hello morning!

hello morning!
Made by Celeste M (off & on)
February 28, 2011: This photo won a shared 5th place in the February Challenge ~ Beautiful Blooms in the group . Thank you very much! This is the first time ever that I've won two awards in a single Flickr contest. My purple cascade took 1st place. I'm very fond of morning glories, and one edge of the East Village community garden in Long Beach has a huge number of vines. Sometimes I see a flower that I like but it is too far away for my macro lens to capture. This is an example, an archive photo from 2009. (Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 226mm, f/5.2, 1/1000 sec., ISO 100, early afternoon sun, handheld) A word about archive photos: I've learned a lot about myself and my work in the course of posting almost nothing but archive photos when for health reasons I've been unable to get out and create new work. First, it seems to me that my photographic vision, what draws me to capture certain images, has not changed a lot in two-plus years. What has changed is my ability to spot the gems as I go through a shoot's worth of images. I think I've become better at that. And, despite the fact that I have many years of Photoshop experience behind me (and did even 2 years ago), I am much better at post-processing today than I was then. Part of that is experience and ongoing learning (thank you, Kelby Training), and another part is better tools (a nod to Topaz Labs and their revolutionary plug-ins). Based on my own experience, I would recommend a trip into your archives for an extended series of photos to get a sense of where you are and how far you've come. 'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Made by bhampton1963
Original shot on 35mm film with a Pentax K1000 in San Pedro, California. Model: Dawn Asamura On the corner of main street Just tryin' to keep it in line. You say you wanna move on and You say I'm falling behind. Can you read my mind? Can you read my mind? I never really gave up on Breakin' out of this two-star town. I got the green light, I got a little fight. I'm gonna turn this thing around. Can you read my mind? Can you read my mind? The good old days, the honest man; The restless heart, the Promised Land, A subtle kiss that no one sees; A broken wrist and a picture piece. Oh well I don't mind, if you don't mind. 'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine Before you go, can you read my mind? It’s funny how you just break down, Waitin' on some sign I pull up to the front of your driveway With magic soakin' my spine. Can you read my mind? Can you read my mind? The teenage queen, the loaded gun; The drop dead dream, the Chosen One, A southern drawl, a world unseen; A city wall and a trampoline. Oh well I don't mind, if you don't mind 'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine Before you jump, tell me what you find when you read my mind. Slippin’ in my faith until I fall. You never returned that call. Woman, open the door, don't let it sting I wanna breathe that fire again. She said I don't mind, if you don't mind 'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine. Put your back on me, Put your back on me, Put your back on me. The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun. Can you read my mind? Can You Read My Mind? by the Killers

ferris wheel at twilight

Here's another of my 17 favorites from my 24-hour shoot last weekend, one that did not make my final 12. This ferris wheel, an homage to the historical Pike (an amusement park) in Long Beach, California, is part of the new Pike. You can see restaurants in the background (Chili's and Outback Steak House), which are a big attraction to tourists and convention visitors. (Zuiko 9-18mm zoom at 15mm [30mm equivalent in full-frame 35mm], f/5, 1/8 sec., ISO 400, twilight, handheld -- a crazy attempt, I know, but it worked, thanks to Olympus image stabilization) I truly appreciate all your good wishes in the Say Cheese, Long Beach contest, but I came home with no prizes tonight. I'm OK with that, as they displayed 11 of my 12 entries in the exhibit (only one per photographer was guaranteed) and featured my hot racer photo in a pre-awards showing of photos the judges and the contest organizer apparently thought were special (I took it as a sort of honorary mention). The two judges are newspaper photographers and seemed to favor people pictures above all. milkweed seeds

I've turned in my 12 images from the 24-hour photo contest that ran from noon Saturday to noon Sunday in Long Beach, California. This is from my Sunday visit to one of my favorite places, the East Village Community Garden. As a designated Monarch Waystation, the garden has lots of milkweed. I caught these seeds and filaments glistening in morning sun and felt good about the nourishment the plants would offer future monarch generations. (Zuiko 50mm macro, f/7.1, 1/160 sec., ISO 100, morning sun, handheld) About 200 images submitted in the contest will be on exhibit this Friday (September 3, 2010) at the Bixby Knolls First Friday art event (Bixby Knolls is an upscale Long Beach neighborhood), and winners will also be announced. It's all up to the judges now, and all I know is that they are professional photographers. I will be thrilled if I win something, but I'm not counting on it. Competition at past versions of this event has been strong, and it all comes down to what the judges like. Guaranteed I will let you all know if I do win something. :) In the new Flickr, click anywhere in the image to see the large view on black (or press L to view in light box (same thing).

