Darkness at Lou Ruvo
Made by photomat-
Rolleiflex Automat Xenar 75mm f/3.5 Ilford XP2 400 Exposure: f/3.5, 1/8 Probably the most fascinating building in Las Vegas and it's not a casino. I deliberately scanned this underexposed with the dark areas and loss of details. A symbolic nod to what this building represents with it's architecture and the debilitating diseases of the brain that they fight there. [ blog: Bright Lights and Vegas Nights ] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Ruvo_Center_for_Brain_Health Keep Memory Alive (also known as KMA) was founded by Larry Ruvo, senior managing partner of Southern Wines and Spirits, in memory of his father, Lou Ruvo, a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease, together with his wife Camille, Mirage Resorts CEO Bobby Baldwin, who also lost his father to Alzheimer's Disease, and Bobby Baldwin's wife Donna. KMA supports the mission of the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and has held several star-studded galas, attended by celebrities and notables from around the world. It has become one of Las Vegas’ most important charity initiatives and a key participant in the nation fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $20 million towards achieving its goal – the realization of the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Funds committed by such supporters as the Spector Family Foundation, the Roland and Terri Sturm Foundation, Steinberg Diagnostics, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and America Online will be utilized for the construction and operation of this incredible state-of-the-art facility. The Center is planned to become a national resource for the most current research and scientific information for the treatment of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington 's Diseases, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) as well as focusing on prevention, early detection and education.

Stranger #47 Russian "Ice" Queen
Made by i5prof
This picture is #47 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100Strangers.com This is Valerie, she is a Russian ice skater performing at the Riviera in Vegas. I had to ask her what her name was at least 5 times because her accent was so thick, I heard only Melonie. It was the guy behind her handing out Vegas coupon booklets who set me straight on her name, it was clear, he had fallen love with her. I saw her from a distance, there were huge flags being held by the male skaters and the females were handing out fliers for $5.00 off their Ice Skating show. Hoards of people were passing by and she was in the middle of all of it. When she saw me snapping away at her, she began to pose. I swear she was 6'5' with her skates on. I got closer and closer and she began to animate her face - one minute sexy, the next, girlish or innocence. She had those earmuffs on and I could see the clouds coming off of them. I knew I had a find here. AND, I feel guilty about this, I told her I would go to see her show and meet her afterwards with my Flickr address. She wanted me to meet her because she said she would be wearing a different outfit. I really missed an opportunity here - and the worst part is that the other image I posted is presently at #70 on Explore. So, Valerie, I will call the Rivieria and see if they can track you down and I will send you these most amazing images.

sin city

Las Vegas (often abbreviated to Vegas) is the most populous city in the state of Nevada, United States, the seat of Clark County, and an internationally known vacation, shopping, entertainment, and gambling destination. It was established in 1905 and officially became a city in 1911. It is the largest U.S. city founded in the 20th century. The name Las Vegas is often applied to the unincorporated areas of Clark County that surround the city, especially the resort areas on and near the Las Vegas Strip. This 4½ mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard is mostly outside the Las Vegas city limits, in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. The center of gambling in the United States, Las Vegas is marketed as The Entertainment Capital of the World and is famous for its massive, lavish casino resorts. It is also commonly known as Sin City, due to the popularity of legalized gambling, availability of alcoholic beverages at any time (as is true throughout Nevada), and various forms and degrees of adult entertainment. The city's glamorous image has made it a popular setting for films and television programs. This photo will be will be used by Josh Rubenstein for his CBS 2 and KCAL 9 (Los Angeles, CA) weather reports.

Overpass
Made by photomat-
Bronica SQ-B Zenzanon 80mm 2.8 PS Kodak BW400CN Exposure: f/2.8 2s Continuing with some more black & white, this time with the Bronica. This was taken right before sunrise on the bridge over I-215 on Charleston Blvd looking east. This morning was one of those times I wish I had been using a color film or had my Canon with me. Oh well, can't win them all! Previously, I have been using the heal tool in Photoshop to clean up the dust spots etc. I have a new favorite tool after using the Lightroom spot removal tool :) This works so much better than the Photoshop version. For those that haven't used it, you click the spot and it places one circle over the spot and another for the spot you are cloning. You can change the size of either circle and the location by selecting them and dragging them around. Brilliance in simplicity! A technical question for anyone that can answer: What is with the uniform strip of overexposure down the left side? It extends all the way out to the edge of the negative. It was on a couple of other shots from the roll but not all. I believe these were towards the beginning of the roll. Check out my photo blog: Bright Lights and Vegas Nights.

