Waiting for the train

Waiting for the train

Assignment: PCA 38 Transport Deadline:August 31st, 2008 Image Tag: pca38 From: plain spotter Mission: As soon as anyone walks out of their door they use some form of transport as a means of getting from A to B. It could be by car, bus, train, plane, boat (the list is endless). You mission is capture any mode of transport whether on it or off it, waiting for it or watching it. Remember, have fun! WIT I was quite relieved when I went back to the assignment brief and saw that it said waiting for it because this ended up being my pick from the shots I took for the assignment this week. This is South Station in Boston at 10:30pm. I was waiting for my daughter to return from a trip from NY on the bus and they were delayed for a couple of hours so I took a bunch of pictures in the city. I went to the end of the platform to take a shot of a train but the security guard told me no photography from there. So I settled down in the station and set my camera on the table and took a few candid shots from there. I did several of this group and this is the only one where they weren't all moving. I like the contrast between bustle and bored waiting here - there were trains leaving around them but they clearly had a while to wait. I used a levels layer and selectively darkened the brighter area at the back left and also around the high arches to draw attention to the people. The edge of the table left a blurred area in the bottom and so I had to crop fairly tight on the bottom. A very slight saturation increase but no adjustment to the color balance (left on auto). Shot at 1/60, F5.6 and 30mm with my standard 18-55 lens. I have an ongoing battle with my iMac screen - it is calibrated for color but my prints and flickr posts are darker than I intend. I am still fighting to figuring that out.

Click here to view large on dark background. The Kodak BW400CN is a consumer-grade black and white film designed specifically to be developed at 1-hour photo shops and box stores (C-41 process) even though the film is slyly labeled Professional. Nevertheless, unlike other faux black and white films made since the early 90's this has a brown base like other color films (rather than that weird purple) and it seems to be a bit more sensitive to push-processing. The grain comes out really nice with only a 1-stop push from 400 to 800 and the high contrast was more intense than I expected, but also quite classic looking for such an odd modern film stock. One of the things I like about shooting analog is that the physical nature of it sometimes gives you a road map. Knowing that I was shooting a stop down and processing for high contrast and grain helped me find the shots rather than just shooting and then finding a retouching trick that would work best way after the fact. Canon EOS II 35mm w/ 50mm 1.4f on Kodak BW400CN (C-41 Black & White) push-processed one stop (no retouching)

Chinatown Gate, Boston

Chinatown Gate, Boston
Made by Laurie Breton
Looking down Beach Street through the Chinatown Gate. That's my daughter, Jen, in the Celtics gear and sunglasses with the DSLR dangling from her hand. At the Chinese New Year celebration a few years back, we had dim sum in the restaurant behind her. I'd taken several nibbles of something before I realized I was eating chicken feet. OMG. I'm still trying to recover. The restaurant has since changed hands and reopened as a buffet. I'll probably try it one of these days, as long as they're not serving foot of chicken.

Interior of a building on Lincoln Street, in Boston's Leather District. This picture was taken by me somewhere around 1980. Leather goods & shoe wholesalers had actually occupied the building pretty much up until that time. The building was indeed renovated shortly after this picture was taken. Today, any actual 'leather' related businesses in Boston's 'Leather District' are a thing of the past. (I took this with my first medium format camera, a 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 Century Graphic using sheet film.)

Boston Industrial

Boston is a city of facets: it changes faster than any other city I frequent, and yet parts of it are frozen in their own bits of time. The original exposure here was a bit spare and unrelenting in the midday winter light; I prefer a duskier feel for the shot, so I've redressed it a little. I'm taking a long walk today around South Station, and I'm starting at South Station because I'm suddenly wondering if the South Street Diner is still in place. And it is! There is much rejoicing.

Story of a Pebble

The concentric-circle ripple pattern here is a natural artifact of some of the processing work on this image of One Lincoln Street in Boston's Financial District. As soon as I teased it out of the flying rows of windows, I liked it: I imagined throwing a stone onto the shimmering surface of the building, and watching the ripples spread out from it into the world around.

Bamboo garden in Chinatown Park, Boston. I thought how there was probably some bamboo and red painted metal somewhere in the Olympic Village, and it was just like being there. Also my first post to the CWD Audit pool. I wasn't looking for a class, just some place to post my silly reference to the Olympics, that were going on at the time. The class turned out intriguing though, and I stayed.

Splash Flash

Explored :) This is the fountain at the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston. It was very windy and the stray water made a cool bokeh effect in this shot. The red and blue was created by using two flashes, one with a red filter and one with a blue filter. They were fired at different times so the water would be in different places when each flash fired. Press L key to see on black.

You have to be of retirement age to remember when Which twin has the Toni? was an active advertising slogan. The twins in this shot are the One Financial Center building on the left and its reflection on the glass walls of South Station on the right.

I was trying to X-Process Kodak's replacement for Ektachrome and this is what I got. I told the sales person @ the camera store that this film wasn't the same as Ekta and he vehemently denied it. Well, what I got was not the desired effect but it seemed to work a little for this shot. I doubt I'll be Using that film again :^(

Amtrak Business Class

Amtrak Business Class

On the Northeast Corridor Amtrak, which makes stops at many points between Boston and Washington, DC. My trip would take me as far as Wilmington, DE. This is so much better than the coach seats or flying. Lots of leg room, a wall outlet, cafe car, ability to make calls or surf the web. I gave the new iPhone quite a work out.

Many times, folks (like this soul) look for help in very dangerous areas--in roads, near the exits and entrance ramps of major highways. Since his sign is probably too much in shadow, here is the poetry of it: Homeless / And 50¢ / My Please / Hungry / Can You Help / Now God Bless / Thank You

Utica Street

Utica Street

This looks like an alley, and it's questionable whether it's wide enough for one car, but it is an actual Boston city street with a street sign and everything. Even Google Maps knows it. I thought that little 5th floor walkway spanning above the alley street was pretty interesting.

This shot is surprisingly difficult to get because when the men play their mahjong here in Chinatown, they usually have a half dozen (or more) other gents packed around the players, watching every move. These men had not yet developed a fan base, so I could take their picture.
