Luxor Temple is a large Ancient Egyptian temple complex located on the east bank of the River Nile in the city today known as Luxor (ancient Thebes).

The Luxor Temple was almost totally buried by sand. Here and there were some stones sticking from the ground. People thought it would be okay to build a mosque there. Then, after discovering that there was more, they decided to free the temple of the sand, which resulted in a mosque that sits atop the temple in about 5 metres height. It's still in use and you have to enter it now from the other side.

Christianity spread in Egypt centuries ago, but they had the problem that they didn't have churches. Their solution was simple: Why not use the old temples and change them into a church? What you can see here is a wall with christian art plastered onto the old templewalls with hieroglyphics.
