The prettiness of Boeng Kak Lake does not betray the seediness and overall run-down nature of the Lakeside area in Phnom Penh. A typical backpacker zone, but I felt it lacked the charm of other ones I've been to while retaining too much of the sktechy locals offering drugs, bad tour deals, mediocre food and anything else one might want. We were also very, and fairly concerned our hotel was going to collapse into the lake while we slept. Our 2nd story room came complete with weak plywood floorboards, holes open to the floor below and a balcony very certainly off limits to human weight. But it was pretty cheap and we lived to tell the tail.

Hide and seek

A cute little girl trying to play hide-and-seek with me. After the game, she tried to beg some money for living. You can see tons of kids like her wandering on the main street of the biggest city of Cambodia. I guess the first word they learned was one dollar, and the first thing they know how to do is put their hands facing up, begging for money. I feel frustrated that I can do so little for them. At the other hand, i feel so guilty for not giving them some money, cause i think it will appeal more and more kids to come... taken in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

A ride on the lake

I already promised this boy to ride on his sampan on the sun set. He is very persistent to get me into his sampan ever since I sat on the deck at the guest house that I stayed. The picture is not sharp at all. The sampan was shaky and it was hard to take it without flash. Even more worst I sat at the second row and as friend of mine was sitting in front of me. Had to held the camera above my head. I wish that I have Nikon D80 with VR lens!! So me and a friend took a ride, paid him US$1.50 for the ride. It was worth it!

The Khmer Rouge were oddly meticulous about the people they executed. Tens of thousands were documented via a final snapshot which were then sorted by sex. A few years ago I bought a book of these images. While all are heartbreaking the two that are burned into my head are these: The image of a mother holding a tiny hand of a child who is off frame. The image of a child who, because he has no shirt, has his nametag pinned through his chest.

These tyre repair setups are on many street corners. Generally consisting of a compressor, a tyre repair kit and a hammock for the repairer to lounge in until a customer comes along. Not just for motos or bicycles. I saw a Lexus SUV having a tyre repaired at one of these places.

One of Phnom Penh's backpacker districts, known as Lakeside. Situated next to Beoung Kak, which is being filled in by a Korean company to be used for development. Thousands of extremely poor families that lived nearby are now homeless, and the lake is practically gone.

Two guys brave the remaining waters of Beoung Kak to salvage bits of timber that used to support houses out over the lake. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's new office (on the left) and the Council Of Ministers buildings loom in the background.

Petrol prices in Phnom Penh are nearly the same as in Australia (this shot shows a litre of Super costing AU$1.12). Consider that many people here have to live on less than US$1 a day.

I heard that this house, on the corner of Street 95 and Street 330, was where Kaing Guek Eav (aka Comrade Duch) lived during the time he headed the S-21 torture prison.

Old-school and new-school. I also noticed that the vast majority of cyclo drivers are seriously old guys, and the moto/tuktuk guys are young 'uns.

Yes, there are Hummers and Mercs in this poverty-stricken country. The nouveau riche Khmers do enjoy their conspicuous displays...

Sculptor in Street 178. I assumed that most of the Buddha & apsara statues and so forth were just cast from concrete. Not so.

A mobile phone SIM card seller. These tiny booths are as common in Cambodia as 7-Elevens are in Thailand.

They just finished their meals they begged for along the street...a bowl of rice and some vegetables.

Given the craziness of traffic in Phnom Penh, seeing this on the back of a van did give me a chuckle.
