Pennsylvania Railroad
Made by kimberlyfaye
Pennsylvania Railroad truss over Bladensburg Road, NE in Washington DC. The Pennsylvania Railroad was an American railroad, founded in 1846. Commonly referred to as the Pennsy, the PRR was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The PRR was the largest railroad by traffic and revenue in the U.S. throughout the first two-thirds of the twentieth century and was at one time the largest publicly traded corporation in the world. At its peak, it controlled about 10,000 miles of rail line. During its history, the PRR merged with or had an interest in at least 800 other rail lines and companies. At one point the budget for the PRR was larger than that of the U.S. government; at its peak it employed about 250,000 workers. In 1968, the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with its rival, the New York Central Railroad, to form the Penn Central Transportation Company. The Interstate Commerce Commission required that the ailing New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad be added in 1969. The viable parts of the Penn Central system were transferred in 1976 to Conrail, which began earning a profit in 1981. The Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX Transportation split Conrail in approximately equal portions in 1999, with Norfolk Southern now owning most of the former Pennsylvania Railroad, including the old Pennsy Main Line across Pennsylvania. Sunrise Mizrach
Made by Carly & Art
Size: 9x12, not including tassels Stitch: chain, twisted chain, net stitch Materials: Linen, DMC perle cotton According to my blog, I started this piece somewhere around February 2008. The artwork was finished at least 6 months ago, but it sat in a drawer waiting for me to be motivated/inspired to do the finishing work. I'm a notorious procrastinator about doing finishing work. Usually it's fear related. I'm so afraid of making a mistake and ruining a piece that's taken months of work to complete. After all the worrying about the finishing work, I ended up just backing it with simple muslin. I didn't add any batting between the two pieces of fabric, which created a lovely natural airspace. It adds an additional level of dimension and texture to the piece. I'm also planning on keeping this one for myself instead of selling it or giving it as a gift. This piece represents a huge artistic break through for me, and I want to keep it as a reminder of a big spiritual/artistic turning point and the friend who inspired it. This piece was envisioned as a mizrach, an eastern wall marker and focal point for prayer. I leave it to you to decide if it should be on on the east wall as a sunrise or west wall as a sunset.

Phat Quarter Swap: Teen Angst
Made by Carly & Art
The fabulous phat quarter group did another swap and the theme this time was movies. The past couple of swaps I've stayed well within my comfort-zone, design wise. The themes still let me do work that was spiritually focused, and make something appropriate for the swap. Yes, I could have done something from The Ten Commandments or something, but Heathers was the first movie that popped into my head and so I went with it. Thankfully, my swap partner's favorite movies seemed to fit well with this choice. I searched for lots of images from the film and found one of the dream sequence with Veronica's (Winona Ryder) head sticking out of the grass and two croquet balls on either side of her. It was such a great image, I used it as the basis for the design. When I decided on the My teen-angst bullshit now has a body count, I switched out the balls used in the original photo for the ones that represent the two Heathers who die in the film. I painted the hoop blue, which is Veronica's color in the film. I also backed it with special fabric (other photo) that I thought worked well with the image. Of course, I just realized that I spelled angst wrong in the piece. Not only is the position of that word my least favorite thing in the execution, but there's a typo. D'oh!

Song of Songs #4
Made by Carly & Art
Size: Oval 9 W x 5 H Fabric: Empress Woo by Robyn Randolph (Free Spirit Fabrics) Floss: DMC Perle Cotton Floss, Variegated Silk Floss Stitches: back seed stitch, french knots, bullion stitch, satin stitch I love this fabric design, it reminds me of Song of Songs. It's all beauty, love and seduction. The message of this series is simple: Love, Sensuality, Senses, Beauty. In Song of Songs #4, the seduction of scent is the strongest theme. Here the lover gives the queen the gift of a scented rose, which is stitched in dimensional bullion stitches. Each piece in the Song of Songs collection starts with just the gorgeous Empress Woo fabric, which I don't think you can find any more. Then I draw a design on it and stitch. Each is unique and works as a stand-alone piece, but they are gorgeous when clustered together in groups. Song of Songs #4 is framed in an oval wooden embroidery hoop that has been painted glistening gold. It has a custom made hanger of cotton embroidery floss that match the overall colors of the piece. The piece is signed in ink with my cipher, a pomegranate and the Hebrew letter kuf.

