Haight at Fillmore

I finally got around to processing a couple of rolls of film from several weeks ago. I had one frame left on the second roll, and since I didn't feel like carrying the camera around with only one exposure left (I was out of black-and-white film), it sat in the camera. I finally got around to taking it out the other day when I went to the post office, and when I upon processing it and scanning a few frames, I discovered scratches that run from end to end, through each frame. I discovered that the tape which secures the light-blocking paper wrap to itself after taking the exposed film out of the camera had come off the previous roll and was stuck to the pressure plate on the camera's film back/door. Somehow, I'd not seen it stuck there when I loaded this roll, despite that I couldn't understand where the tape had gone when I'd taken out the previous roll. Somehow, I'd not seen it sticking to the pressure plate. I lost three street portraits as a result of the scratches, although several hours of Photoshop diligence might salvage them.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that my neighborhood had sprouted a suggestion box. The cards and pens disappear quickly, but are restocked frequently. One clever bit is that there are two slots: a private one, guarded by a combination lock, and a public one that can be opened by anyone. Anyone can read all the public submissions, and that's most of the fun. It's a fascinating collection. My favorite so far is something like Someone should figure out what the ants are up to over by that tree, to which someone else added a few choice words of agreement. (I haven't found the ants yet, but I'll keep looking.) There's an sfzero.org tag on it, so it wasn't hard to track down the people who put it up. Their description uses typical modern art language, so it's a bit pretentious for my tastes, but I like the box and I've enjoyed chatting with people around it.

I was let out of work early that day because the fire's smoke had reached the air intake for the building ventalation. I happened to have my XA loaded with Scala in my coat pocket that day so I grabbed a bus up the hill on Haight Street until it could go no further. Finally, a GPS solution

Finally, a GPS solution
Made by JonBauer
I've tried several GPS solutions and hadn't found any that I really liked for both a motorcycle and a car. Garmin finally released one, the Zumo 550, that answers my GPS prayers. Features that I required: * Water proof - sometimes the weather isn't predictable on a motorbike * Routing - sometimes you want to pre-plan your route * Form factor - Needed something small that you can stick in your pocket (the Zumo even comes with a cool case) * Car and motorcycle mounting hardware (they even use RAM stuff) Bonus features: * Bluetooth - kinda cool - working perfectly with both my Treo 650 and my Blackberry Pearl * MP3 files - can have up to 1,000 songs (the Zumo even shows you album art!) Thanks Garmin!

This potentially confusing Holga shot is from lower Haight Street in San Francisco while waiting for a French Toast Orgy* from Kate's Kitchen. I was originally taking a picture of the cat in the shop window, and ended up with curious reflections from the street behind me. All sorts of interesting levels and mirrors. The cat was pretty non-plussed and returned promptly to napping once I left. * french toast orgy /french tohst awr-jee/ noun 1.a pile of sliced french toast covered with a layer of granola and yogurt, piled with fruit and drizzled with honey. about two times the size of the average male's head.

Circus Finelli

Circus Finelli
Made by J Bourbon
Circus Finelli is a four-women clown troupe specializing in irreverent, cartoonish circus comedy. They are best known for their physicality, live eccentric music, and multi-lingual performance... So their web site says. I saw these ladies performing on Haight St. across from the bar Toronado, a must stop for a great beer and people watching. It's a little down Haight, past all the tourist clogged Ashbury-Masonic area. Well, they sounded great and were a lot of fun to shoot. Check them out www.circusfinelli.com

Unwinding with The Notorious at Moltov's after a John Wayne birthday honorary squirt gun fight at Alamo Square, the jukebox was rockin good tunes. Finally getting comfortable with the tilt/shift concerning manual focus, focal plane alignment and exposure compensation. This lens is a lot of work but I love it! :) The title is a Strongbad reference.

This is my 18 year old roommate. She never pays rent, and refuses to take out the garbage, wash her dishes or buy food. She regularly climbs on top of my head in the middle of the night and makes annoying grunting noises each morning in an attempt to wake me an hour earlier than I'd like. All she does is sleep and eat and whine when things just aren't quite right. She's my true love. There is only one Vivre.

The Wiggle is on of many bike routes in San Francisco that help you avoid hills on you way between two points. The Wiggle connects Market St. and downtown with Golden Gate Park, The Sunset and Richmond neighborhoods via the Panhandle. Buena Vista Park, a major hill is located below The Haight on the map. Almost every street to the left of the Wiggle heads uphill towards the park, sometimes steeply.

These are nice despite the obviously missing turret on the left. There are a number of houses missing turrets in SF; one reason to remove them would be due to earthquakes. In pre-1906 SF photos, I've noticed that there are many more buildings with not just turrets, but huge towers, which obviously aren't something you want to be standing near during the big one.

More tilt/shift tests, playing with non 90º angles of focal plane, which is where genuine tilt/shift really shines over the photoshop tricks that to mimmic. In case it's not obvious, the focal plane here goes from Rob's face out towards the van outside, leaving the chair and beer on the right out of focus.

Sometimes you need to put the electronics away, grab a real book and spend the afternoon sitting by a window reading. I wish I had a big plushy chair for this but for now, my dining room chairs will do. This is enough is a little mental reboot that I've needed the past few days.

Probably a NextBus error, the 77-minute wait soon shifted to 12-minutes. The ad below suggests calling 511 for NextBus info. Apparently MUNI believes that knowing exactly when your unreliable bus will finally arrive somehow gives you extra time in your day.

Hang Five. Lower Haight. Banners like these adorn lower Haight Street, which to me suggests some sort of official endorsement of the skate pirate lifestyle. Yarrr. Great artwork here, by the great Michael Sieben.

As the four-alarm fire at Haight and Fillmore was winding down, I saw these firefighters from Station Number 8 gathered a block away at Fillmore and Page. Shot on expired (May 2004) Tri-X... exposed without compensation and processed in Diafine.
