On the beach lie three huge eight metre high columns that in 1680, fifteen hundred years after the Romans had brought them from northern Italy to Leptis Magna to use in the construction of the Hadrianic Baths, Frenchman Claude Lemer attempted to loot and return to Europe. The Frenchman's attempt at transporting these columns clearly lacked the Romans' own ingenuity and so ended in failure on the beach at Leptis Magna. Another two hundred slightly smaller Roman cipollino columns were looted by the French from the Severan Forum and used in the construction of the Palace of Versailles. In 1816 more of Leptis Magna’s treasures were shipped from Tripoli to Britain. Initially a proposal had been made to incorporate them into the portico of the British Museum, however this proposal came to nothing and they remained in storage at the Museum until the Prince Regent brought them to Virginia Water, Great Windsor Park in 1826. The arrangement of the columns, capitals and pediments was directed by the Royal Architect Sir Jeffry Wyatville. 'The Ruins' were fancifully arranged so as to suggest the remains of an ancient temple, known as 'The Temple of the Gods'. In contrast with Leptis Magna, ‘The Ruins’ were enclosed by fencing in the 1950s in order to protect the stonework and avoid any risk of injury to visitors. IMG_4850

Laconica, Hadrianic Baths, Leptis Magna, Libya. The Roman hypocaust system. Under the floor would be an empty space with brick or stone pillars at regular intervals to support the floor. A furnace would be lit at one end of the room and the heat from the fire would be able to circulate freely within the under-floor space, heating the floor above. There would be flues or channels within the walls that would carry the heat upwards and release it via vents into rooms on other storeys. IMG_4780

The Forum was created by Emperor L. Septimius Severus in 200 AD, was one of the most outstanding of the Empire. It measures around 300 by 200 metres and was surrounded by colonnades with arches springing directly from the column capitals with 70 carved figures of Gorgons. IMG_0425

These three enormous granite cipollino columns were looted from the Hadrianic Baths at the end of the 17th century by the French Consul. The columns were destined for reuse at the Palace at Versailles, but the beach is as far the French got with these. IMG_0455
