McDonald's of Thailand

McDonald's of Thailand
Made by GOPBI
Found this in my condo mailbox this morning!... Gee.. how did they know... A few things interesting about what is sold here versus what 's in most US-based McDonald's.. A) The breakfast sandwiches are on regular buns, not muffins.. B) The pies are taro, corn and pineapple, all sweet-- but not cherry and apple.. C) They have a pork burger, called the samurai burger.. Given the strength of the baht and/or weakness of the US dollar, everything here is very close in price to the US.. So it's not cheap for the average working class Thai.. Much like McDonald's in the Philippines and China, there is more chicken items here than you'd see on a US menu.. The 1711 on the side is their delivery service. Unlike the US where there is no McDonald's delivery, here in Bangkok as well as a few other major cities, they do deliver 24/7 in most parts of town for a charge of B20 above your food/drink cost.. I use them when I have a french fries craving and I'm just to lazy to take out the car or hop on my motorbike.. B20 is about $0.64 today, so the delivery charge is rather small.

Wat Ratchanaddaram

Loha Prasat, also written Loh Prasat and Loha Prasad, is a multi-tiered square-shaped pagoda at Wat Ratchanaddaram. The name Loha Prasat means Iron Monastery and the name refers to the 37 metal spires on the pagoda. These 37 spires represent the 37 virtues that lead to enlightenment. Construction of it was started during the reign of King Rama III (King Nangklao or in full, Prabath Somdej Pra Paramadhiwarasetha Maha Jessadabodindra Siammintarawirodom Borommadhammikkarajadhirat Boromanathbopitra Phra Nangklao Chaoyuhua) with the construction of Wat Ratchanaddaram, but after 150 years of on-and-off construction, it was only recently completed during the present reign of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. From the outside, Loha Prasat appears to be three storeys high, but it is actually a seven storey structure.

This monastery is very special, with five levels to climb, each floor quiet and beautiful. Originally conceived as a chedi to compliment the Wat, it has since evolved into an elaborate Meditation Chamber. Meditation cells can be seen at intersections dissected by passages on each level of the building. They all run from north to south and from east to west. The actual prasat [monastery or castle] itself consists of five concentric square towers with the outer, middle and center structures being crowned with cast iron spires hence the name Metal Castle. www.luxury-thailand-travel.com/wat-rachanadda.html

Just inside the north-east entrance to the old city precincts, on the city's main street, Ratchadamnoen Road, is the temple of Wat Ratchanadda. In this temple is one of the most unique temple structures in Bangkok: the Loha Prasat. The prasat appears almost Burmese in design, although in fact it's a copy of an old style of Buddhist structure found in Sri Lanka, but now almost unknown. It was begun in the early 19th century by Rama III, but only recently completed. HPIM1282

Loha Prasat it is presently the only metal-based Buddhist construction left in the world, making it a viable candidate for Unesco World Heritage Site status. It derived its name from the first structure of this kind built in India by a female devotee of Visakha, which was a two-storey building, featuring 1,000 cells for monks, with each cell able to take two or three monks. That original structure has a golden spire.

Located at the intersection of Ratchadamnoen and Mahachak Road near the Democracy Monument in Bangkok. The temple was by King Nangklao (Rama III) for Mom Chao Ying Sommanus Wattanavadi (หม่อมเจ้าหญิงโสมนัสวัฒนาวดี) in 1846. The pagoda is a replica of the Loha Prasat built in India. Thanks to for posting the name of this temple earlier.

Each tier of Loha Prasat has passageways leading from it going north-south and east-west. They number fifteen in each direction, on the ground level. At the intersection of the passageways are small meditation cells. This is modelled after Sri Lankan monasteries that can have as many as a thousand cells, but at Loha Prasat, the number is only about half of that.

King Dutthagamini of Anurajapura in Sri Lanka also built one in 161 BC. It was a nine-storey pagoda with a roof of copper plates. This structure has since been destroyed by fire, and only its 1600 stone pillars remain. The architects who designed the Loha Prasat of Bangkok had visited the ruins in Sri Lanka and derived the design to blend with Thai architecture.

It's the third metal temple ever, modeled after earlier metal temples in India and Sri Lanka, and now the only one in existence. It has 37 metal spires, signifying the 37 virtues toward enlightenment.