Vincent Thomas Bridge

This was the view from the back of our Cruise Ship as we departed San Pedro Harbour, Los Angeles on a 3 night cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. Exposure: 30mm, 1/50 sec @ f/2.4, ISO400 on the back of a moving, vibrating ship. I enjoy it best Some notes on the bridge from www.sanpedrochamber.com/champint/vtbrdg.htm : Completed in 1963, San Pedro's Golden Gate was the first bridge of its kind to be constructed on pilings. Construction required 92,000 tons of Portland cement, 13,000 tons of lightweight concrete, 14,100 tons of steel and 1,270 tons of suspension cable. It is designed to withstand winds of 90 miles per hour, double that required by code. The overall length of the bridge is 6,050 feet, with a main suspension span of 1,500 feet and 500-foot spans on either side. The towers are 365 feet high. Named for one of San Pedro's own, an orphan from the streets and wharves who went on to become a State Assemblyman, it was The Hon. Vincent Thomas who cut the ribbon at the dedication ceremony.

glowing sea nettle (explored)

Flickr Explore #66 - December 6, 2009 The threat of rain sent me indoors this afternoon, to the Aquarium of the Pacific. I know from ample past experience that trying to shoot in the aquarium's combination of low light, moving creatures, and light from other displays inevitably reflecting off the plexiglas is basically an exercise in masochism. Oh, and it also doesn't help that high ISO is my camera's one weakness. (I forgive it that weakness since it is light and easy for me to handle and otherwise a stellar performer -- and I do very little low-light shooting anyway.) The jellyfish are among my favorites at the aquarium, and this one is a West Coast Sea Nettle. I took lots of photos and was ecstatic when I saw previews of a few shots, as they were easily the best I'd ever managed of the jellies. This was shot with my Zuiko 50mm Macro, wide open (f/2.0, 1/30 sec. handheld, ISO 800). Additional post-processing in Imagenomic Noiseware and Topaz Detail. (Long Beach, California USA) A must-see

Flickr Explore #34 - February 3, 2010 February 13, 2011: This photo won 4th place in the Orange(ish) competition in the group . Thank you very much! I was offline most of the evening on Sunday, Jan. 31st because I attended a special Photographers Night at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California. Imagine 300 photographers, no screaming kids, and thoughtfully placed black curtains to block some reflections. Fun! This shot was taken at the large tank of West Coast sea nettles -- gorgeous, graceful creatures. These were very popular with the photographers. (Zuiko 50mm macro, ISO 1600, f/3.2, 1/80 sec., handheld, post-processed in Noiseware by Imagenomic.) Since many of you seemed interested in noise reduction, I've posted a portion of the unprocessed image in the first comment box so you can see just what the noise looked like before I ran Noiseware. The image is uncropped. Really beautiful in the larger view

Got up 0 dark 30 this morning to get out and shoot. Overcast mornings are a crap shoot at best for shooting. LA has been my run lately but today I decided on Long Beach. Shoot wasn't going well. Overcast sky tends to lend itself to flat images. After walking around looking for some comps it just so happened that the clouds started to part. This is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. In this shot the reflections in the water is what really caught my eye everything after that was easy. pink morning glow

Made by Celeste M (off & on)
I'm beginning to think that flowers sometimes find me, or at least poke their petals up in unexpected places and seem to proclaim, Look at me, look how photogenic I am! That's what happened here, as I was walking along Rainbow Marina and Shoreline Village in Long Beach and mostly watching for birds with my longest zoom lens mounted. I had stopped to admire the view of the Queen Mary from a spot next to Parkers Lighthouse restaurant when I spotted a beautifully lit patch of pink bougainvilleas, all cheery in the morning sun. (Fortunately my macro lens was in a pocket of the vest I wear when shooting.) I hope the cheerfulness of these blooms brightens your day! I have already posted the 12 images I entered in the 24-hour photo contest that ran from noon last Saturday to noon Sunday in Long Beach, California. In case you were curious, during that time I captured 517 images, kept 197 of those, and ended up with 17 favorites that I had to narrow down to 12. Here's one that made it into the 17 but not the final 12. Given my love of flowers, I tried not to let the flowers dominate my entries. ;) (Zuiko 50mm macro, f/7.1, 1/60 sec., ISO 400, open shade, handheld) I just realized that this image is my 1,000th photo posted to Flickr! I will be offline tomorrow evening because of the exhibit and awards ceremony associated with the contest. Thank you all for your comments and support! This is one of my finds from a leisurely walk last Saturday in the East Village Arts District in Long Beach, California. I headed for home shortly after this, as storm clouds were gathering. The soft light from the overcast sky brought out the full intensity of color in the bougainvillea bracts, one of the reasons I love shooting flowers under this kind of diffused light. (Zuiko 50mm macro, f/3.5, 1/125 sec., ISO 400, heavy overcast, handheld) Regular visitors to my stream may have noticed a preponderance of pink in my recent uploads. I am (like many others) honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer survivors, and the millions (including my mother) who have been taken from us by this disease. Again from my archives (February 2009): I captured this insect (a wasp of some kind, but I don't know the variety) checking out some milkweed blooms. He was moving pretty fast, so I used a wide aperture to get a relatively fast shutter speed. (Zuiko 35mm macro, f/3.5, 1/640 sec., ISO 100, filtered early afternoon sun, handheld) ID update: Based on some web research, this is a paper wasp (species Polistes), an unaggressive wasp that is considered beneficial because it preys on undesirable insects. Again based on my research, this may be Polistes dorsalis, a tentative ID. I am improving slowly but still taking it easy until I am 100% recovered. I will visit at least some of your streams tonight. In the new Flickr, click anywhere in the image to see the large view on black -- or press L to view in light box (same thing).

