One of the most interesting aspects of this house is contained between the wall studs. On both inside and outside walls, bricks were cemented between the studs for insulation and soundproofing. This may be commonplace for the period, but i've never seen it before. After the plaster and lathe began to crumble, so too followed the bricks. When restoration began before Katrina, they were piled all around the rooms like little cairns. Part of one can be seen in the background here. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

From the farthest corner of the lot, LeBeau House stands mutely on the remains of its once vast lands, retaining what small glory it can. In the Eighties, the entire yard here was fenced off from the street and used to park eighteen-wheelers and flatbed traillers. It's amazing grass grows here at all. The trailer to the right hasn't been lived in for quite some time as evidenced by the weeds reaching up to claim it. For more history on LeBeau House, read the set description. The Old Practice Room

The Old Practice Room

This was the practice room for Final Academy back in late 1984 and early 1985. Strangely enough it's also part of the house destroyed by fire in the late-eighties, almost as if the house was trying to purge us from its memory. Most of the damaged wood has been replaced but some still remains as evidenced by the charred studs. For those of you with the power to see into the past, from left to right, that's me, Hampton, Tom Oz, Skul and Ed. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

Looking over the Domino Sugar factory. This is pretty much the view we had from our practice room, though a bit higher. It always reminded us of the cover of Pink Floyds' Animals album. The trailers in the lot are for the Domino employees and there are considerably less of them than there were a year ago. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

From here, the damage to the shingles from Katrina is evident. Perhaps they should have left the original terra cotta tiles up there. (As a matter of fact, the tiles are still in two huge piles on the lawn so they may eventually be replaced.) The little Matchbox car at the top of the photo is my Chevy pick-up. The Gunsel Post

The Gunsel Post

On each side of the front and back doors are two closets from the casino days. Standing inside on platforms would be one or two guards with guns. The hole in the steel plate above the opening was where the gun barrel would be placed and the horizontal slit allowed the guards to see where to aim. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

Looking due west across Friscoville Avenue and the Mississippi River. The Crescent City and its Connection (the bridge) can be seen in the background. This view alone is worth the cost of the house. In the foreground is one of the four chimneys. (Technically, four of the twelve chimneys.) LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

Compared to the rest of the house, the fireplaces are incredibly small. However there is a fireplace in every room in the house except for the main hallways. Even the third floor, now one huge room with supports for the roof has fireplaces. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

Inside the gunsel post. This hole overlooks the outside at the front door. There's a small steel plate just under the barrel hole that has no function I can figure out. It may have been a peep hole at one time but it's now rusted shut. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

This is the back porch and the first view I ever had of this house way back in 1984. Technically, I believe this was originally the front porch, but times change, eh? LeBeau House, Arabi, LA Joined Explore - 06-28-2007 Highest point: 113 - 09-27-2007

Graceful Decay

An interesting view indeed. Part of the confusion stems from the missing wall between the window and the door. More confusion arises from the fact that inside doors were used to block off the window in the background. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

Apparently opened by Hurricane Katrina, the staircase cruelly dares me to climb it. I did my best to resist, but it called me 'chicken.' I had to, don't you see? Yes, this is behind the stupid plywood barricade. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

Loooking north-northwest over Arabi toward the Lower Ninth Ward. In the distance you can see the North Claiborne and Florida Avenue bridges spanning the Industrial Canal, as well as the Arabi Water Tower. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

In the Eighties, my band, Final Academy, used to practice upstairs on the second floor. The only way up is this outer staircase blocked off by an imposing, locked plywood structure. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

The roof was almost completely destroyed in the fire. New construction was done before Hurricane Katrina but the amount of light coming in from the eaves says there's still much to do. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

At the center of the third floor a ladder rises to the cupola. I figured if the house collapsed one more floor wasn't going to make much difference to me! LeBeau House, Arabi, LA

Up to the third floor, now an attic space. Newer wood and charred spots on the stairs and outer pillars show where fire damaged the house. LeBeau House, Arabi, LA
