he walked straight out of pearl buck's 'the good earth' from 1931, (the book that made me want to go to china as an exchange student) and i met him on 'the first bridge in lanzhou'. the contrasts of china are amazing. they have the newest everything technology-wise, and they still have their old-old culture and traditions.

There was really nothing to do in Lanzhou other than have noodles that the area's known for. The city put out a pack of postcards filled with its drabby buildings and urbanscapes that was rather depressing.
