This is an old shot, but one I've been meaning to post for the past few days. I didn't get a chance to try to get to any waterfalls this weekend. I spent the weekend with family in Charleston, thinking I could maybe sneak out early and try to find some sort of waterfall running wild after all the flooding the state saw a few days ago. Never got a chance, though it was too sunny really for good waterfall pictures. This was taken at Lake Catherine State Park, which is just south of Hot Springs, Arkansas. I took this after looking around at the base of the falls and went up top of the hill for a look. The sun decided to come out, but luckily the falls were still in shadow. The sun was hitting this rock, so I took a few pictures with the afternoon sun beaming onto it...

The water of Falls Creek is quite shallow as it flows out from the falls - just a few inches deep at most places. But I made the mistake of not wearing my ratty shoes that were still covered in mud from my Twin Falls trips, instead wearing some new shoes that I didn't want to get wet. Luckily, there are lots of rocks in the creek that you can stand on, and I perched on one of those here, with the tripod standing in the water. It would have probably looked a bit odd if someone hiked up to the falls. Luckily I kept my balance and didn't fall in. Falls Creek Falls, Lake Catherine State Park, Arkansas.

Falls Creek Falls, a 12-foot waterfall at Lake Catherine State Park in Arkansas. I like these falls, though they aren't all that tall. But they are very easy to get to - just under an hour drive southwest of Little Rock, and are along a level and short hike. There is even a dandy swinging bridge that you cross on the way there, where you can pretend to be Indiana Jones for a bit.

Falls Creek Falls, a 12-foot waterfall at Lake Catherine State Park in Arkansas. The falls are on Falls Creek, which tumbles over these rocks and then enters a cove and flows into Lake Catherine. The falls are along a nice and level hike, and are less than a mile from where you park the car. Lake Catherine is about an hour southwest drive of Little Rock.

The two large rocks that overlook Falls Creek Falls, at Lake Catherine State Park in Arkansas... The snow had all melted by the time I started out, but it was mostly cloudy and not that cold when I got to the park. There hardly wasn't anyone else on the trails, just saw 4 other people during the course of the day. The campgrounds looked busy, though.

Lake Catherine State Park near Hot Springs. I hopped onto a rock in the middle and aimed upstream to get this shot. I like the way the trees lean inward toward the creek to make a nice arch overhead. This was taken just upstream from the falls about a week after a very heavy rain. Usually this creek has a lot less water in it.

Beware! If you travel to an Arkansas State Park, do not litter or start a forest fire (only you can prevent them!), because apparently the state has hired eagles that shoot lasers out of their eyes to stop you. You have been warned. This was taken at Lake Catherine State Park, which is about 55 miles south of Little Rock.

I found this guy trail side at Lake Catherine state park yesterday. He was just laying there in the sun and when I walked past he ran away. I snapped a few pics and left him alone. According to my field guide it seems to be a Northern Black Racer Coluber Constrictor Constrictor

This three exposure fusion was taken in the rain at Lake Catherine State Park. Morgan was kind enough to help me keep my camera and phone dry. Ironically, it didn't rain until we got to the waterfall and then immediately stopped when we got back to the car.

You have to love the deer in the state parks. They're not very afraid of people. These 4 let me close enough to get these photos and to stay with them for nearly 10 minutes. I still had to use the digital zoom so there's lots of sensor noise
