Orloj
Made by George*50
Astronomical Clock, Prague ....................... The Orloj is a marvel of mechanical engineering, showing the current state of the universe at any point in time for six hundred years. The complexity of this clock can best be seen in this computer simulation program: www.praguealacarte.com/orloj/orlojLoader.html The tower housing the clock was built in 1381. There are three main parts of the Orloj. The clock itself was built in 1410 by Mikulas of Kadan. Although two similar clocks had already existed (one in Padua, and one in Strassbourg), Orloj is the oldest astronomical clock still using the original clockworks. The second part is the calendar dial below the clock, added in around 1490. The third part of Orloj are the two windows above the clock, where the twelve apostles come out in procession every hour. The clock face shows the earth in the center, with blue the sky above the horizon, and black sky below. The red/blue boundary represents the horizon (AVRORA being dawn, and CREPVSCVLVM being dusk). The sun pointer shows where the sun is relative to the horizon. In the daytime, it is in the blue portion, and at dusk it moves to the red, then to the black. In addition to the sun going around the dial, it also moves up and down the arm (closer or farther from the clock center), depending on the time of year. Yes, the clock also tells time. The golden hand shows the ancient Czech time (24 hour clock where 1 corresponds to sunset) on the outer ring, and the normal (Prague) time on the golden roman numerals (just inside the outer ring). The outer ring moves back and forth, so that 1 always corresponds to sunset. The Star shows the sidereal time, also on the roman numerals. (A sidereal day is the time it takes the earth to rotate once around its axis, ie 360 degrees. In comparison, a real day is the time for the earth to rotate once around and face the same direction with respect to the sun. This is around 361 degrees, since the earth has moved about 1 degree around the sun in that one day). Thus, the sidereal day is about 4 minutes shorter than the normal 24 hour day. The sun pointer also shows the time in unequal hours (the curved lines in the main circle). Unequal hours are 12 equal divisions between sunrise and sunset. The small inner ring on the clock shows the signs of the zodiac, indicating the location of the sun on the ecliptic (ie, it shows the constellation which is currently located behind the sun when looking from the earth). In this picture, the sun was in cancer (picture taken on July 10th). The moon pointer shows the rotation of the moon. The ball is half silver, half black, and it spins around its arm showing the current lunar phase. In this picture, the ball is black, indicating a new moon.

Church of Our Lady before Týn with the flanking House at the Stony Bell (on the left with the grey roof) at the Old Town Square seen from top of the Clock Tower, Prague, Czech Republic Some background information: The Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn was built in 1365 on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. Its magnificent multiple steeples are 80m high and dominate the square. Between the early 15th century and the year of 1620 it was the main Hussite church in Prague. The construction of the early Gothic “House at the Stone Bell” started in the second half of the 13th century. With most probability it was built for Queen Elisabeth I of Bohemia, mother of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. Although there are no written documents about it, some pieces of medieval decoration found in the house suggest this assumption as they probably represent the royal family. Prague itself is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. It’s also known as the City of a Hundred Spires as well as the Golden City. It’s home to about 1.3 million people, while its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of over 1.9 million. Situated on the Vltava River in central Bohemia, Prague has been the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state for more than 1.100 years. For many decades during the Gothic and Renaissance eras Prague was the permanent seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus was also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Since 1992 the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, making the city one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, which receives more than 4.1 million international visitors annually, as of 2009.

St Nicholas, Prague
Made by szeke
Back to church interiors, one of my favorite subjects. I shot this while sitting on a bench and quietly setting up my camera on my tripod. The interior of this church is very beautiful. It is not very large, but is beautifully decorated. I processed the image to show as much detail as possible as one can see when being there. The Shot: - ISO 100, 10mm, f13, - 3 shots at 1, 4, 16 secs. HDR using Photomatix: - HDR of the 0 and +2 shots. - Started with painterly effect, reduced temperature, increased micro contrast and then played with lumniosity and gamma to try to center the histogram. Photoshop: - Reduced brightness on -2 exposure and blended over the windows to get back a bit of the frames. - Rendered clouds on a separate layer and blended on the windows. - Nik Color Efex: Pro Contrast to compensate blue cast and add contrast. - Nik Color Efex: Color Contrast to darken the yellows. - Surface blur over marble to remove Photomatix grunginess. - Dodge all golden ornaments and areas with excessive shadow. - Burn front bench and people to make them less obtrusive.

Waiting for Godot
Made by The Challenge
This could be Godot but nobody knows, nobody ever saw him and these who say they did are always changing description. Godot could never be a child or pehaps he could. There is no way to avoid to wait for Godot but what do you do while you wait? You eat, sleep, converse, argue, sing, play games, exercise — anything to hold the terrible silence at bay Text above is my interpretation not a quote. Waiting for Godot is a book written by Samuel Barclay Beckett, must read! Waiting for Godot Photo made in Prague last fall, shame for the flash in the middle of the image and sorry I do not know the name of artist if you do please let me know. Thanks to Luisa we know who is the artist: Igor Melnikov

Saint Vitus Cathedral, Prague
Made by szeke
This is the awesome Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The decoration is not as rich as in some of the other churches, but the gothic interior is large and breathtaking. Nice . I was the first one in so had the church to myself for a few minutes. Didn't want to be too conspicuous with really long exposures, so I set up a quick f7.1 aperture. The Shot: - ISO 100, 10mm, f7.1 - 3 shots, 0.5, 1.6 and 6 seconds on gorilla tripod on the floor. HDR: - Photomatix details enhancer using painterly effect adjusted to get a bit more contrast. Photoshop: - Imagenomics noise reduction. - Nik Color Efex: Pro Contrast, Color Contrast and Tonal Contrast. - Reduce saturation. - Burn to recover additional window detail. - Long fight with perspective correction to try to make the walls vertical. This is more difficult to do than it sounds.

