree and waits. To deliver a haircut and a shave. Peppered with weather predictions, politics, the price of onions and the story of a son who never calls him. [Number Three of the Bombay Project. As you see, I have decided to take it up]

Remember the time you and me had together. Remember the blue sky, the rusty fence and the jelly like moments. A time capsule? Once upon a time....far far away, deeply rooted in my memory.......Wish you were here.

Picture of a crumbling wall in the street besides the beach. The wall is actually the boundary for the bungalow of the Mayor of Mumbai. Ha! JPEG from the camera. Cropped and mildly processed in GIMP.

This was on the other side of that railway, seen from the railway bridge we were standing on. These are the Dharavi Slums of Mumbai. Possibly the Mariamma Devi Temple.
