Wrap up warm and take a magical walk through SYON PARK'S Enchanted Woodland. Over a thousand lights will illuminate your journey through the beautiful gardens. As winter draws in the skies become dark and nature prepares for sleep, SYON PARK will be transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour. Hulking oaks reflect the contortions of their bark in the seemingly endless depths of the lake, while bamboos dance with colour and weeping willow glow like fire. The team at SYON use the latest lighting effects to create subtle, magnificent and dramatic effects ensuring that you are truly astounded by this remarkable event.

As soon as you walk in the heat and humidity hit you hard, so I stripped off my coat but just had to put up with my long-sleeved t-shirt...the next thing I noticed was that my camera lense was totally fogged up! Luckily it cleared all by itself after about 5 minutes (as the temperature of the lense equalised with the ambient temperature)...phew!

Giant Atlas moth, deceased

When I first saw this, I couldn't work out if it was a butterfly/moth or just a leaf of some exotic plant that happened to look like one. A young lady I met a bit later on insisted that I should take a look at the dead Giant Atlas, which turned out to be this.

Leaf Cutter Ants

From their perspex home by the entrance the leaf cutter ants run the gauntlet over a watery death below to a hanging tray covered in leaves for them to munch (this keeps them neatly isolated from the rest of the foliage)...

A butterfly feeds from a flower in the London Butterfly House in Syon Park. The Butterfly House is closing this Autumn, when a Radisson Hotel is due to be built on the site, and is desperately looking for a new location.

I was very very lucky to spot this shot. I'd been there for about an hour by this point so I'm very glad I stuck it out that long. I don't know what the butterfly is, but Juggzy says the flower's a hibiscus.

A closeup on the scary owl eye pattern...This butterfly was the daddy, must have been 5-6 inches long on each wing, if spread it would have looked seriously large, and with those eye markings...woah.... ;)

A butterfly, possibly a Lime Swallowtail

Might be a Lime Swallowtail, not entirely sure. It's sitting on a plant in the leafcutter ants' tank. I didn't get any really good photos of the ants but they were very cool.

Obviously the flowers don't quite manage to feed all the little butterflies...(of which there are *swarms*)...

Owl butterfly feasting on rotting banana

They had various little stations around the garden to attract the butterflies. This one had rotting fruit.

This old butterfly had obviously been in the wars! They can still fly perfectly well like that though...

Hope my mini water garden works out! ;) The ones at the London butterfly house are simply stunning...

Mmmm...obviously smelled nice to the little ones, but smelt pretty bad to my nostrils... ;P

Mist, Pier, reflections, cold winter's morning. A little cliche but works well.

I think they're soaked in sugar water. Don't know what kind of butterfly it is.

Insert not a butterfly expert disclaimer here, but it looks like one to me.

These ones were by far the most common, and they sat still longest too...

Looks like an owl's eye, designed to scare off potential predators...
