- The Rynek Glowny (Main Marketplace) - one of the biggest mediaeval squares in the world is at the heart of the Old City, currently being repaved and beautified, full of churches, restaurants and bars
- - ancient seat of the Polish kings and now a major museum
- - the former Jewish district south of Wawel. More than 40,000 Jewish residents of Krakow and surrounding areas died in the Holocaust. Now there are very few Jewish residents of Krakow, but synagogues and other signs of Jewish culture remain in Kazimierz which was the scene of many of the events in
Museums and Galleries
Many of Krakow's state museums have free admission on Sunday and are closed on Monday.
- Czartoryski Museum, a former town house of one of Poland's great families, and proud owner of the famous da Vinci portrait,
- Bunker of Modern Art (Bunkier Sztuki Wspolczesnej), gallery of contemporary art very near city center. There is also book shop and nice cafe in the "bunker".
- Centre of Japanese Art & Technology (Manggha-Centrum Sztuki I Techniki Japonskiej). Houses the National Museum's Japanese artifacts, consisting mostly of the fabulous 6,500-item collection of local legend Feliks Jasienski (1861-1929) who adored Japan. It is located across the river from Wawel castle.
- Krakow has many other museums and galleries spread around Old City like Archaeological Museum or Armia Krajowa Museum, just to name a few. All over Old Town one can find campus parts of third oldest university in the world - Jagiellonian University - you are free to enter (and leave) all buildings at your choice (mind the students milling around every day of the week).
- Theater The main building housed the Teatr Wielki from 1833-1834, the Rozmaitości Theatre from 1836 to 1924 and then the National Theatre, the Reduta Theatre from 1919 to 1924, and from 1928 to 1939 - the Nowy Theatre, which staged productions of contemporary poetical drama, including those directed by Leon Schiller.
- Galicja Museum The Galicja Museum in Kazimierz opened in 2005 (or 2004?). It houses an exhibition of photographs with explanations in Polish and English. These are recent photos of locations around Poland associated with the Holocaust. Some are places where massacres occurred; most show old synagogues and Jewish cemeteries with comments about how respectfully (or not) these places are now preserved. The museum also has a bookstore and coffee shop, and arranges coach trips to Auschwitz.
- Gallery of 19th Century Art (one of several / in Krakow) is one of the best collections of 19th century paintings in Poland (website currently in Polish only). The collection's usual home upstairs in the Sukiennice is undergoing refurbishment until 2009. Until then, the collection is on display in the castle in the town of Niepolomice about 20km away. Minibuses go from the stop on ul. Starowislna opposite the main post office.
- Archeological Museum exhibits some unique Old-Slavonic exponents.
- Jewish Museum Judaica exhibits in the synagogues of the Jewish district.
- University Museum

St. Mary's Church, Kraków
Made by stefbra
St Mary's Church (here: seen from the market square) is a brick gothic church built in the 14th century, adjacent to the main market square in Kraków, Poland. It is particularly famous for its wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss. On every hour, a trumpet signal - called the hejnał (pronounced hey-now) - is played from the top of the taller of St. Mary's two towers. The plaintive tune breaks off in mid-stream, to commemorate the famous 13th century trumpeter, who was shot in the throat while sounding the alarm before the Mongol attack on the city. The noon-time hejnał is heard across Poland and abroad broadcast live by the Polish national Radio 1 Station.[wikipiedia.org] It is the only tower in the world at which a bugle has been played every hour for six hundred years for the entire world to hear. To see and to hear these wonders one must climb 239 steps, to a floor 54 m above ground level. The trumpeter takes just two and a half minutes to ascend the tower but visitors do not need to hurry. At the top they will be heartily greeted by bugle players - members of the fire service, perhaps the last magicians of Krakow...[krakow.pl]

Here be dragons...
Made by james_michael_hill
The fire spitting dragon statue thats beneath Wawel Castle, Krakow, Poland. According to legend, the evil dragon enjoyed eating young girls, and could only spare the surrounding countryside if the townfolk would leave a young girl in front of its cave once a month. The King tried to stop this, but all his knights were burnt to a crisp by its fiery breath.Eventually every girl in the city was sacrificed except one, the King's daughter Wanda. In desperation, the King promised his beautiful daughter's hand in marriage to anybody who could defeat the dragon (a little belatededly if you ask me!). Great warriors fought for the prize and failed. One day, a poor cobblers apprentice accepted the challenge. He stuffed a lamb with sulphur and set it outside the dragon's cave. The dragon ate it and soon became incredibly thirsty. No amount of drinking could quell his stomachache, and after swelling up from drinking half of the Vistula river, he exploded, the cobbler married the princess as promised and everyone lived happily ever after. Apart from the families of the young girls that is.
