Netherlands, Rotterdam. Terbregseweg, near the TNT Post mail sorting center. The previous evening I had done some night panorama shots using my monopod on this location and one nearby. Unknowingly, I had lost the rubber tip after sticking it in the ground.So I was looking for it in the daytime. I was trying to find it back, when I noticed these protective parents and their newborns. While I was trying to get the best angle (without getting too close), they made sure that one of them was always between me and the kids. Very cute and very understandable, of course. Also when a male duck was approaching, the pond (in the upper left you see a corner ), it was chased away by one of the parents. These beautiful birds are (almost) the size of geese, but have also duck-like features. Is there a bird specialist on Flickr who can help me determine what kind of species this is, exactly? I shall then update my tags accordningly. This picture was taken in the afternoon of Monday April 9 2007, the day after Easter Sunday. Also see the Yahoo map for the location. Update: (thanks to MissJennyPenny's contribution below) - it is a goose, an Egyptian Goose to be precise (in Dutch: Nijlgans). The agressive / protective behavior that I experienced, is quite typical for this species, according to Wikipedia.
