i was supposed to attend the august flickrmeet for the los angeles group. i wasn't particular thrilled about the event, the sunset junction music festival i think it was called, but it was a chance to meet up with fellow flickr people and i knew some of them pretty well. but then i looked at the schedule for the tofu festival and one word changed my mind... cosplay. i've discovered that along with aviation photography, cosplay is one of my favorite things to photograph. so i headed to the tofu festival once again, albeit a little later in the day, with saad and his friend marcus and met up with my sister as well. i did split up with them as the cosplay contest was starting but they were nice enough to buy me different samples of the various offerings at the festival. in the mean time, i found myself a spot front dead center for the cosplay contest. i was slightly disappointed in the organization of it.... and maybe by how small it was... but then i just sort of shrugged it off and i had a pretty fun time watching and photographing the event. the highlight for me was the naruto skit that was funny and i was impressed with their costumes and poses. there was as usual some pretty attractive women cosplaying as well which i admit is one of the reasons i enjoy photographing this. the girl in this pic was particularly cute i thought. after this, we found a standing spot to watch the parade which would officially end the tofu festival... it was pretty cool, especially the part when the floats had parade princesses on them... haha! what can i say? i love taking pics of beautiful women! so despite my disappointment in the tofu festival from last year (no anime tent to seek shelter from the heat) i had fun at the other events. i'll be back here for sure next year! #68 of project 365

Koyasan Buddhist Temple in Little Tokyo

Koyasan Buddhist Temple in Little Tokyo
Made by The City Project
An active religious gathering place in Little Tokyo, the Buddhist temple serves as both community center and cultural ambassador. The Temple is a relic of the first days of Little Tokyo, and was left virtually untouched by the 1960s redevelopment of the area. Little Tokyo’s Aoyama Tree designated a monument The 60-foot tall Moreton Bay Fig symbolizes the founding of the Koyasan Buddhist Temple in downtown Los Angeles in 1920. By Joanna Lin, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer 12:50 PM PDT, July 17, 2008 Los Angeles designated Little Tokyo’s Aoyama Tree as a cultural-historic monument today. The 60-foot tall Moreton Bay Fig symbolizes the founding of the Koyasan Buddhist Temple downtown in 1920. The tree was planted in what Deanna Matsumoto of the Little Tokyo Historical Society called Little Tokyo’s formative years, an era of racial segregation when Japanese Americans labored on farms, shipyards and railroads. Day 45: I walked the Downtown Los Angeles area for a couple of hours today looking for my shot of the day. I wanted to take a shot of the fountains in front of the John Ferraro Building, but after walking over to it, I was dismayed to find a substantial construction project taking place where the fountains used to be. After wandering around some more and then finally finding my way over to Little Tokyo, I took pause from my walking to try some panning shots. I decided on this shot of an LAPD squad car as my shot of the day. It's SOOC except for minor cropping and tilting.

Jenn and I had a chance to head downtown and enjoy dinner in Little Tokyo. Luckily we took our camera's along and I had a chance to snap a few pictures. I grabbed this quick shot of city hall that I'm pretty stoked about. Hope you all enjoy it. Hopefully I can get back to shooting my favorite back yard, LA, sometime soon! Japanese Village Plaza, Little Tokyo, Downtown Los Angeles

Japanese Village Plaza, Little Tokyo, Downtown Los Angeles
Made by LA Wad
This is the main courtyard of the Japanese Village Plaza in Downtown Los Angeles' Little Tokyo. It is a pedestrian mall featuring mostly Japanese eateries, including downtown L.A.'s only conveyor belt sushi counter. Mikawaya, the bakery known for making Mochi ice cream, has its physical store in this plaza. For many years, Downtown L.A.'s only supermarket was also in this plaza. Mitsuwa Market is directly behind where this photo was taken. Downtown now has a well-known Ralphs Fresh Fare near South Park that opened last year.

A memorial stands in downtown Los Angeles' Little Tokyo section for the astronauts who died in the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster in 1986. The promenade of the Weller Court was named for one of the astronauts, Ellison Onizuka. His image and biography are on the base of the Challenger replica. The names of his fellow crew members are visible on the other plaque. The buildings seen in the background are the Kyoto Grand (formerly New Otani) Hotel, and behind it is the Thom Mayne-designed Caltrans headquarters building.

Los Angeles, 2007 I've really taken to Los Angeles's Little Tokyo neighborhood, immediately east of downtown proper. I had a craving for some vegetable tempura, so I stopped in at Suehiro Cafe on 1st Street, then walked across the street to the Japanese Village Shopping Mall, where I bought my Hello Kitty-loving boss a tape dispenser featuring the ubiquitous feline. And of course I brought along the Rebel and the lens I haven't removed since Ray let me borrow his: the 50mm f/1.8 II. It's so dreamy.

I met Miss Dobi at the Art in the Streets at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. She was enjoyed looking at a piece of art work and was dancing to the music when I approached her for this shot. Later, I learned that Miss Dobi is a copywriter who works with many well known musicians like Aerosmith, Annie Lennox, Barry Manilow, David Bowie... the list goes on... Raspberry Pomegranate

we just finished Daikokuya and it was hot and i didn't really eat much (all that compartmentalizing meant i was more conscious of what i was eating).....so time for some frozen yogurt. and little tokyo has at least 3 spots. while i do have a weakness for pinkberry, i had it early this week. so that was out. why not try ce fiore, which appears to be exactly like pinkberry? and sure enough, it was. and even as expensive. but the raspberry pomegranate was nice and tart and chilly on this effing hot day.

I ran into Wilson while strolling around the Japanese Village Plaza with my friend Becky. Wilson is a native Chicago but moved to Los Angeles few years ago after his neighbor stole his wife. Wilson told me that his daughter came to visit him on his 65th birthday last month. He told me that he's proud to see how his daughter became a successful business woman. I would buy you a drink if I have money, he said. I promised to visit him again next month... Second Street, Los Angeles, CA. July 22nd, 2011.

The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA recently opened an exhibit entitled Art in the Streets, and we finally got a chance to see it! The space was big and open, yet it was absolutely filled with art (both framed and unframed!). Starting with early graffiti, the exhibit explores when words on train cars became art and the controversies around that struggle. Of course, I loved Banksy's section, and Ryan enjoyed Shepard Fairey. We hope you go see for yourself this summer and let us know what you think!

Los Angeles, 2008 Met up with a few of the groovy folks from the L.A. Flickr Group for lunch in Little Tokyo, after which we adjourned for an extended photo walk. was challenging herself to ask strangers for their photos, and at one point we met three Japanese tourists in town for just three days (!!) before flying right back to Japan the next day. They were engaging guys, and happily posed for pictures. So of course I had to poach. :)

The monument honors the service of thousands of Japanese Americans to their country during WWII -- the same period of time that thousands of other Japanese Americans were interred in camps, notably Manzanar.

I'd never seen ramen served like this. And the menu said it was good for a hot day. This is definitely a hot day. So, I went for it. It is basically their house ramen with the ingredients separated. This allows control freaks like me pick and choose and assemble to taste. This should have been a perfect fit. But there really is no topping the daikoku ramen. Next time, no messing around.

We live in the Modern Age yet we still talk as if Galileo walked among us. Sunset refers to the purported movement of the celestial center of our galaxy, when actually Earthset would be more acurate.
