O the Wond'rous Cross

Overlooking the active crater, the cross monument is there for two reasons. Originally the Spanish who settled this area thought that this volcano was the mouth to Hell. To sanctify this land, they built a cross. More recently the cross was added onto as a monument to the people killed by Samoza. Samoza would fly over the volcano in a helicopter and drop people into the crater.

This amazing mural depicts Nicaragua. In it, you can see various Nica farmland, along with some iconic mountains and the volcano, all surrounding Lake Nicaragua. I suggest viewing this in one of the larger sizes
