Paris lion de Belfort

The Lion de Belfort, erected in the middle of Place Denfert-Rochereau in remembrance of the resistance of Belfort, a town in Nort-eastern France, in front of the advancing Prussian army in 1870. Nowdays, the Lion comes very handy at the end of a demonstration (many of them seem to converge on or start from Place Denfert-Rochereau). Demonstrators will climb on the statue and wave whichever sign they have been carrying. It makes for great and suitably dramatic pictures.
