Overlooking the active crater, the cross monument is there for two reasons. Originally the Spanish who settled this area thought that this volcano was the mouth to Hell. To sanctify this land, they built a cross. More recently the cross was added onto as a monument to the people killed by Samoza. Samoza would fly over the volcano in a helicopter and drop people into the crater.
