Norway Pavilion

A portion of Epcot's Norway Pavilion viewed from one of the Friendship boats on World Showcase Lagoon. This is the Stave Church area of the Pavilion. I was able to take this shot thru the open upper half of one of the boats' doors. The Norway pavilion is the most recent nation to be added to World Showcase. It was officially opened in June 1988 by Crown Prince Harald in a ceremony that was broadcast live to Norway. The original idea was to create a Nordic Pavilion that would combine elements from various countries into one exhibit. Three countries were consulted, but it finally ended up with investors from Norway raising the required US$30 million as to create an exclusive national pavilion. Disney contributed the other one-third of the construction cost. In 1992, the investors sold their stake to Disney. Since nearly as many people visit Epcot as live in Norway, the government felt it still was a good promotional tool for their tourism industry. The federal government continued to contribute US$200,000 annually for five years to help fund the exhibit. Renewed in 1997 for a further 5 years, the government stopped payments in 2002, against the recommendations from their American embassy. (wikipedia)

After the snow filled cold weather shots I have been recently posting, I thought a sunny day shot would be in order. Shown above is the dragon topiary from the China Pavilion at EPCOT Center during their annual Flower and Garden festival. I must have really taken a liking to this topiary as I had recently posted the shot below of him and still have another sitting in the queue.

After that, it was back to Epcot for dinner. We sat in the mexican restaurant and had excellent chow. The illusion of being outside was so complete that I forgot on several occasions that I was inside. Ironically, it was pouring rain outside at the time, so it was just as well I was within. (I had the Sopa Azteca and the Ceviche. Liana got some Chicken in Mole.)

After riding the Maelstrom, as with most of Disney's attractions, you exit through a store. In the Puffin’s Roost, most everyone likes to put on sets of Viking horns and pose for a picture by this giant troll found in the shop. This shop offers Norwegian trolls in all shapes and sizes. They are very cool, but also very expensive!

I rarely get an interesting shot from this dark ride. Where this was taken is a very cool part of the ride. I don't know what's really going on here except maybe the swirling lights represent time travel and trolls are popular from fantasy stories in Norway.

I'm surprised that the Maelstrom attraction participates in the Fastpass system because I have never seen a wait for this ride longer then five or ten minutes. There are not many rides in World Showcase but this is a really good one!
