Happy Birthday Brightburn! Magrath Mansion, 6240 Ada Boulevard The 604 square metre (5,500 square foot) Georgian revival inspired mansion was built in 1912 for William Magrath. Erected on a 10-lot site for $85,000 (a staggering amount of money for its day) and fronting a boulevard named for William's wife Ada, the 14-room mansion was distinguished by giant classical columns, a colonnade curving around the verandah and Porte cochere. Morehouse designed the mansion to be the most elegant private residence in the city and it featured the finest of materials mahogany, Italian marble, handpainted silk and linen wallpaper and Bohemian crystal. The craftsmen's attention to detail produced intricate detailing of cherubs and floral patterns, stencilled on ceiling panels and walls. Working without power tools, it took these artisans literally weeks to complete the meticulous work. The mansion boasted central heating, electricity (a rarity then), a swimming pool in the basement, burglar alarms on all the doors and a telephone in every room. Mahogany, Italian marble, hand painted silk and linen and Bohemian crystal give the house distinction and class. Magrath Mansion was declared a Provincial Historic Resource in 1975 the first residence in the province to be so designated.
