Red Panda

Red Panda
Made by The_cheeseman
Red pandas are threatened by deforestation and other human activities. Deforestation eliminates nesting sites and sources of food, and isolates populations into small fragments separated by inhospitable habitats. Ailurus fulgens is the occasional target of game hunting, and it is often found in traps set for musk deer. Red pandas are also outcompeted by local livestock for food. Expanding human populations in Asia and the increasing need for land and lumber are significant threats to the survival of this species. Red pandas are protected and listed in Appendix II of the Convention on the International Trade in Threatened and Endangered Species, and were declared endangered in March 1988. (Glatston 1994, Roberts and Gittleman 1984)

Ailurus fulgens Endangered In the wild red pandas spend much of the daytime sleeping, foraging for food at dusk and dawn. Bamboo leaves are a staple in their diet and they have developed a specialized wrist bone that acts like a thumb. This allows them to grasp bamboo stalks. Red pandas are well adapted for climbing. A frightened or angry red panda will hiss like a cat. - from zoo sign en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Panda

Carousel

Carousel

Shot at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, to get some motion in the carousel I selected a slowish shutterspeed of around 1/2 second and braced myself as I shot this without tripod. The object itself wasn't all that interesting, so I took the shot with (this sort of) post-processing in mind. With the increased saturation it also kinda reminds me of a flying saucer, coming to take all the little kids away. It would make the zoo a quieter place. :p

Friday Falcon 1

There was a family of falcons flying around us but they usually flew out of sight for a while. Finally this fledgling landed on a dead tree close by. He still doesn't have good balance. The only thing was i was shooting towards the sun so he is shadowy. I tried correcting it but this was the best I could do. Notice that he is tagged. I was in Laurier Park.

"Quack," said the Goose

"Quack," said the Goose
Made by Mark Lagerweij
This goose and I had a little vis-a-vis in the Edmonton Valley Zoo and came to an understanding. He or she (gender undisclosed) would quack and I would take the shot. It took some patience, quite some time and some swearing at the model to get the 'quack' precisely right. If you look carefully I think you can see its tonsels.

I finally got this shot.

I finally got this shot.

I have been waiting a month for this shot. All those pine cone remnants have been there for that long. I guess he found a place where he could eat his cones. When I first saw him a month ago, I startled him and he bolted for the brush. Every time I went by since, I snuck up to see if he was there but he wasn't, until now.

(Funny, I didn't know pandas could be communists. bah dum dum) Taken at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. I didn't want to take the picture through the dirty glass, so I just held my camera over my head and snapped a few pics, hence the slight skew.

A little anniversary getaway to Edmonton. Not as impressive as the Calgary Zoo, but the Valley Zoo in Edmonton is a surprisingly peaceful, good time. He should try out for a Double Mint commercial: Double the Hump, Double Your Fun!

I don't know how he did this. When you take a digital photo, there is that micro time where the screen goes blank and then it shows you the shot. He either dropped it out of his mouth or mishandled it right after he grabbed it.

I sat at one end of the bench and started putting peanuts at the other end. Eventually I moved them closer and closer until, as you can see, he ate from my hand. He was naturally very nervous and took a while until he took it.

This guy was planning an escape. No matter where he was in the enclosure, he kept his eyes on the open door behind me. Edmonton Valley Zoo

This is where all three methods come together. The shadow on the left is from the bridge I was standing on. The reflection is higher up on the hillside out of view. The lines are how all three come together.

Took another after-hours photography trip to the Valley Zoo in Edmonton last night with a few other Flickrites... was a lot of fun as usual, and like last year the highlight was the Red Panda enclosure.
