Although it was raining most of the day, the United for Peace and Justice Anti-war rally at Lake Eola in Orlando, Florida, had a really good turnout. There were many speakers at the event, maybe too many, but the testimony given by Iraqi war veteran Clifton Hicks made it all worth it, as his accounts of what happened during his deployment in Iraq moved many to tears. As the march started, the skies opened up and a deluge of rain came down. The marchers moved through the streets undeterred, and at about a mile into the march, came upon a small group of pro-war protesters that call themselves the Gathering of Eagles. These self proclaimed “real Americans” yelled hateful phrases and gave the old middle finger salute to everyone as they walked by. This conflict was pretty much over before it started, because the ratio of anti-war protesters to pro-war protesters was so great. Lake Eola Park is a popular destination in downtown Orlando, Florida, with many people taking advantage of the beautiful surroundings to walk at lunch or the evenings. The sidewalk that circles the lake is .9 miles in length, making it easy for visitors to keep track of their walking or running distances. Other activities available to park visitors include renting swan-shaped paddle boats and electric gondola boats . Lake Eola will be adding electric swan boats in the future. Also you can feed the live swans and other birds inhabiting the park, see a concert or a play in the Walt Disney Amphitheater, grabbing a bite to eat at Relax Grill on Lake Eola or relaxing amid beautiful flower beds and a spectacular view of Orlando's skyline. Trumpeter Swan The largest of North American waterfowl, the Trumpeter Swan is resident throughout much of its range, but migratory in other parts. Its was reduced to near extinction by the early 20th century, but it is relatively common today. Cool Facts * The Trumpeter Swan was hunted for its feathers throughout the 1600s - 1800s, causing a tremendous decline in its numbers. Its largest flight feathers made what were considered to be the best quality quill pens. * Swans can live a long time. Wild Trumpeter Swans have been known to live longer than 24 years, and one captive individual lived to be 32. * Trumpeter Swans form pair bonds when they are three or four years old. The pair stays together throughout the year, moving together in migratory populations. Trumpeters are assumed to mate for life, but some individuals do switch mates over their lifetimes. Some males that lost their mates did not mate again. Needs to be viewed LARGE or ORIGINAL if you have time... thanks.... Click on image to view on black...

Orlando Skyline Panorama Downtown

Orlando Skyline Panorama Downtown
Made by planetoftheweb
Downtown Orlando skyline panoramic view at night from Lake Eola. Three really long exposures using my Sigma 10-20mm lens. Merged using Photoshop's excellent Photo Merge options. When shooting a panorama, try to level your tripod, set the exposure, white balance and focus to manual to prevent differences between the shots. Overlap about 30% of your shots. Just don't set the white balance to auto, because as you move your camera to take the multiple shots, it may adjust slightly. If you shoot raw it doesn't matter once you set it to a non-auto mode. Since these were RAW captures, I imported them individually into Photoshop, did all the corrections first (edited out rogue water fowl, bad overlapping pixels, etc), exported each shot as a JPG, then used the Photo merge feature. When you bring in the shots into Photoshop, in the RAW control adjust one of the shots and then use the synchronize button to make the others match. For this night shot, a little bit after sundown works really well, you'll get the lights turned on in the buildings as well as some color in the sky. City of Magic

City of Magic
Made by MikeyD!
This weekend I went to Orlando. While there Katie and I did some light painting before driving to Cape Canaveral. We left Disney and got dinner before a lightning storm took over the city. It died off on the way there but it was still a little rainy. I went to two parking garages but couldnt get in without a badge. So scratch that idea of getting a different angle of the city. I knew about the Eola Lake park before going and used it as a last resort. Turns out theres a lot of ducks, geese and swans there. We found our spot under some trees to help with the rain but I still put a bag over my camera. This picture is by far the best of the night. Took about 30 pictures this night and we were having the hardest time with this word. For some reason we just couldnt write Orlando like a normal person. Kept messing up the AND. We got to the point where we said last one. One thing I wish I got was the fountain shooting water out the middle. Im still happy with this one. Some lightning in the back would have been better. Next destination: Saint Augistine.

blue hour sets over downtown Orlando, Florida...this scene was captured during our vacation in Florida last fall season...i was inspired to seek this lake out after i saw pictures of this scene along the halls of Orlando Airport when we arrived...after a little bit of research and a little help from GARMIN, me and Delight found Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando just as the sun was starting to set...the lake looked awesome with the city beautifully reflecting on it's surface...we stuck around the area for about an hour and a half so i could capture sunset, blue hour and night shot images of this beautiful scene...overall, i was pretty satisfied with the shots i got that night and was very thankful that i saw those pictures in the airport in the first place which led me to this shots...pls.

