NYC - West Village: Magnolia Bakery
Made by wallyg
Magnolia Bakery, opened in 1996 by Allysa Torey and Jennifer Appell, is as known for its ridiculously long lines ad late hours as it is for its cupcakes and old-fashioned depression era icebox cakes. The cupcakes are so popular that Magnolia limits purchases to 12 per customer. Torey and Appell's friendship dissolved in 1999, which begat the next great cupcake shop in the city--Buttercup. In 2003, a former Magnolia manager opened Billy's, which begat Sugar Sweet Sunshine. Magnolia entered the national vernacular when it was portrayed as the symbol of New York's decadent bakery goodness on an episode of Sex and the City, and then when it was prominently featured in the Saturday Night Live digital short / YouTube viral sensation, Lazy Sunday in 2005.
