St. Nicholas' Church and Belfry, Ghent, Flanders/Belgium -- Whereas already about 1200 there was a Romanesque church on the side of Saint Nicholas' Church the present day Gothic building dates back to the early 13th century. In later centuries it was expanded and received the radiating chapels (shown in the photo below). -- Saint Nicholas' Church predominantly served the rich merchants of the town who build their own chapels within the church. -- Restauration work began in 1960 and is still in progress. In the background - to the right - the Belfry of Ghent. So, you've two of the three orientation towers of Ghent in this photo. Während bereits um 1200 eine romanische Kirche an diesem Platz stand, reicht die heutige gothische Kirche ins frühe 13. Jahrhundert zurück. Der Bau wurde in den folgenden Jahrhundert erweitert, insbesondere um zahlreiche Kapellen um den Chor herum erweitert. -- Die St.-Nikolaus-Kirche galt als die Kirche der reichen Kaufleute, die ihre eigenen Kapellen innerhalb der Kirche errichteten. -- Restaurationsarbeiten an der Kirche, mit denen 1960 begonnen wurde, sind noch nicht abgeschlossen. Im Hintergrund rechts der Belfried (Glockenturm) von Gent - als zweiter der drei Türme von Gent.

Wanted to show the contrast between the old St. Baafs Cathedral in the distance and the modern powerlines for the buses on the streets in front. Lighting was perfect with the clear skies, air and bright sun that weekend. This made the background turn a little pale which, in combination with the dark powerlines, defined the contrast all the better.
