La Plata is the capital city of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as of the partido of La Plata. The city was planned to serve as the capital of the province after the city of Buenos Aires was declared as the federal district in 1880. Per the 2001 census INDEC, the city proper has a population of 574,369 and its , the city proper has a population of 574,369 and its metropolitan area has 694,253 inhabitants.

It covers an area of 940.38 km2 and it's at 9,87 mts. above the sea level.

Its weather is mild, with an annual average temperature of 16.3C and an average rainfall of 1023 mm per year. The average humidity is of 77.6% and the predominant southeast winds blow during four months in the year.

La Plata fue concebida y diseñada sobre un gran eje central enmarcado por las avenidas 51 y 53, vértebra de la ciudad a través de todo el casco urbano, sobre la que se asientan los principales edificios públicos y plazas: la Catedral, la Municipalidad, la Plaza Moreno, el Teatro Argentino, la Legislatura provincial y la Gobernación, sobre Plaza San Martín. Su diseño urbanístico fue obra de Pedro Benoit y un prestigioso equipo, y es el sello que la ha distinguido en el mundo. Su casco fundamental es un cuadrado perfecto, cortado por diagonales y salpicado por plazas y parques cada seis cuadras, con anchos boulevares arbolados y un inmenso bosque a metros del microcentro.
