Lake Biwa

Interesting places in Lake Biwa:
竹生島

Lake Biwa (, Biwa-ko^?), formerly known as Omi Lake, is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, located in Shiga Prefecture (west-central Honshu), northeast of the former capital city of Kyoto. Because of its proximity to the ancient capital, references to Lake Biwa appear frequently in Japanese literature, particularly in poetry and in historical accounts of battles.

竹生島神社/都久夫須麻神社から琵琶湖を望む。 二個三百円の素焼きの小皿を買い、鳥居をくぐる様にと投げたけれど、どちらも届きませんでした。ああ〜。 View from Chikubu Shrine. Chikubujima is a sacred island in Lake Biwa, which has three main places of worship, a shrine and two temples. One of the temples is dedicated to the worship of Kannon, and is the 30th of the 33 temples on the Saikoku Sanjusansho (33 temple)Pilgrimage. With 300yen, you can get two small unglazed plates. If you successfully throw the plates through the torii, your wish will come true wether you believe it or not. I missed both! Can you see many broken plates on the ground around the torii? Those are not pebbles but the plates.
