Here we see a Black-Headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) landing with panache on a pond in Bushy Park; a site which you may remember from my earlier Red Deer shot . You're probably asking, why is it called a Black-Headed Gull, when I can't see a black head? Well, during the winter it doesn't have one! The black head is only a feature of the summer plumage :) There are two other species which can be confused with the Black-Headed Gull in the UK; the Little Gull, and the Mediterranean Gull. So, how do you tell which is which? The Little Gull is the only one which has a black beak. The Mediterranean Gull has pure white wings, which the others don't. As you can see, this one has a red bill, and dark patches on the underwings, so it's a Black-Headed Gull. For more about Bushy Park, read here Tech: Canon EOS 400D, Canon EF 300mm ISO400 RAW converted with DPP. Cropped fairly heavily in Photoshop, and then sharpened. f8 @ 1/1000th.

This chap let me sneak right up close on the other side of the pond, however I don´t think I needed much stealth as kids and everyone were passing by and he didn´t really care much.

It was 30 C outside so the deer were helping themselves to some shade and water.