Lake Eola in Orlando, FL, about 15 minutes after sunset. The glowing yellowness below the condo on the left is a parking garage. The blue clamshell-looking thing in the lake is Walt Disney Amphitheatre at Lake Eola. Taken with 3 exposures, combined into an HDR image in Photoshop, tone mapped with Photomatix. This is one of my favorite photos of Orlando. I think it captures what it's like to be in Central Florida on a summer evening: it has probably just rained, it's probably still quite warm, and there is an orange glow with blue tones foretelling the impending darkness.

Orlando Nighttime Skyline

Better Viewed on Black I didn't originally come out here to do this but I had a opportunity to improve upon a previous of the Orlando skyline I took last year. This is looking across Lake Eola I took this just before what was left of the day's light was gone completely. Also this is a 3 shot panorama that's making it longer than my usual 6 x 4 orientation which makes this pic a little smaller here, but in reality this pic is really huge in both screen and file size.

A shot of a squirrel at Lake Eola, while testing out my new Canon Extender 1.4x II. Theoretically, this teleconverter hits its peak performance at f/8 (at least when used with the 70-200mm f/2.8L), where it actually very slightly exceeds the resolution of Canon's EF 300mm f/4L (at f/4 and f/8), according to the tests run at www.photozone.de. But even though this photo was shot at f/5.6, it's obvious that the resolution is still VERY good, although not quite perfect.

Swan Couple at Lake Eola

I love to walk around Orlando's Lake Eola, especially on Sunday afternoons. There are always a lot of different people — walking their dogs, playing with their children, picnicking, or just enjoying each other and the beautiful weather. The Lake is also known for its world-class collection of swans. One afternoon, I captured these two swans in almost the classic heart-shaped formation. I really liked the one taller/one shorter look because it reflects almost a protective stance.

Taking a break from the Hawaii posts to show you our new place of residence. Orlando is surprisingly smaller than Portland and has much less traffic...although I am sure the multiple toll-charging expressways have a lot to do with that. It's taking us some time to get used to the heat and humidity, but the near-daily afternoon thunderstorms keep things cooler some of the time. I have a few lightning shots to post later. We are enjoying our new home!

View On Black This was an old HDR I took back on May 7, 2009. I wanted to hit it with some newer techniques I have been using with HDR photos such as Topaz Adjust, which really brought out the colors using the Mid-Color Boost filter. Taken with a Nikon D90 at Lake Eola Park in Downtown Orlando.

I had the chance to get out last night with a group of Orlando photographers with the stated goal of twilight shooting around Lake Eola in downtown Orlando. Most people think the Orlando skyline consists of castles and roller coasters made to look like mountains. Well, it's not as spectacular as so many other cities around the world, but it's not so bad either.

Happy 4th of July to everyone! (it's still 11:53pm of the 4th here) Just came back to download the pictures into the computer. Taken earlier today. The fireworks went on from 9:30-10:00pm. I was stuck in traffic for about an hour. What a way to end an exhausting but productive long weekend. Got lots of pics to post. Will take time to sort through 'em all.

A Lonely Gull in B&W

A Lonely Gull in B&W
Made by Mike Wacht Photography
Story behind this one: the morning before I shot this, I was shooting inside my church and had the white balance on tungsten lights. I forgot to change it, so when I shot this, it came out very blue. It's one of the best gull shots I've managed to get, and I didn't want to lose it, so it became B&W with a little grain to make it look a little rougher.

View On Black . Self explanatory, Lake Eola in Orlando Florida. I dont feel the images are the best quality in the world due to the Lens i was using. One of the cheap 75-240mm Nikkor lenses. However it is what it is, leave some love if you like it, leave some hate if you dont haha.

This is a print scan of a photo that I took maybe 8 or 9 years ago. It would now be impossible to recreate, since condos have been built directly in the path of this building. It's too bad, since it's not nearly as pretty now. Oh, and another reason you could never recreate this photo -- it's no longer a NationsBank. It's a Bank of America. :-)

This image was taken at Lake Eola Park in Orlando, Florida. This mother duck was standing guard over her babies and if you look close you will see an unhatched egg. I can tell you that you don't want to get to close as this mother will attack and bit. Needs to be viewed LARGE or ORIGINAL if you have time... thanks....