"WHO hates short-shorts? <I> Hate short-shorts!"
Made by Carly & Art
This was, formerly, a pair of too-short and too tight, can't-wear-outside-the-house cut-offs of which Derby did not approve. Every time I left them on the floor, he would drag them under the bed, dig at them, and gnaw holes in them. I eventually just gave in and let him keep them. I pulled them out for the last time today; he has moved on to other items of denim (I believe that he and George Will may be in cahoots*). The hated shorts went, along with worn out winter pants and cutoff pants legs, to a recycling drive. They will be turned into insulation for, I believe, Habitat for Humanity houses in Louisiana. It's a good thing that Derby has no plans to relocate, otherwise couldn't you just see him in some modest cottage in Baton Rouge, kicking and gnawing holes in the walls to rip out the insulation? *see Demon Denim www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/15/...

Besamin Container: Altered Altoids 1
Made by Carly & Art
This is the first in my series of altered Altoids boxes. I've developed a bit of an addiction to the chocolate covered and sours, and decided I needed to do something with the boxes! The Altoids tin is covered with a hand embroidered cover featuring an original design. The artwork on the cover is intended to represent the scent of the spices swirling through the air. The stitches include running stitch in bright blue, white, pink, and green; french & colonial knots, sheaf stitch, seed stitches, and fly stitches. The edging was created using a heated modeling compound with which I cut an egg and dart border. The box is filled with my own blend of spices which includes bay leaves, rose hips, rose petals, cinnamon, cardamom, and citrus. The sweet and spicy scent is sure to return your soul to you after Shabbat! While my intent is for it to be used for the as a ritual spice box for the Jewish ritual of Havdalah -- it certainly can be used for keeping any treasures you like.

Shall I Compare thee to a Summer's day?
Made by Carly & Art
Inspired by today's Sunday Cinnamon on the DR blog www.disapprovingrabbits.com/2009/05/sunday-cinnamon_31.html Derby tries his hand at poetry Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day? Thou art more Dreary and thou disappoint Rough winds and thou turn the azure sky grey And Summer's lease thou cancel and evict: Naught upon you the eye of Heaven shines, And often, you display the worst of habits. Numerous failures after many tries, Earn sneers from a Disapproving Rabbit. But thy eternal Winter shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that pall thou ow'st, Nor shall fun brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st, So long as men can breathe, or hares can judge, So long......is that papaya? hop nudge nudge

New Moon: Wall Hanging
Made by Carly & Art
Size: 5 Diameter Fabric: Linen Floss: Pima cotton in Stick & Stones from Caron Collection Watercolours Stitches: Chain stitch, stem stitch New Moon is inspired by the cycles of the moon. When the first crescent appears the new month begins in Jewish tradition. This is the first piece of this theme I've done. New Moon is permanently framed in a wooden embroidery hoop that has been sanded and then finished with traditional shellac. It has a custom made hanger of silk embroidery floss that matches the color of the frame. The piece is signed in ink with my cipher, a pomegranate and the Hebrew letter kuf. Blogged Here

Steampunk Lab: Lightbulb on Sears Catalog
Made by Carly & Art
6 Diameter Fabric is simple muslin that I printed a page of an old Sears catalog on. I love the old catalog and thought it could be fun to play with on fabric. For some reason, I really loved the corset images. Steampunk is such a fun vibe that I've been wanting to find more ways to play with it through fiber. The wire-wrapped hoops are a definitely a big part of the right aesthetic for steampunk. I'm going to have to print a bunch more fabric! I decided to embroider an old fashioned light bulb on it. Shedding a little light on things? The whole thing is securely framed in a 6 wooden hoop that has been wrapped in copper wire. Listed in my Etsy shop if you're interested -- and more to come!

Chava Decides
Made by Carly & Art
Final Piece Blogged Here I decided to finish this piece as larger than 6x4, but I wanted to submit to the 6x4 challenge, since that's how it started out, so I scanned it now. The edges are unfinished, so I cropped it at the 6x4 marks. It's intended to represent the moment when Chava (Eve) decides whether or not to eat the forbidden fruit. The snake is not present, because the focus is on her decision. In my midrash Chava makes a choice, she is not tricked by the snake. She listens to the snake and then does something she's never done -- she makes a decision on her own -- thereby beginning history (herstory, if you like). Carly

Abundance Mojo Bag
Made by Carly & Art
Size: 2.5 x3.0 Materials: Linen, Cotton Floss, Vintage Cotton Floss, Metallic Floss, Linen Floss The second in my on-going series of tiny bags. This design based on an Art Nouveau book plate. I really liked the overall shape of this bag, it has more depth to it than the Valentine's Pouch. The cord is a braid of the metallic floss from the border and the vintage floss of the dress. It's perfect for herbs, crystals, cellphones, iPods, or other small objects -- or all on its own. The image makes it look a little duller than it is. I did the border in Chevron stitch,as it was the Take a Stitch Tuesday stitch of the week.

