Lost Bridge at Lost Valley

Lost Bridge at Lost Valley

The wooden footbridge over Clark Creek, at the beginning of the trail to Lost Valley. This was taken a few days after the storm that dropped a massive amount of rain over the Ozarks (about a foot or so), that caused some damaging floods. The flood waters broke apart the bridge, carrying the middle section downstream about 30 feet or so. It's a shame, since Lost Valley is one of the most popular trails along the Buffalo National River. But a few days after this shot was taken, the National Park Service announced that: Lost Valley will remain closed until further notice. The bridge over Clark Creek was a total loss, and much of the trail was scoured, including the lower section which was engineered to accommodate wheelchair access. Near the top end of the trail below Eden Cave, there is a segment of trail in danger of slumping off into the creek and is considered a high risk to visitor safety. Engineers have already assessed damages and are developing plans for bridge replacement and repairs to the trail system. Emergency repairs to trails may be completed in three weeks, but full repair that incorporates redesign, materials, and construction is a long way off with an estimated price tag of $250,000. When Lost Valley does reopen, visitors will find that tables and fire grates have been removed and that camping is no longer allowed. This interim measure has been taken for several reasons, including the recognition of flash flood danger to campers, the loss of vegetative cover, and the overall poor design of many of the sites and the campground as a whole. Long-term evaluation of alternative road access, campground location, and other facilities will be on the planning table, but in the meanwhile the park will make every effort to maintain Lost Valley as a day-use area. I hope that they can find some place near Lost Valley to open up for camping. There aren't many other places around Boxley Valley where you camp otherwise.

We didn't hike the trail to Lost Valley, but did stop off at the trailhead to make use of its...facilities. This bridge goes over Clark Creek and continues on through the wonderful trail through Lost Valley. Although we didn't hike the trail, we did discover a neat old church and cemetery nearby...some shots of that soon. Taken by Lost Valley, in the Boxley Valley of the Buffalo National River, Arkansas.

This footbridge serves as the beginning of the hiking trail at Lost Valley which leads to Eden Falls. This shot was inspired by a similar shot from Brian Cormack. His version looks better and captured more Fall color. Here's the one from Brian:
