Koloman Kolo Moser is one of the big Austrian art heroes of the Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil as it's known). As some of us later discovered at an exhibition of his work, he could pretty much do anything, designing furniture, lamps, postage stamps, the flyers for Secession exhibitions, etc etc etc. Included in that exhibition were the original full-size colored pencil drawings for these fabulous windows, but I couldn't get a picture of them, sadly. The real windows are just great. It's novel enough to encounter a Nouveau take on church glass, but to have them be from an acknowledged master is even cooler. From left to right: St. Elisabeth, Rebecca, St. Bernhard, St. Martin, and St. John von Gott.

This is a great church. As I mentioned, the heat of the day was taking its toll on me, and while we waited to be admitted to the interior, I pretty much slumped in the shade of the building and tried to recuperate with some small success....but the moment we were inside, all was forgotten. This space is beautiful, and made startlingly unique by a) Wagner's particular architectural sensibility and b) the requirements of designing a church for a lunatic asylum. Also, the ornamental work is all first-rate, more on that in a moment.
