Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam

View Large On Black Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the US states of Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was controversially named in honor of President Herbert Hoover. Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and the lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned over the dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule. Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, and is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 25 mi (40 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. Heavily travelled U.S. 93 ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened. (from Wikipedia)

Oh what a weekend! I was able to attend a flickr meet with a great group of people to las vegas. We headed out on friday for a weekend filled with fun. The weekend didn't start out the greatest for me as my gps lied to me and lead me all over the place to find the hat a restaurant that would serve as the meeting place. The funny thing is i have been to this locations quite a few times and i knew the gps had to be lying to me but i drudged on. I ended up finding the restaurant an hour later while everyone was there waiting for me. We headed out and actually made really good time into vegas. Since this was with a group of photographers it was going to be exciting and different then any other time i have visted sin city. we ended up getting into vegas around 12 and in typical fashion i didn't end up sleeping til 3amish just to be woke up at 5:45 to head out to the las vegas sign. The days were filled with fun activities and non stop picture taking. We visted so many places including the strip, the casinos, the neon graveyard and the hoover dam. I was especially excited to see the boneyard since i have never been and it's been like a mini dream of mine. It for sure didn't disappoint. Theres so much i could talk about this trip but who wants to read a page worth of recaps. All in all it was an amazing trip and well worth every penny. I was also quite lucky that jon (joits) allowed me to borrow his 12-24 tokina wide angle. without that lens i would of been stuck using the kit lens all weekend and not been able to get some of the shots i would of. Thanks to jason, soupy, andrew, mike, lauri, patti, and jon for a great weekend. Hopefully i was able to capture vegas and do it some justice.

Looking downriver, this shot was taken from the top of Hoover Dam. The Mike O'Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, also known as the Hoover Dam Bypass, was the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States, and incorporates the longest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere. Opened on October 19, 2010, the bridge provides a crossing of the Colorado River for U.S. Route 93, linking the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona 1,600 feet (490 m) downstream from the Hoover Dam. It is located approximately 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The bridge is the second-highest in the United States, behind Royal Gorge Bridge, at 840 feet (260 m) above the Colorado River. Built as part of the Hoover Dam Bypass Project, which successfully finished within budget at a cost of US$240 million, the bridge portion cost US$114 million. Mike O’Callaghan, a decorated Korean War veteran, was governor of Nevada from 1971–1979 and was the executive editor at the Las Vegas Sun newspaper for many years until his death on March 5, 2004. Pat Tillman was a football player for Arizona State University and the Arizona Cardinals who gave up his multi-million dollar career in the National Football League to enlist in the U.S. Army, and was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004. 95/365 5th April 2009 A long car journey today from Las Vegas to The Grand Canyon, South Rim. This is a distant shot of one of the arms of Lake Mead taken during a brief rest stop. I may have irritated my family on this day by complaining that the sky was too blue and there weren't any clouds. I should have been careful what I wished for... ;o) 'Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States. It is located on the Colorado River about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the states of Nevada and Arizona. Formed by water impounded by Hoover Dam, it extends 110 mi (180 km) behind the dam, holding approximately 28.5 million acre feet (35 km³) of water.' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Mead

As the Colorado River exits the Grand Canyon it enters the massive Lake Mead created by the Hoover Dam. Lake Mead is one of the most important water resources in the West. Created in the 1930s, it ensures a steady water supply for Arizona, Nevada, California, and northern Mexico by holding back the flow of the Colorado River behind the Hoover Dam. It is one of the largest water reservoirs in the world. When full, the lake contains roughly the same amount of water as would have otherwise flowed through the Colorado River over a two-year period. Please view in large size... Thank you for taking the time to visit and comment my work ... it is very much appreciated! If you don't mind I prefer comments instead of graphics/icons.....Thx.

Please view This photograph was taken on the Nevada side of the Hoover Dam, opposite to my previous photograph, which was taken on the bridge featured here, the Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. As was stated in my previous photograph's description, this memorial bridge that crosses the Colorado River is the second tallest in the United States at over 900ft. The bridge was built to increase the efficiency of traveling between Nevada and Arizona, as traffic used to have to drive over the actual Hoover Dam to go between those states. The Hoover Dam is now a dead end on the Arizona side, so only tourists can circle over the Dam, whereas traffic crosses the Memorial Bridge. Thank you for visiting my photostream!

Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States. It is located on the Colorado River about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the states of Nevada and Arizona. Formed by water impounded by the Hoover Dam, it extends 112 miles (180 km) behind the dam. With 8 to 10 million visitors a year, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area is one of the most popular parks in the United States. Visitors who come to Lake Mead, can engage in a wide variety of activities including boating, camping, hiking, swimming, water skiing, year-round fishing and other outdoor activities. While the current drought has effected some areas drastically, Lake Mead really has not changed that much. It has become even more interesting.

So this is the last of the Hoover Dam Set. I liked this one the most. It reminds me of the death star from Star Wars or something. Also capturing it was such a task. Imagine holding out a remote and with the other hand holding onto your tripod that extends your 5D Mark II out enough to capture this view. So odd.. and then AEB adds another dimension. I kept thinking I wonder how many folks dropped cameras down there I also kept thinking how stupid I was to be thinking that at that moment. Anyway... hope you like it... I enjoyed all your comments on the last two.. Thanks so much. As always you can follow me on twitter @ twitter.com/jasonaball or facebook as jason ball

Hoover Dam, also sometimes known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada. When completed in 1935, it was both the world's largest electric-power generating station and the world's largest concrete structure. This dam, located 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, is named after Herbert Hoover, who played an instrumental role in its construction, first as the Secretary of Commerce and then later as the President of the United States. Did you know, there's enough concrete in it to build a two lane highway from Los Angeles to New York? Unbelievable...

High Scaler at Hoover Dam

High Scaler at Hoover Dam

High Scaler sculpture by Steven Liguori at Hoover Dam near Las Vegas, Nevada. The man depicted on this monument is performing one of the most dangerous yet essential jobs in the construction of the (Boulder) Hoover Dam. Sitting in a bosun's chair, hundreds of feet in the air, his job was to set charges and clear the loose rock from the face of the canyon walls. This statue depicts Joe Kine, who performed the work of a high scaler at Boulder Dam, Glen Canyon Dam and other reclamation projects in the 1930's and 1940's. This monument is dedicated to all of the men who labored to build Hoover Dam. (From the plaque inscription)

US 93 highway bridge at Hoover Dam crossing the Nevada-Arizona state line. The highway bypass was opened in October 2010. The bridge spans nearly 2,000 feet accross the canyon 900 feet below and cost $240 million to build. You can walk the bridge for a spectacular view of Hoover Dam and power house. Best free show in Vegas! My minimal research indicates this is a bidge of many names. Depending on what website is searched the name is either Highway 93 Bypass Bridge, or Sugarloaf Mountain Bridge, or the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

Hoover Dam, the more interesting side in my opinion. They are nearly done as you can see with the bridge. I cannot wait to see it finished. Looks like a scene from Neverending Story the oracle for those of you who remember that movie. Its insane to see. I am experimenting with some different techniques now. I hope you like the result.