monarch on milkweed (explored)

monarch on milkweed (explored)
Made by Celeste M (off & on)
Saturday in the East Village community garden was truly magical this week. One of the gardeners pointed out a monarch butterfly recently out of its chrysalis and drying its wings in the sun and breeze. They're easy to photograph at this stage because they don't fly until their wings are ready. Then came the magic -- this gorgeous creature soared into the air (my heart soaring with it!) and landed on some nearby milkweed blossoms. I was shooting with a long lens to avoid scaring the spectacular little creature. I shot and shot while this voracious butterfly dined on milkweed nectar, and flitted from one blossom to the next. One of the gardeners commented, she is posing for you, and I suppose she was -- although I have no idea how one tells female and male monarch butterflies apart. :) Explore #139, April 5, 2009

I had a very unique client shoot yesterday which took me to Shoreline Park in Long Beach. Photographed a yoga instructor in various poses on the beach and park, and then the incredible showed up with his D300 and lighting equipment to help out. After we were done, Steve was nice enough to let me experiment with his Sigma 10-20 and Lee Foundation Kit, Darrell Benson reverse neutral density filter and here with the tobacco filter. As you can tell, I was hooked. Believe it or not this is almost straight out of the camera minus a little bit of curves adjustment. I'm all about filters. Thanks Steve! Exposure: 25sec Aperture: f/9.0 Focal Length: 10 mm ISO Speed: 100 Many, many more to come. Lighthouses are behind barns on my interesting things list.

The Queen Mary is a retired ocean liner that sailed the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for the Cunard Line (then Cunard-White Star when the vessel entered service). Built by John Brown and Company, Clydebank, Scotland, she was designed to be the first of Cunard's planned two-ship weekly express service from Southampton to Cherbourg to New York, in answer to the mainland European superliners of the late 1920s and early 1930s. After their release from World War II troop transport duties, Queen Mary and her running mate RMS Queen Elizabeth commenced this two-ship service and continued it for two decades until Queen Mary's retirement in 1967. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is permanently berthed in Long Beach, California serving as a museum ship and hotel. ~ Wikipedia

Flickr Explore #36 - February 1, 2010 I was offline most of the evening on Sunday (yesterday) because I attended a special Photographers Night at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California. Imagine 300 photographers, no screaming kids, and thoughtfully placed black curtains to block some reflections. Fun! These are the notoriously difficult-to-photograph moon jellies. In fact, I overheard one fellow with some very expensive gear telling another similarly equipped guy, Don't bother with those white jellyfish. They're impossible. I shot this at ISO 1600 and post-processed in Noiseware (by Imagenomic) to deal with the inevitable noise. These jellies are difficult but certainly not impossible, and I'm sure many other photographers got some great captures. I'm happy with mine!

The glow of purple in the heart of this orange flower attracted my eye, and my lens followed shortly thereafter (East Village community garden) Flickr Explore #457 May 1, 2009 October 22, 2009: The votes are in from the judges panel for The Nature of Long Beach photo contest sponsored by Partners of Parks, and I am very honored that they chose this image for the top award, the Grand Prize! (I am celebrating!) October 1, 2009: This photo won 1st place in the People's Choice Competition portion of The Nature of Long Beach photo contest sponsored by Partners of Parks (nature-themed contest). One of my festive images leading up to Christmas: a decorated boat lighting up its slip in the downtown marina (Long Beach, California) and ready to participate in any of the Christmas boat parades that are very popular in this area. Notice the lack of noise even at ISO 800 -- thanks to Noiseware by Imagenomic, which controls the noise without turning important details to mush. (Zuiko 40-150mm zoom at 88mm, f/4, 1/15 sec., ISO 800, available nighttime light, handheld) I will be signing off early again tonight (I'm still recovering from an infection that has been leaving me very tired). A sandpiper taking flight from the edge of Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach, California. The original was quite pale, at least in the water areas, because of gray skies. I reworked the image, using a texture layer to add density to the water. (Zuiko 40-150mm zoom at 150mm, f/4.5, 1/320 sec., ISO 100, overcast, handheld) Texture courtesy of Shadowhouse Creations. I am still taking it easy and signing off early (infection is gone and I'm improving slowly but swelling and pain remain, keeping me mostly off my feet).
