At the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, a number of known buildings can be found: the Palace on the Dam, the New Church, the former head post office now shopping center Magna Plaza. The post office was build 1895-1899. This photo was taken beginning of 1900. Photo taken in the Amsterdam Historical Museum anno 1900. Below you can see the same photo today.. Built in 1899 the Magna Plaza building has been originally Amsterdam’s Central Post Office. The architect followed the mood of the period giving it several crowned gothic towers and a rich late gothic ornamental façade. The building has been a technological wonder of its time. Built on 4650 piles stuck in the muddy ground, it had a huge main hall, galleries hanging above it and a lot of natural light through the huge windows and a glass roof. During the thorough reconstruction in 1990, the escalators were added inside and the interior has been turned into the Amsterdam first shopping mall.

Magna Plaza Shopping in Amsterdam is a very elegant 19th century building (one of the ten most precious monuments in Amsterdam). One of the few shopping malls in Amsterdam just had to be in a Neo-Gothic monumental building, designed by dutch architect Cornelius Hendrik.Peters to be a Central Post Office at about the same time Petrus Cuypers completed the Rijksmuseum (1885) and the Central Station (1889). Right behind the Queens Palace on the Dam Square, this building looks like a palace too. By the way this is just an iPhone picture edited on Picasa.

So what's next...2.000.000 .... I think I might stop at this beautiful peak ;-) Ongelooflijk maar na 16 maanden op Flickr heb ik meer dan 1.000.000 views!!!! gehad. The Lego When the Phantom Menace Video (yes you read it right) was released. There was some sort of competition across europe, for the best release promotion. In a shopping centre in Amsterdam a 4 meter high Darth Maul image was made entirely of Lego. In 3 or 4 days we made this huge image, and I believe this was the winning promotion. What the price was I do not know to this day. But we had a lot of fun making it.

I love this building! Very spacious with lovely arches and escalators across the central void. But I don't like shops that don't have any prices in the window displays! The photos would have benefited from using a tripod, but I wasn't going to lug one around so had to rely (again) on the FZ5s image stabiliser to provide some half decent handheld shots. : Power transporters --> People transporters

This cat was in a jazz trio that played next door to where we ended up eating late. We left at the same time and I watched him struggle briefly as he got everything balanced; then he was gone. Like everyone on a bike in Amsterdam, they make great time. And just when I was looking for excuses as to no taking a bike everywhere too... He's got an upright bass that he has balanced on the bars. Killer.

I was instantly struck at all of the bikes and their cosmetic conditions. These bikes are for getting around; period. I only took the shots of the ones that caught my eye. Typically they are all crowded and slammed together while locked up.

The roofline of Magna Plaza has a bit of 17th century feel to it. It was actually completed in 1899 as the main post office in Amsterdam. In 1990, it was converted into central Amsterdam's first shopping mall. See next photo for its interior.
