Tanjong Pagar railway station

Tanjong Pagar railway station
Made by Philippe C.
Before the Johor-Singapore Causeway was built, the railway in Singapore was exclusively limited to the island. The construction of the Johor-Singapore Causeway across the Straits of Johor began in 1919, and it was opened to goods trains on September 17, 1923 and to passenger trains on October 1, 1923. Previously, passengers and goods train were transferred at Woodlands to a ferry to Johor Bahru and the connecting train on the peninsula. Tanjong Pagar railway station was completed in 1932. In 1990, Malaysia and Singapore signed an agreement concerning Tanjong Pagar railway station. Malaysia agreed to relocate the station to Bukit Timah, thus freeing up land for development. In return, Singapore agreed that railway land at Tanjong Pagar would be handed over to a private limited company for joint development, with equity split 60% to Malaysia and 40% to Singapore. However, the parties interpreted the agreement in much different ways. Singapore insisted that the agreement took immediate effect but Malaysia argued that the agreement would come into effect only after it decides to move the station. As the two countries are still trying to sort out their differences, the current immigration clearance procedure is: * Towards Singapore, Malaysian immigration officers carry out immigration clearance on board the train at Johor Bahru railway station. After clearing immigration, the train crosses the causeway and stops at WTCP, where all passengers must proceed to Singapore Customs and Immigration. Therefore, travellers entering Singapore by rail are following the correct order of immigration clearance, that is, exit granted by Malaysian Immigration in Johor and entry granted by Singapore Immigration in Woodlands. After clearing immigration at Woodlands, passengers may disembark or continue their journey to Tanjong Pagar by train. * Towards Malaysia, passengers must board the train at Tanjong Pagar and clear Malaysian Customs and Immigration before boarding. The train travels about 30 minutes to WTCP and stops for another 30 minutes to allow sufficient time for passengers to clear Singapore Immigration. In this case, passengers are granted entry into Malaysia before clearing Singapore Immigration, which is contrary to international practice. To circumvent this problem, Malaysian immigration officers do not stamp on passengers' passports. In early 2007, news of a Singaporean woman being jailed for failing to have her passport stamped when entering Malaysia threw the spotlight on the unusual clearance procedures when traveling by train. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminded Singaporeans that their passports will not be stamped when departing for Malaysia by train, but will instead obtain a stamp on the disembarkation card, which must be retained until departure from Malaysia. The entry records are also entered into a computer system. Even then, this arrangement continued to present problems for some commuters. Best seen in . Thanks.

Singapore Merlion Park

Singapore Merlion Park
Made by Keith Yeung
Leica M8 Leitz Noctilux f1.0 1/20sec ISO160 Handhold The merlion (Simplified Chinese: 鱼尾狮; Pinyin: Yúwěishī) is a statue with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Its name comes from a portmanteau of mermaid and lion. The merlion was designed by Fraser Brunner for the Singapore Tourism Board in 1964 and was used as its logo up to 1997. The then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, officiated the installation ceremony of the Merlion on 15 September 1972.The Merlion continues to be its trademark symbol. It also appears frequently in STB-approved souvenirs. The original Merlion statue stands at the opening of the Singapore River while a taller replica can be found on Sentosa Island. The merlion measures 8.6 metres high and weighs 70 tonnes. The Merlion statue was built from cement fondue by the late Singapore craftsman, Mr Lim Nang Seng. According to the Singapore Tourism Board's publicity campaign, the lion head and fish body of the creature recalls the story of the legendary Sang Nila Utama, who saw a lion while hunting on an island, en route to Malacca. The island eventually became the sea port of Temasek, a precursor to Singapore. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

two hundred and five I was going to call this catnap... but it would've been too obvious. As if this alternate isn't obvious but aaahhhh... *waves hands* This darling was trying to catch a few winks on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Tanjong Pagar Rail Station. She patronised me by staying a little while to endure my camera in her face and my fingers scratching all around her chin and behind her ears before she decided to find a quieter corner. Uponwhich we discovered that she was expecting. =D The prospect of kittens makes me excited!!! * * * Also... I just created a formspring... I guess I thought it might be fun to know what you want to know about me... or if you guys have questions about photography and... you know... stuff... The Famous Singapore Merlion

The Famous Singapore Merlion

Singapore and Switzerland are my two favorite countries. Switzerland because of the mountains. Singapore because of the large variety of cultures and being 60 miles from the equator it is green all year round. Singapore is made up of the indigenous Malay population with a third generation Chinese majority, as well as Indian and Arab immigrants with some intermarriages. There also exist Eurasian and Peranakan (known also as 'Straits Chinese') communities. Singapore has achieved a significant degree of cultural diffusion with its unique combination of these ethnic groups, and this has given Singapore a rich mixture of diversity for its young age. One of the prime examples is the Singaporean cuisine, a cultural attraction for all tourists. Photo: 2003 12 04 Singapore 0560

bigger & better On Black ^_^! Sun rise on the world's busiest port and one of the biggest financial district in Asia. wake up at 4am and suddenly want to do smt crazy :D. I just packed my dude & walked to Orchard Road. Then sadly realized that they've turned off all the x'mas lights (may be since midnight) ~_~! Jumped on a random bus and finally got there, Mt.Faber, the highest point of Singapore. rush like crazy to find a spot to catch the first light of the day (i've never been there before). Luckily i got this shot! so tired right now but i think it's worth! taken with a D60 kit lens, handheld, converted from a single NEF file. Wish all of you a happy sunday!

bigger and (maybe) better On Black Another trying at the same spot with my first HDR attemp. Still couldn't get the full dynamic range and stop the leaves movement (as Mr.Artie has shown this tech in some of his works) ... Really wish u to drop some critical comments, i will be largely appreciated! took 3 shots by D80 + 18-55 VR (kit lens) and tone mapped by Photomatix, color enhancing by Lightroom. ........................ Beside all of those techincal terms, the most important thing to me is this shot will appeal to you and ... Enjoy your beautiful sunday!!! I would love to dedicate this shot to 2 of my dear friends, Alan & Eric! hope ur guys like it ^_^!

This guy looks most sophisticated in the group. He has a pair of awesome clear red eyes!!! I believe getting a potrait of these naughtiest animals is itself a challenge. Please click here for entire set Trivia : The Hamadryas Baboon is a baboon from the Old World monkey family. It is the northernmost of all the baboons; its range extends from the Red Sea in Egypt to Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. It also lives on the Arabian peninsula (Saudi Arabia and Yemen). The Hamadryas Baboon was a sacred animal to the ancient Egyptians as the attendant of Thoth, and so, is also called the Sacred Baboon. Source: Wikipedia