Astronomical Clock, Prague
Made by szeke
This is the famous astronomical clock in the Old-Town Hall in Prague. Wikipedia: It is also known as the Prague Orloj. The central portion was completed in 1410. The four figures are set in motion at the hour, with Death (represented by a skeleton) striking the time. On the hour there is a presentation of statues of the Apostles at the doorways above the clock, with all twelve presented at noon. In 1870 a calendar display was added below the clock. The Shot: - ISO 100, 70mm, f5.0, 1/200, handheld. Processing: - Imagenomic noise reduction. - Nik Color Efex: Pro Contrast. - Increase Vibrance on the clock. - Decrease saturation and lightness in the background. - Dodge and saturate the figures. - Nik Color Efex: Glamour Glow. - Surface blur on the clock and non-detailed parts of the walls. - Added more glow to the figures.

Piss - Hergetova Cihelna 2004, Prague, Czech Republic
Made by kh1234567890
Another David Cerny (babies on TV tower etc) sculpture. ' The idea is disarmingly simple. Two bronze sculptures pee into their oddly-shaped enclosure. While they are peeing, the two figures move realistically. An electric mechanism driven by a couple of microprocessors swivels the upper part of the body, while the penis goes up and down. The stream of water writes quotes from famous Prague residents. Visitor can interrupt them by sending SMS message from mobile phone to a number, displayed next to the sculptures (+420 724 370 770). The living statue then ‘writes’ the text of the message, before carrying on as before.'

The Twin Towers of Týn
Made by Umberto Luparelli
The church of our Lady in front of Týn (in Czech Kostel Matky Boží před Týnem, Týnský chrám or just Týn) is one of the most preeminent symbols of Prague Gothic style. As well as many other monuments in Prague, this church has a long and eventful history. In the place we see the church with two Gothic towers that dominate the Old town square and all the Old centre of Prague, Ungelt, have stood three churches, each destroyed by the wickedness of times. The interesting thing about the twin towers is that if you take a closer look, they are not at all identical. One of them is in fact a bit more solid and it is said that it represents the stronger side of the family, the man.

Man At Work
Made by an untrained eye
November 9th, 2007 - Prague, Czech Republic By the time I had checked into my hotel in Prague, there remained about twenty minutes of twilight before night closed in completely. It was cold and drizzling and I barely had time to make my way to one of the city's famed historical squares, but I did pass this man, working to the warm light of a lamp inside a shop that was in the process of being renovated. As I mentioned in the desciption to the previous photograph, I only had a small point and shoot camera with me, and the image is not quite as crisp as I would have wished, but I loved the contrast with the cold blue light outside and the shape of the shadow above the man's head.

You Are Nothing
Made by an untrained eye
November 12th, 2007 - Prague, Czech Republic Taken in the Kafka Museum during a video installation inspired by The Castle. I saw this the first time through but wasn't ready to capture it - so I watched the whole installation again (it lasts ten or twelve minutes, I guess), and in the meantime the girl in this photograph came in and stood beside me for a few moments, before crouching tiredly and leaning against the wall, which just made for the perfect composition. Incidentally, the next slogan was You are something - but it was white on black and too dark to give a decent picture. Which is probably appropriate - after all, this was the Kafka museum.

Prague Canal
Made by szeke
This canal is just after you cross the Charles Bridge going towards Old Town. It had nice reflections and a beautiful sky. It is a nice Prague scene. The Shot: - ISO 100, 21mm, f18 - 3 shots: 1/160, 1/40, 1/10 secs. Photomatix: - Details enhancer starting with starting with painterly effect, more microcontrast, reduced temperature, reduced luminosity and gamma and white point adjusted to make it brighter. Photoshop: - Imagenomic noise reduction. - Nik Color Efex: Pro Contrast. - Nik Color Efex: Tonal Contrast. - Desaturate sky. - Nik Color Efex: Darken/Lighten Center.

Arroyo del Diablo
Made by belthelem

Built between the 11th and 18th centuries, the Old Town, the Lesser Town and the New Town speak of the great architectural and cultural influence enjoyed by this city since the Middle Ages. The many magnificent monuments, such as Hradcani Castle, St Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge and numerous churches and palaces, built mostly in the 14th century under the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV. It is hard to miss this fellow when walking around the castle district in Prague. Pretty cool. Geotag is approximate. . ISO 100, 22mm, f9.0, (1/60, 1/15, 1/4). HDR of 3 shots tonemapped in Photomatix. Imagenomic Noiseware on the tiff, then Nik Color Efex: Tonal Contrast 10%, Pro Contrast 25% and adjust color cast, and then Midnight Filter to give it the dungeon effect even though the shot is in a bright moring on the street. Made by Diana's holiday snaps
This is the interior of the ground floor cafe/bar (I've just ordered some south Moravian white wine). As the city's cultural centre the Obecni Dum attracted contributions from many of the leading artisits of the day the most famous of which is Alfons Mucha who produced murals for the entrance hall. Outfit note - I'm glad you can see the necklace. It's Indian silver inlaid with pieces of shell. The asymetric top is from M&S.
