Twilight PSC

This is a sunset photo from Kiruna, Sweden in January 2004. The white and irridescent clouds are called Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSC) and are acutally ice crystals in the stratosphere. They often have a wave-like structure to them. I was in Sweden to study them and their effect on ozone. PSCs are required in order for chlorine to become activated and destroy ozone and form an ozone hole. These clouds were at an altitude of 70,000 feet! Best viewed at the larger sizes.

The irridescent clouds well above the plane are Polar Stratospheric Clouds. They were around 20km altitude and are needed to form an ozone hole.