Main Line Art
Made by photomat-
Hasselblad 500CM Zeiss 50mm f/4.0 Distagon Kodak Portra 400VC Exposure: f/11.0 1/500 Not the first roll from the Hasselblad, those went to a mail order lab and included my first two rolls of slide film ever. This was the first roll developed. I was expecting so shoot later in the day, as the light was fading hence the 400 ISO film. My plans changed so I ended running around Downtown Las Vegas quickly, shooting some Street Art, all at f/11.0, 1/500. The only positive I can find with shooting in this kind of harsh light was not having to mess with the shutter speed and aperture. Probably the fastest roll I ever shot! This one was taken next to the rail line in the arts district of downtown. There are some great walls in this area, painted by talented people legally. This quick throw up here, not so legal! On the Road to Toiyabe National Forest and Mount Charleston
Made by WestCoast_Eden
Mojave Desert Beauty From Wikipedia: The Mojave yucca (Yucca schidigera), also known as the Spanish Dagger, is a flowering plant in the family Agavaceae. It is native to the Mojave Desert and Sonoran Desert of southeastern California, Baja California, southern Nevada and western Arizona. The fibers of the leaves were used by Native Americans to make rope, sandals, and cloth. The flowers and fruit could be eaten and the black seeds were ground into a flour. The roots were used to make soap. Currently extracts from this plant are in animal feed and various herbal medications. Some reports claim that Native Americans washed their hair with yucca to fight dandruff and hair loss. Among the other maladies this yucca has been used to treat are headaches, bleeding, gonorrhea, arthritis and rheumatism. Also used as a natural deodorizer. Used in pet deodorizers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yucca_schidigera #298 in Explore on Feb. 4, 2008

Huntridge Diner
Made by Nick Leonard
Polaroid Sun 600 LMS camera, Polaroid 600 film (expired 2009) This is how the old diner looked back in the winter of 2009. Located inside the on the corner of Maryland Parkway and Charleston, I would assume it had been quite a staple to the pharmacy. It was decorated just how an older diner should look, perfect color scheme and delicious food. I came back sometime in the summer of 2010 to find the diner portion of the pharmacy closed and wouldn't open until another eatery of some kind bought it. Currently it's a hot dog spot and place that serves ice cream. A lot of the retro photo's of Elvis and Marilyn have been removed as well as the tables you see in this Polaroid. The stools at the counter remained as well as some tables built into the wall in the back of the diner. The hot dogs and hot dog shack theme are no where near as tasty or appealing as the diner once was! www.nickleonardphoto.com

The X-Scream
Made by Helen Beresford
Rising 1,149 feet into the Vegas sky (100+ floors up), the Stratosphere Tower is the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States and an exciting attraction among Vegas Strip hotels. On the top of the hotel are several extreme thrill rides, the one pictured above being the X-Scream. It's a giant teeter-totter, comprising of a 69ft straight piece of track, that propels you 27 feet over the edge of the Tower, 866 feet above the ground. After being shot over the edge, riders are dangled weightlessly above the Las Vegas Strip before being pulled back and propelled over the edge again for more. The rolling back and forth of the car and the rocking of the track is programmed to take the rider by surprise and feel like they are at risk of falling from the precipice of the building. And yes, I did, but back in 2008...and once was plenty! :) :) 100 Pictures #75 - Out of Place

Fast Food Gulch
Made by hbomb1947 the turnstile-jumper
Best viewed large and on black. Discarded signage from some of America's favourite roadside eateries finds repose in the Boneyard, a junkyard of old neon signs in Las Vegas. Public tours of the Boneyard are offered by the Neon Museum across the street. I took one of those tours. BTW, this photo came at a price. After I wandered away from the tour to photograph these fast food signs (which were tucked away in the back of the lot), I accidentally got locked in to the Boneyard. Luckily the Neon Museum folks hadn't wandered too far from the gate by the time I noticed that they were gone, and they quickly unlocked the gate and let me out. : ) Holy crap, this photo made Explore! # 159, on 3/30/09. More Boneyard pix are coming soon!

