Gosh, weird seeing this with not one IPC stormtrooper on guard and the central control desk unstaffed... I know this building is widely disliked, but I have very fond memories of working here for Big K magazine on the 20th floor back in the 1980s (even though we called it the Tower of Doom - it was also known as Tharg's Spaceship, thanks to the 2000 AD guys.). Richard (the deputy editor of Big K) and I returned for a photoshoot, quite unaware that the building had been entirely vacated. It will survive to be recladded and even enlarged: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King's_Reach_Tower I am a little sad about this - I quite like some (not all) of Siefert's brutalist concrete work and I have an awful feeling that this is going to be spruced up in bright jolly colours, since the area is now a major tourist spot (which it certainly wasn't in my time working down there).

Road empahsis

The empasis on roads here is quite interesting - the Queens walk is a footpath and yet the same as the minor roads. Some liberties are taken with the accuracy of the riverside walk around the Borough Market area - it doesn't run straight along the riverside. It's also strange to see they've used TfL roundels for the tube (and buses on the 5 minute maps) but not the DLR roundel - it's just letters in a box.

The maps are orientated in the direction that you are looking. Unfortunately this one (the only one of the four) doesn't have a You are here mark. It's also curious that, for a walking-specific map, the pedestrian areas aren't in black. It's also inconsistent with the 15 minute maps regarding the riverside walk.

I talked about this at State of the Map - landmark buildings shown in 3d on an otherwise flat map. Good to see someone else with the same idea. www.gravitystorm.co.uk/shine/advanced-osm-cartography/

It's the same font as the tube lines, but if you look carefully you can see the raised lettering from another version of the stick-on stuff underneath. Neither me nor Matt can see what the difference is between them, other than text positioning.

The 5 and 15 minute walks are ignorant of the territory - perfectly illustrated here. If you can't make it to the other side of the bridge in 5 minutes, the only way to get to that bit of the embankment would be to walk on water.

As well as the tfl phone numbers, there's a signpost location number. An OSM tag for that then? The little bit of health advice down the bottom is going a bit far

If you're looking at this side, you're facing south. Takes a bit of getting used to - this map looks like it's in Pimlico to me, due to the bend in the river

That's the CloudMade office right there in the background, and this is the first one of these map boards I've seen! The board has two maps on each side.

It's nice to see the prime areas of the board entirely given over to maps.
