Собор Василия Блаженного. Saint Basil Cathedral. 1555
Made by Peer.Gynt
Moscow. Red Square. July 2009 The Cathedral of Intercession of Theotokos on the Moat (Russian: Собор Покрова пресвятой Богородицы, что на Рву), popularly known as the Cathedral of Basil the Blessed, is a Russian Orthodox cathedral erected on the Red Square in Moscow in 1555–1561. Built on the order of Ivan IV of Russia to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan, it marks the geometric center of the city and the hub of its growth since the 14th century. It was the tallest building of Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. The original building, known as Trinity Church and later Trinity Cathedral, contained eight side churches arranged around the ninth, central church of Intercession; the tenth church was erected in 1588 over the grave of venerated local Fool Vasily (Basil). In the 16th and the 17th centuries the cathedral, perceived as the earthly symbol of the Heavenly City, was popularly known as the Jerusalem and served as an allegory of the Jerusalem Temple in the annual Palm Sunday parade attended by the Patriarch of Moscow and the tsar. The building's design, shaped as a flame of a bonfire rising into the sky,has no analogues in Russian architecture: It is like no other Russian building. Nothing similar can be found in the entire millennium of Byzantine tradition from the fifth to fifteenth century... a strangeness that astonishes by its unexpectedness, complexity and dazzling interleaving of the manifold details of its design. The cathedral foreshadowed the climax of Russian national architecture in the 17th century but has never been reproduced directly. The cathedral has operated as a division of the State Historical Museum since 1928.It was completely secularized in 1929 and, as of 2009, remains a federal property of the Russian Federation. The cathedral has been part of the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Basil_Cathedral

Mayakovskaya Metro station, Moscow, Russia
Made by Cat Girl 007
The Moscow metro is a marvel of urban design. Every day, as many as 9 million people use the metro system -- that's more than in New York and London combined. As well as being one of the most efficient and cheapest underground transit systems in the world, the Moscow Metro is also undoubtedly one of the most beautiful. The brainchild of the tsars but finally put into action by Stalin, whose idea to make the city’s metro stations “palaces for the people” has translated into some truly spectacular, subterranean architectural gems. It’s possible to spend an entire day or more travelling the metro and exploring the vast array of ornate stations; each constructed and decorated in its own unique way. There are 182 Moscow stations. This shot is in the Mayakovskaya, considered by many to be the jewel in the Moscow Metro crown. It was the grand-prize winner at the 1939 World's Fair in New York for its art deco central hall that features gracefull columns faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite. This is also one of the deepest stations which allowed it to serve as an air-raid shelter during WWII. On the anniversary of the October Revolution, on 7 November 1941 Stalin personally addressed a mass assembly of party leaders and ordinary Muscovites in the central hall of the station.

Merchant District, Moscow, 1969
Made by Rob Ketcherside
On the left: Now the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation; in 1969 it was the Union Chamber of Commerce; previously it was the Moscow Stock Exchange. In the distance you can see the Rossiya Hotel behind Znamenskyi Monastery. Just to the right of the street, the curved building is the Old Merchant Court, which is now painted blue with glass skylights and is used as an exhibition hall. On the far right is the five-story former mission of the Trinity - St. Sergius Monestary. Taken by my grandfather David C. Cook on a visit to Moscow for a meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission. Development stamp is June, 1969. Scanned from an unlabeled Kodachrome slide in a box labeled Russia.

rossiya hotel - moscow
Made by chirgy
Trying to sort out my photographic workflow (are there *ooh get him with his workflow* tags you can use to undercut that last statement slightly? ah - thankyou!) I came across this, taken on an afternoon when the hotel was still standing, the light was marvellous and many things were ok with the world (not that they aren't now, of course). The little Fuji was just about up to the task so - other than the square crop - I've done nothing to it...

Moscow, Ulitsa Varvarka, monastery of the Sign (17th century). Ulitsa Varvarka (St. Barbara Street) is one of the more pittoresque corners of Moscow with its succession of small churches and the old English Court, where since the 16th century a delegation of English merchants was allowed to reside. The building looks splendid, for the time being freed from its obtrusive Soviet-era neighbour, the now disappeared Rossiya Hotel.

On the far left is St. Basil's Cathedral. This was taken somewhere on the Rossiya Hotel, perhaps a rooftop observation point? I haven't identified the rest of the buildings in the picture - feel free to chime in. Taken by my grandfather David C. Cook on a visit to Moscow for a meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission. Development stamp is June, 1969, so perhaps this is May.

Comrade Fletcher - 3/365

I was taking some quite serious photos for Martin and Ian, his business partner, when he grabbed my Russian hat and stood looking like it was a Soviet era state funeral. I couldn't resist Photoshopping the poster of Lenin onto the bare wall behind ;-) (Strobists: on camera flash with single SB800 reflected off ceiling at LHS)

Red Square in January

This is a photo taken while on a business trip to Moscow, Russia in January 2005. Red Square was almost empty and one of the coldest places I have ever been in my life. This photo was taken using my old film camera. www.andrewfgriffith.com

Russian friendly warmth
Made by Éole
Event building inside the Kremlin. Build in the 70's for national party's parties. Not particularly nice picture, but I like the strong skya and the distorted lines. Russian people seem to be cold. But this reputation is wrong. As soon as ice is broken they become very friendly a like to help you.

Ready for a Day on the Black Market
Made by Ray Cunningham
To conduct black market operations in the USSR one had to dress the part with new jeans and bags full of goods. Within minutes Rubles flowed and clothing and forbidden items from the west were traded. The USSR had one of the best free market economies the world had ever seen.