Day 14/365: Under the Sahara Dome
Made by Lisa Asil
If you haven't guessed by now, I'm in Vegas! For the time that I'm here, the challenge will be to create great pictures in an environment I can't control. I also had to come up with a creative way to upload my pictures. Verizon wants to charge $40 to tether & the Sahara wants $12.99 a night for internet. Yeah right! Like I'm paying either one of those. So I'm taking the pictures with my Nikon, adding them to the memory on my phone, & uploading to Flickr that way. Problem solved. While I'm here, I won't be able to get around to everyone's photostream in a timely manner but I promise to catch up when I return.

Holiday Motel, Las Vegas!!
Made by Digital Agent
Located on the famed Las Vegas Strip, this motel from another era still provides accommodations for those looking to save their $$ for the slots. I stopped in early one morning and spoke to the nice lady who was just opening for the day. She says you can stay there and park your car free for $175.00 a week, the rooms are clean and they have colored cable tv!! Now that sounds like a bargain considering our rooms further down the strip cost about that figure per night...:-)) Facebook

IA Summit 2007 Mind-Map
Made by Kaeru
Here's a mind-map I made on the flight back home. This is all from mind, only jogged by the program at a glance. Take note that I'm only mapping the concepts and themes I encountered in the talks I attended, so this is a highly subjective, by no means complete overview of what the summit had to offer. Why don't you make your own? Let me know when you do. Next step is to take these clustered concepts and write up some posts around 'em. Dark Overpass
Made by photomat-
Bronica SQ-B Zenzanon 80mm 2.8 PS Kodak BW400CN Exposure: f/2.8 4s From the first roll I shot with my Bronica SQ-B. Due to technical difficulties, this is the only shot I actually liked from this roll. Managed to miss the first two shots as I loaded the film and didn't wind it on far enough, oops. Then the last four shots I took with the dark slide still in a few days later. Big oops! West Charleston Blvd running over I-215 in Las Vegas. Taken on a cold and windy morning at around 5.45am. Shame I choose to load a black & white roll of film as the colors in the sky were quite nice.

Waiting
Made by photomat-
Yashica D Ektar 100 Exposure: f/4.0, 1/15 Often when I shoot, this is the scene behind me! My poor wife waiting around for me :) This is looking west at the Fremont Street Experience. No light show going on at the moment but you can see the canopy in the background. A lot of film shooters like Ektar 100 and a lot complain about its cold tones. To counter this, I removed a little of the blue cast in PS. Also, I pretty much messed this shot up by not metering correctly for incident light on the face. Lesson learned. Included a black & white version too.

The Flipside
Made by photomat-
A different view of the Las Vegas Strip, taken from the top of the south parking garage of the Las Vegas Premium Outlets. This is looking south at the I-15 at the exit for Charleston Blvd. I had planned on taking a few different shots of this view with different focal lengths. Alas, disaster struck after maybe 5 or so shots when my battery ran out! Lesson learned, be prepared :/ Will definitely revisit this shot with a wider angle to see how it turns out. For now, this is how it looks at 100mm. Worth a look Enjoy your Sunday!

Insanity Ride
Made by chrisshots
on top of Stratosphere Tower, Las Vegas, NV. Insanity Ride is a truly mind-bending experience! A massive mechanical arm extending out 64 feet over the edge of the at a height of over 900 feet, this Vegas ride spins its passengers in the open air at speeds of up to three 'G's. They get propelled up to an angle of 70 degrees, which tilts their bodies into one position — straight down! If they can keep their eyes open they get a breathtaking view of downtown Las Vegas. What do you think about this? Would you like to take a ride?

Ambassador East Motel

www.nickleonardphoto.com C L O S E D Thanks for the memories... Seeing the above sentence struck me somewhere. I think because I cheirsh memories a great deal. And vintage motel signs. I'd never seen a sign that read something like that after it has closed, so that was pretty cool as well. Oh, and the fact I had my Polaroid with me to shoot this- made it 100x better. :-) + The-Impossible-Project
