The Northern Flicker is a stiking woodpecker, with beautiful red-orange underwings (red-shafted subspecies), barred back and well-defined ventral spots. Often located by following its loud calls. The eastern and taiga Yellow-shafted race has yellow underwings and a red nape. The male yellow-shafted has a black mustachial stripe, rather than the red stripe as shown here.
