This is the view from the grounds of Holyrood Palace, the royal residence dating back to the 15th century (with 12th century Abbey ruins right alongside it) that made quite an impression on Barracuda during our tour inside the Palace that we weren’t allowed to take pictures of. I think his favorite room was the Great Gallery, a long hall painted green that contains 161 portraits of all Scottish monarchs that were commissioned to be painted within 2 years. Of course no one knows what the majority of them actually looked like, so the painter gave every one of them the same nose. What a way to mark a family connection! Speaking of family, my mission over the next decade is to track down more information about my 6th-great grandfather who was born in the early 18th century in Edinburgh then bailed on the scene for America. So far I’ve had no conclusive luck other than his American census records, but we’ll be back when Barracuda is a teenager to spend at least two weeks in Edinburgh and outlying areas. San Francisco is nice but my heart is here. I don’t want to leave even though Paris is on the horizon after another day at sea. My French great-grandmother’s family is too much of a mystery to figure out. They deliberately changed their name & claimed they were both Italian and French in the same census year (they somehow were counted twice) so we’re not sure what they were hiding!
