Hong Kong (香港) - Lamma Island (南丫島) - Yung Shue Wan

Hong Kong (香港) - Lamma Island (南丫島) - Yung Shue Wan
Made by Michael Hansen's Hikes
Hong Kong’s third largest island, Lamma 南丫 (13.55 km2), is an eclectic melting-pot of arty culture and Chinese tradition. Due to its proximity to town, it is one of the most adored weekend getaways. Clean air, golden beaches, delicious seafood and fantastic hiking are the main draws. In fact, many city folk love the island so much that they have moved here in recent years, creating a thriving community of expatriates and commuting locals. Bicycles are the mode of transport as there are no cars. Skyscrapers are not to be seen as the buildings are all low-rise. Two of the most visited places on the island are the villages of Sok Kwu Wan and Yung Shue Wan. People come from all over the world to sample the seafood at Sok Kwu Wan's plethora of terraced restaurants raised on stilts above the bay. Fresh chilli crab, garlic prawns, deep-fried squid and steamed fish with ginger and spring onions are all firm favourites. Yung Shue Wan, which also has western-style restaurants and bars to enjoy, offers handicraft shops along its laid-back main street. The village also boasts a Tin Hau Temple built more than 100 years ago. Sun worshippers, meanwhile, head for the beaches of Hung Shing Yeh and Lo So Shing. Hong Kong (香港) - Lamma Island (南丫島) – Tung O Wan (東澳灣) – Rice Quern

Hong Kong (香港) - Lamma Island (南丫島) – Tung O Wan (東澳灣) – Rice Quern
Made by Hansen's Hikes
The Quern is a hand mill used for grinding grain. It consists of two circular stones, one on top of the other. Grain is admitted through the circular opening in the center of the top stone and turned with with a wooden handle being inserted into the slot on the side. The rotary-action hand-quern operated by a vertical stick spread from the Western Mediterranean, probably Spain, after 500 B.C. and introduced the basic method of rotating one stone over another, stationary, one that was universal until the 19th century – varied only in scale and by the motive power used. By 200 B.C. Romans were using a version powered by mules and had introduced a hopper on the upper stone to feed an even supply of grain. Hansen's Hikes visits Lamma Island on a number of our hikes. Hong Kong (香港) - Lamma Island (南丫島) - Mini Fire Truck
Made by Michael Hansen's Hikes
The Mini Fire Truck is a special fire appliance developed by Firexpress ApS in Denmark. It is built on Yamaha 4 x 4 Grizzly 600 all terrain vehicle (ATV). It is equipped with Firexpress fire fighting system and other equipment stowed onboard is primarily aimed for fire fighting operation. Firefighters on some of Hong Kong's outlying islands, like these on Lamma, use the Mini Fire Trucks as paths on the island are too narrow for regular sized vehicles. first blossom of spring

first blossom of spring
Made by Justin Gaurav Murgai
The start of spring is one of the most beautiful times of the year with the first blossoms just smiling through the cool breeze of a fading winter... I miss having a garden in Hong Kong... I remember being a child and stepping out and smiling at the first blossoms of Narcissus in our garden! Haha... Here's a cheery little rhyme! The Call of Spring by Norman Schlichter When spring begins Again to light Our happy world With colors bright. The robins all come Back to see How beautiful The earth will be. With crocus gold, And daffodils Lighting meadows, Fields, and hills; With leaves of green And tulips gay, And birds arriving Every day.

Lung Shan Pai, Hong Kong

Lung Shan Pai, Hong Kong
Made by AC Studio
A Hong Kong's Marine Department's repair ship sent a group of workers on this little rock called Lung Shan Pai (龍山排), in Lamma Strait, south of Api Lei Chau Island. The Hakka people called it Burnt Rock, because it is very dark in colour, looks like it has been burnt... Due to sea level rise, substantial area of this island begins to be covered by the sea during hide tide. Due to this reason, the department built a higher pier & a concrete access in the middle of the island 2 years ago, in order to get access to the lighthouse.

Nimitz Carrier Strike Group visited HK in Feb 2010. This is destroyer USS Pinckney (DDG-91). It is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. Base on my obervation, the US ships tend to come into HK one by one, with one hour gap in between each ships. Not long after the attack on one of their destroyer at Yemen, the group came in HK with special force on inflatable boat around every ships. In recent years the security is more relax, special force only be used for protection of aircraft-carrier.

Lamma Island

Lamma Island
Made by *kayin
Leica M3 SS + Summicron 50mm IV + CS5 Extended The hike on this island is awesome, takes about 3 hours from one end to the other, but well worth the time and effort, best time to go is probably during winter. This photograph was taken in July, where I met locals warning me of hiking at this time of the year. Indeed, during the few hours of some serious perspiration, I saw no more than a handful of hikers, one of them being my partner. Love it!

Located at # 58, Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island, HK. It's a 20 mins ride by ferry from #4 Pier in Central District. This was where I worked for more than 4 yrs ( 6 months with the previous owner and almost 4 years with the present management). It's the perfect spot and angle for viewing a good scenery and the sunset, while chilling out with your favourite drink. A simple keepsake for the management from me.