Portrait in Miniature
Made by Carly & Art
I focused in on these two people so it would look like a Renaissance miniature portrait. The finished piece will be framed in a oval frame. The actual piece is 3.5 X 4.75. The piece is done in DMC cotton floss and silk ribbon. I came up with the Embellished Toile technique about 5 years ago. Toile is a style of fabric that was developed in the 18th Century and traditionally portrays historical scenes or pastoral scenes in one color. Embellished Toile takes this fabric and adds details with a mix of appliquè, traditional, raised, and ribbon embroidery - but always leaves part of the original fabric showing.

WIP: The Colors of Life
Made by Carly & Art
This is a piece in progress inspired by my friend and sister Kohenet Yosefa Gypsy Jill Greenberg-Strouss. She passed a few months back. I began working on this the morning I learned of her death. The prayer of this piece is that I learn to live as inspired a life as she did. I hope to embrace color and patterns all that life has to offer. At this point this probably represents 20 hours of work. Here's a link to the first post I did about this piece.

Song of Songs: Cluster of Six
Made by Carly & Art
This cluster of Song of Songs pieces contains SoS #2-7. It's all beauty, love and seduction. The message of this series is simple: Love, Sensuality, Senses, Beauty. Each piece in the Song of Songs collection starts with just the gorgeous Empress Woo fabric, which I don't think you can find any more. Then I draw a design on it and stitch. Each is unique and works as a stand-alone piece, but they are gorgeous when clustered together in groups. The oval and the top and bottom rounds are already available in my Etsy store. The rest will be posted soon.

Trio of Woos: Woo 2
Made by Carly & Art
I bought a bunch of hoops from someone on Etsy and scored an oval one. These tend to be a bit more expensive, so I was glad to have one in the lot I bought. I think this is my favorite Woo to date. The embroidery really stands out on the darker background. I also decided to do a dimensional rose, which was fun and I like the effect. It's done with bullion stitches. I also was having a great time with this small batch verigated floss I bought. Happy to look up the name if someone is interested.

Musing 3
Made by Carly & Art
Hand embroidered on linen using DNC cotton perle and cotton floss. Vintage mother of pearl button in center. Stitches: french knot, colonial knot, whipped running stitch. Framed in 6 wooden hoop. This is part of a series of Musings. The design is drawn directly on the fabric with air disappearing ink and I just let the design evolve. There appear to be a few stray water erase marks that I need to clean off still. I'll post updated pics after I do that. I haven't framed Musing 2 yet.

Wimble-bun!
Made by Carly & Art
We've been trying to teach Derby to fetch a tennis ball. So far, he runs to ball, nudges it a bit, then runs back to us for a bit of banana chip. Now, given his recent foray into the yard I realized that he has the potential to be the first ball bun at Wimbledon! With that new retractable roof, he would have protection from hawks. He could keep the lawn trimmed and fertilized, all while being cute and/or disapproving. (Come to think of it, he'd make a great umpire, too)

W.I.P. Pomegranate Challah Cover: Detail
Made by Carly & Art
Almost done with this challah cover. The embroidery work is actually done, and I'm just down to the finishing work. I find that far less inspiring so I often stall there. The design is based on tambour stitch patterns, but tambour stitch is done with a special hook and this is done with a plain old needle. It's really just a chain stitch. It's stitched with DMC Pearl Cotton. Blogged

Henna inspired Hamsa
Made by Carly & Art
6 on unbleached muslin framed in hoop Stitches: back stitch, french knots, lazy-daisy, satin, outline Blogged Here First in a new series of Hamsas I'm working on. This one is already planned as a gift to a friend who collects hamsas. The design is inspired by the henna work of a good friend who is a henna artist. Also, this piece is the beginning of me using a new cipher to sign my work.
