Adoramapix Photobook Review
Made by Richard.Fisher
I have just received my first photobook order from Adorama (www.adoramapix.com) and was so impressed I felt I should say so on Flickr, in case there is anyone out there looking for a recommendation on this site, as I was until recently. Previously I had a few photobooks put together by a UK company called Photobox. The first contained only photos taken with a Canon powershot point and shoot from the first half of the decade. The quality wasn't great, but I wasn't surprised as the source images were nothing special. But then I got a couple of books made using (predominately) images from a Nikon D80. I knew the images could look great because the c-type prints that hang from my wall - courtesy of The Print Space (www.theprintspace.co.uk) - came out incredibly. I had found a recommendation (in fact many recommendations) for that London based company here on Flickr. When I got around to making a baby book (lists of milestones and chronologically arranged family snaps) for my daughter, I looked around for recommendations and found too many to be useful. I decided to go with Adorama's print service partly as it was recommended on Ken Rockwell's website (www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm) - although I tend to disagree as frequently as agree with Ken's opinions - but mostly because they had a temporary half price deal. Now I don't have a vast wealth of experience of photobooks such that I can compare to other company's products (apart from the above mentioned Photobox whose image quality was far inferior), but what I can say was that the images were printed on thick paper which recalls proper photopaper, the images were similarly grainy to those of the prints on my wall (bearing in mind the prints on the wall are all larger than A4) and the colours matched my expectations (and my colour calibrated monitor). The books come in all the standard sizes you'd expect. I plumped for 12 by 8 (the largest size being 12 by 12). In contrast to some other companies, the books could only be 26 or 50 pages in length, and there was no option to add pages, which may be a bit limiting. Another drawback is that the pages have templates preloaded but it is not possible to select a different template for the page. I found that for every page I had to manually delete each item on the template, and then add text boxes and photos manually. Personally I prefer this, as I'm a control freak and like the idea of fully designing each page manually, however this takes a lot longer than would be the case if you could select a template for each page. Adding to the site a button to select a template for each page, or starting with a complete blank page would be a welcome improvement. I was lucky that I managed to get my whole order at half the price, but was impressed enough to almost certainly use Adorama again at the full price. Obviously exchange rates change and you are at the whim of the strength of the US dollar (these are made and shipped from New York I believe), but at current rates you'd be looking at around £55 for a 50 page 12 by 8 photobook including UPS delivery.

Metropolitan Police Service / MERCEDES SPRINTER 416CDI BOX VAN EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE DISPOSAL UNIT / 01 AGU / LX03 AHN
Made by thurrockdave
The MPS is unique in having full time permanent explosives officers and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) capability. Known prior to 2 October 2006 as the Explosives Office, the EOD unit’s primary role is to provide EOD support to the MPS 24 hours a day, 365 days a year covering the MPD and City of London area. EOD officers are tasked to attend scenes where there is a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED), and to the scenes of explosions in order to determine their cause. They are responsible for conventional munitions disposal, and also for responding to incidents involving suspected CBRN devices. The Explosives Office was formed in 1964 in response to the number of criminal incidents occurring within the Metropolitan Police District that involved explosives (such as safe-blowing). Explosives Officers employed were all ex Ammunition Technical Officers from the Royal Ordnance Corps. Their role was to respond to any incident involving the illegal use of Explosives in the MPD, and to use their expertise and experience to make safe the scene for follow up investigations. Their role was to change in the late sixties and the early seventies, when a number of Anarchist and Middle Eastern terrorist groups planted IEDs in London as part of their strategy.

Fujichrome Provia 100F Test Shot
Made by Richard.Fisher
Have just started experimenting with film. This is from my first roll of slide film, trying to see just how contrasty it is in the midday sun. I think it holds up pretty well. Also a nice test of the 24mm f/2.8D. The corner sharpness when stopped down to f11 is excellent, and I can't imagine the ludicrously expensive and ludicrously lengthily named 'Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED N RF Aspherical' would be noticeably sharper in these conditions. Nikon F80 with AF NIKKOR 24mm f/2.8D 1/180s at f/11 Scanned with a Plustek Optic Film 7600i scanner. Straight out of camera.

I knitted this in just over 1 week so that I could wear it on holiday... just goes to show that I CAN get something done if I put my mind to it ;) Mods: I shortened the length of the bust and waist sections to fit my shape plus I knitted a few more hip increases. All in all a fun and quick knit, love the shaping! More info at: www.annarella.co.uk/projects/cardis_and_sweaters/2/82/1/p...

I love this pattern. Knitted in the round on circulars and DPNs, it requires only a teeny tiny amount of seaming. I've added neck band as the neck kept curling at the back. Explore highest position: 457 on 10th May 2011. STILL can't get a decent shot of one of these Focus' from the front! To rub salt in the wound, an 11-plate one drove down my road last week. Now, if you know where I live you will be amazed as you rarely even see an Essex car here let alone one from off the 'manor'. I'm sure they are just teasing me.

Jersey Tiger Moth
Made by helenoftheways
All of a sudden, all these fairly rare Jersey Tiger Moths have appeared round my house! They only started to be seen in Britain last year - must be climate change. This one is on the outside of my window, so this is the underbelly you see! (The round reflection is the lens of my camera!) Topside to follow... : something flat against a window

Summer arrives in London

I consider using the Nikon 300mm f4 lens to be akin to cheating. Simply point this at whatever you want to look fabulous and press the shiny silver button on the camera. This was (apart from a crop) straight out of the camera. Despite my current flirtation with film, it's still digital I grab if I'm going to stroll around the garden.

..under the weeping willow tree. I'm always amused at how so many young couples use this tree for their trysts! I think they must be forbidden loves in some way, as they can control the path from both directions, and hide their faces accordingly. It would be so much simpler to meet on a park bench! :)

Jays Furniture

A well preserved painted sign (probably 1950's) in Clarendon Rise, Lewisham, south east London. The sign says you can have £40 worth of furniture for 4 shillings (20p) weekly , that would take 200 weeks to pay back! The Jays furniture showrooms at 8 Lee High Road closed down many years ago.

Pretty sure this was taken on Ilford 400 TX. I have it on advisement from Stewie_Griffin that the camera I used was an Olympus Trip. These were shot over a number of months and then the film sat indoors on a table in the kitchen undeveloped for an equal amount of time.
