Doctor Yellow 700 Series 923 (T4) Shinkansen (Bullet train)

Doctor Yellow 700 Series 923 (T4) Shinkansen (Bullet train)
Made by pablo808
View large Doctor Yellow (ドクターイエロー) is the nickname for the high-speed test trains that are used on the Japanese Shinkansen (Bullet Train) dedicated express passenger train routes. The trains have special equipment on board to monitor the condition of the track and overhead wire, including special instrumented bogies and observation blisters. The 'Doctor' part of the name is obvious from their test and diagnostic function, and the 'Yellow' part comes from the bright yellow color they are all painted. Some have a blue waistline stripe, some a green one. The original color scheme of yellow with a blue stripe (applied to the Class 921 track-recording cars) was created by reversing the colors (blue with yellow stripe) used on narrow-gauge track-recording cars. In build and appearance, they are very similar to production, passenger carrying Shinkansen trains, and line inspection is carried out at full line speed (i.e. up to 270 km/h on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Yellow

Kusunoki Masashige

Kusunoki Masashige
Made by jpellgen
Kusunoki Masashige (1294-1336) is an eduring symbol of loyalty and honor in Japan for his self-less act of obedience during the Kamakura period. Despite attempts to advise Emperor Go-Daigo to retreat to the mountains when their forces were betrayed by Ashikaga Takauji, Go-Daigo refused. Kusunoki lead his army into battle against impossible odds. He and hundreds of his men comitted seppuku. His final words are now famous, and they are quite similar to those of American patriot, Nathan Hale who is believed to have said I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country. Kusnoki's last words echoed the same sentiment: Shichisei hokoku (I wish I had seven lives to give for my country). The battle took place in Kobe, an area I am quite familar with. The Minatogawa shrine in Kobe houses the grave of Masashige. I have photos of that shrine in my photostream. *Featured in Explore

Here's another older shot that I was messing around with and having a go at a HDR using Topaz Denoise and Topaz Adjust to help improve an earlier posting of the same shot. The Topaz Denoise is brilliant and worth the dollars. This was taken with my old 400d Canon with a 17-85mm lens resting on a small wooden guard railing . It is the standard shot of the bridge, I know, but it is beautiful all the same. This is a three shot bracketed image at -2, 0, +2ev and blended in Photomatix and cleaned up in Topaz Denoise and Adjust. Final adjustments were made in Photoshop to sharpen using High Pass. All comments welcome of course, and as always I hope you like it. :)

_MG_6984 copy This is in the grounds of Edo Castle... did my kids want to have a look at the famous Nijubashi bridge... noooo, did the want to stare and wonder at the ornate hand crafted railings ... don't be daft... They were having fun jumping over stones... Well, I had to take just one or two snaps.. I was lying on the ground at this stage, to make there leaps look taller... This is a blend of a couple of shots, I couldn't get them to time there jumps perfectly.. :~} Can u pick my mistake? I only just noticed it... he he.. ,,,.. I have tagged it now... :~} ISO 200, 16-35mm@16mm, f/5.6, 1/1000sec, tummy angle, raw

The patriots

The patriots
Made by fleshmeatdoll
Japanese patriotic family. This was shot on the 23rd December - the birthday of the Japanese emperor. The family is on its way to the palace. The tenno will appear publicly only on this and one other occasion. All members of the family are wearing a face mask in order to not spread the cold or influenza one or more of them have caught. This is standard procedure in densely populated Tokyo, doctors will recommend it. Usually you don't see young Japanese with Japanese flags as they are very indifferent about the whole issue of being Japanese. And you wouldn't expect young Japanese to go see the emperor, either.

First HDR shot taken with my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35. Bought this because of its wider 25mm wide-angle lens, auto-bracket capability, and small size. Should be a good camera to keep with me at all times to get a wider range of shots off than my Canon IXY 910S (still a great camera, but no auto-bracketing) and Pentax K10 (awesome camera but too big to lug around to-from work). 3xp HDR shot taken freehand of the Imperial Palace's moat with the Hibiya business district on the other side. Tokyo, Japan.

A typical scene in Shibuya

A typical scene in Shibuya
Made by damiancorrigan
Dug this out from my 2007 trip to Japan. This was taken 'on the fly' while out walking in Shibuya. I think this photo says it all about Shibuya and, indeed, modern Japan. The fake peroxide blonde hair, the well-preened men, the bad shorts, the guy fanning himself, the girl straightening her friend's hair in the middle of the street using battery-powered hair straighteners, the girl doing that weird crouching thing the Japanese youth do. Please comment on my photo - even one word will be appreciated!

It's my first upload of 2009 and I'm still digging through the 2008 archives... though I'm hoping we can return to Japan in April. Thanks to all of my Flickr contacts and friends for their support in 2008... all the best to you for 2009! This shot of roof tiles at Tokyo's Imperial Palace is an obvious continuation of a theme following yesterday's addition of to my Flickr stream. March 16, 2008.

View On Black The Ambient Candle Park at the Wadakura Fountain Park in Tokyo is part of an illumination festival based on the concept of Earth, Environment, and Peace in Tokyo. It features about 700 painted lanterns arranged around water fountains to create a beautiful harmony of water, light, and sound. There's also a wedding ceremony going on in the background.

Improved and replaced by this image: Rendered into a painting using Dynamic Auto Painter (combination of watercolor and drawing). I added in some antique calligraphy and chop stamps from a Japanese scroll I have. I photographed the scroll, selected the text and then copied it in. The scroll is quite ancient, so the text is quite hard to decipher. If anyone can read it, I would definitely appreciate a translation.

The Nijubashi bridge in front of Tokyo's reclusive Imperial Palace where Japan's Emperor lives. The palace is only open to the public on two days of the year: January 2nd and December 23rd - the Emperor's Birthday. The building you can see behind the bridge is all that can be seen of the palace on the other days. | .

Big bonsai forest

Big bonsai forest
Made by Jean-François Chénier
These perfectly manicured trees outside the imperial palace in Tokyo make me think of bonsai. But bigger. Hard to believe that this peaceful little scene is in the heart of a city with 12.5 million people, something that would be more obvious if I had framed it less tightly. Skyscrapers and busy roads abound.

Location: 35.67965,139.755467 One of the most famous view of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo... you can't see much more than that anyway. Shot at the very end of the blue hour, with hardly any light at all. More than 1mn exposure, manual focus as the camera could not detect anything.

Wadakura Fountain Park. This spot in Tokyo provided one of those Tokyo Moments. We thought there was no one else at the fountain. We gradually became aware that every shadowy spot had a couple in it. Quite a fright at first. I think this is as close as you can get to privacy in Tokyo.

View from the Roppongi Hills' Mori Tower, from the 52nd floor observation deck. This time I used a different setting for the white balance. None of the settings are true to nature, but all are quite moody in their own individual way...
