Stranger No. 22/100 - Wolfgang
Made by evansrobinson
This picture is #22 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100strangers.com/. After photographing Ms. Zhao, we worked our way to the top of the Tower of Buddhist Incense. The weather couldn't have been nicer that day, but we took a short break out of the sun. As the rest of my friends started making their way down, I spotted Wolfgang and his highly reflective glasses. Obviously another foreigner, I went over and asked if he spoke English. He shook his head, but called his son over to translate. It's somewhat ironic that I had a friend to help me translate English to Chinese and yet I had found a stranger in China that required an English to German translator instead! No photos were allowed inside near the statue of Buddha, so I explained that I wanted to take his photo and asked if he would mind coming outside. He agreed quite readily, happy to have his photo taken and followed me out. Afterwards, I explained the essence of the project and mentioned that his sunglasses had initially caught my eye. His son pointed out that people usually approach him because of his mustache. No surprise there! Another stranger photographed, I went off to find my friends, only to realize that I had completely blown out the background and that the photo was unusable. Some 90 minutes later--another stranger--and on the opposite side of the Summer Palace, we ran into Wolfgang again! Not wanting to miss my opportunity at redemption, I explained how I had fudged the earlier shot and that I wanted to take another crack at it. He happily agreed. Again. Afterwards, I carefully scrutinised the photo and showed him on my camera. Wolfgang liked the results, so I asked him if I could send him a copy. Before getting some contact information, his son insisted on taking a photo of me photographing his father. I'm sure it will make a memorable story for them to tell, complete with the stranger portrait to prove it!

The Long Corridor, Summer Palace, Beijing

The Long Corridor, Summer Palace, Beijing
Made by Jesse Varner
The Long Corridor (Chinese: 长廊; pinyin: Cháng Láng) is a covered walkway in the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. First erected in the middle of the 18th century, it is famous for its length (728 meters) in conjunction with its rich painted decoration (more than 14,000 paintings). The painting visible in this photo is entitled The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. It shows seven passionate literati of the 3rd century, known as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. The scholars, Ruan Ji, Ji Kang, Ruan Xian, Shan Tao, Xiang Xiu, Wang Rong and Liu Ling, held progressive political views but were unable to realize their ambitions. As a reaction, they refused to seek fame and wealth and took to entertaining themselves in a bamboo wood with composing poetry, food, music, and chess play instead. Summer Palace 颐和园 #3 [Beijing, China]

Summer Palace 颐和园 #3 [Beijing, China]

It's my last week in China before I go back to England to start my PhD, so I decided to get off my arse and do something. Today I went to the Summer Palace and learned something about flares: they are kind of awesome. Summer Palace (颐和园) is a gigantic and magnificent garden. In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List. It declared the Summer Palace a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design. The natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with artificial features such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges to form a harmonious ensemble of outstanding aesthetic value. It is a popular tourist destination but also serves as a recreational park. ~Wiki

The Tower of Buddhist Incense (万寿山), Summer Palace, Beijing China. (via Sino hotel guide :) In 1153, the Emperor of the Jin Dynasty Wan Yanliang built a temporary palace here called the Garden of Golden Waters as his summer resort. In 1888, the Empress Dowager Ci'xi decided to spend the money originally earmarked for the Chinese Navy and rebuilt the garden, she herself gave it its present name of Yi He Yuan (Garden of Cultivated Harmony), and the Chinese inscription of the name was written in Emperor Guangxu's handwriting.

I'm back from Beijing and have most of my photos sorted out. My book is finally finished and being printed as I write this. Things are finally coming together. Only 3 weeks till Canada. This photo was taken at the Summer Palace. I almost skipped this tour completely due to the fact that it takes such a long time to see everything. I'm glad that I went though as it made for an awesome day. This statue was in one of the courtyards. While in Beijing I fell back in love with traditional Chinese architecture. I'm sure that some of the photos will reflect that. More to come. www.thenez.com

Looking across the main lake at the front of the summer palace. Not many people taking the opportunity of a punt on the lake. The emporeress Dowager Tsu Xi built this as her summer getaway. The sign boards say that apparantly she (or her Mandarins) cancelled a large part of the order for Chinese naval vessels in order to build it which didn't help chinas defeat in the opium wars. She used to watch naval manouvers practised in rowing boats on the lake. It all seems like a tall story to me. More like greed and incompetance in the high echelons of goverment is the more likely story. Summer Palace Beijing China

As we were leaving the gardens of the Summer Palace (on the northwestern outskirts of Beijing) I spotted these bicycles through a doorway. We were still within the Summer Palace grounds, so I'm not sure who these belonged to, but it was such a typical Beijing scene that I had to capture it. While cars are becoming more and more common, bicycles are still the mode of transportation of choice for much of Beijing's population. Cars, bikes, and motorcycles all share the road (and, at times, sidewalks), which makes for some white-knuckle moments on drives through the city.

The last day before my heading to the other side of this planet for school, my mom and I again came to this stunning park. It was so difficult to leave. I spent a large part of my childhood in this peaceful park. Each time I went there I felt something new, but I would always remind of the carefree youth time, with my parents, my grandmom and my fellows, some of whom have been missing for many years. Each time I looked at the mountains far away, as if seeing my lost youth hiding among them, giving off a scent of sweet and a little bitter.

Seventeen-Arch Bridge at the Summer Palace, Beijing China. The 17-Arch Bridge, the biggest bridge in the Summer Palace, is 150m (492 ft) long, 8m (26 ft) wide. The 17-Arch Bridge was built during the Qianlong Reign (1736-1795) of the Qing Dynasty. From either side to the central arch, you get nine arches, and nine is the supreme number for the empress. It was built after the design of Marco Polo Bridge, which is 15km (9.3 miles) to the southwest of Beijing. It contains 544 white marble balustrades topped with carved lions.

Frozen Kunming Lake is the central lake on the grounds of the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. Together with the Longevity Hill, Kunming Lake forms the key landscape features of the Summer Palace gardens. With an area of 2.2 square kilometers (0.85 sq mi), Kunming Lake covers approximately three quarters of the Summer Palace grounds. It is fairly shallow with an average depth of only 1.5 meters (4.9 ft). Since the lake develops a solid ice cover in winter, it is used for ice skating.

The Summer Palace in Beijing is actually a very large imperial garden (so I was told by the guide). You can't swim in the water but you can paddle around for the whole day and enjoy the atmosphere. The buildings on the right are the largest in the imperial garden. I stayed away from the paddle boats and took a ferry to the other side of the large lake. I'm glad I did. www.thenez.com

It's my last week in China before I go back to England to start my PhD, so I decided to get off my arse and do something. Today I went to the Summer Palace. The weather was great - not too hot during the day (which def helped as I walked non-stop for 6 hours), and very clear skies that allowed me to take some pretty flare shots and ones of the setting sun.

Beijing, 2010 The sun didn't penetrate Beijing's thick layer of fog/smog until my third full day in the city. It made a brief appearance as a faint orb in the gray-brown-yellow sky and is reflected here in the waters of Kunming Lake at Summer Palace.
